The Night of San Juan Lesson 6
This week’s goal I read, recognize, write,and discussthe themeof a story.
This week’s Goal The THEME of a story is the main message or central idea being told by the story.
This week’s Goal The THEME is a statement of how the author wants us to feel about the story’s main idea.
This week’s Goal Some examples of THEME: “Love conquers all” “Good always beats evil” 	“Hard work pays off” “Be grateful for what you have”
This week’s Goal Some examples of THEME: “The early bird gets the worm” “Money cannot solve one’s problems” 	“Crime does not pay” “Death comes to all”
Think about the THEME as we read: 	Carolina had never left San Juan, Puerto Rico, and now her family was packing up to move to the United States.
Think about the THEME as we read: Her parents assured her that before long, she would feel right at home in Denver, Colorado.
Think about the THEME as we read: Carolina didn’t see how; Denver would be nothing like San Juan. There was no ocean nearby, and it snowed there; it never snows in San Juan.
Think about the THEME as we read: Instead of starting to pack her things, Carolina went out for a walk by herself. Discuss in your table group: What is the theme of this passage?

Raspy A noise that sounds rough and harsh, like sandpaper scraping wood.
Swarmed For a group of something to move quickly and gather in  large numbers
Revelers People who are having fun at a lively party or celebration
Irresistible Something that is difficult to turn away from
