1. Processed Foods: America’s Biggest Addiction
A GREATER PROBLEM THAN THE ECONOMY!!
Processed foods have been altered from their natural state for safety reasons (e.g.
pasteurization) and for convenience (e.g. fast foods and boxed meals). The
methods used for processing foods include canning, freezing, refrigeration,
dehydration, and aseptic processing.
Processed foods lead to many chronic diseases and health conditions that are
currently plaguing the nation.
Obesity – People who eat more fast foods and processed foods are more prone
to obesity than those who don’t. Recent studies show that obesity in children can
be reduced by 18% just by cutting down on processed foods.
Diabetes – Processed foods contain huge amounts of sugar, which leads to
diabetes. Even breakfast cereals have lots of sugar.
Heart Disease – Almost all the processed foods have fatty acids, which raise the
levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and lower the levels of HDL (good) cholesterol.
Most of the processed foods are also high in salt. According to health studies, the
number of heart attacks and strokes can be reduced just by cutting the salt in
processed foods in half.
Cancer – People who eat mostly processed food are 67% more likely to develop
cancer (especially pancreatic cancer) when compared to people who don’t eat
processed food. Women have a 57% chance of developing breast cancer if they
eat more fast foods.
2. Flatulence and Abdominal Bloating – Excessive salt in processed foods
causes bloating, can lead to dehydration, and cause water retention/swelling.
Flatulence is the process of the body expelling the unwanted gases. Eating
processed foods leads to excessive flatulence.
Heartburn and Acid Reflux – Foods cooked in trans-fats such as French fries,
chips, and processed foods cause acid reflux. Switch from processed foods to
natural and whole foods to avoid acid reflux. Oily and overly spicy processed
foods also cause heartburn.
Gastritis and Peptic Ulcers – Eating processed foods every day causes gastritis
and peptic ulcers. I never saw a person with H. pylori who followed a raw food
diet correctly. (Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium in the stomach that causes
gastritis and ulcers, and is related to stomach cancers.)
Fast foods or processed foods have an impact on the brain similar to highly
addictive drugs such as opium, heroin, and morphine. The combination of sugar,
salt, and fat have the same effect as heroin and other drugs on the brain. As a
result, processed foods are highly addictive and are the number one addiction in
the United States. Processed foods cause damage to the human body similar to
these drugs. Sadly, there are no laws to protect the consumer from the harmful
side effects of ingesting processed foods.
