4. 6. BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED WORK:
6.1 NEED FOR STUDY
Mukha Swasthya (oral hygiene) has gained importance now a day, because
Mukha is such a Anga, which is exposed to many risk factors in day-to-day life.
An Unhealthy diet, habits like tobacco chewing, smoking, alcohol use, social
determinants have increased incidences of diseases pertaining to oral cavity1
.These are
also risk factors for the four leading chronic diseases – cardiovascular diseases, cancer,
chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes – and oral diseases are often linked to chronic
disease. Poor oral hygiene is also a risk factor for oral disease1
.
Mouth is invaded by large number of micro organisms, which are normally
controlled by maintenance of reasonable oral hygiene. If this is neglected, bacterial
population may proliferate and cause many oral diseases2
.
In Ayurvedic classics many health promotive procedures are explained in the
form of Dinacharya like Dantadhavana, Kavala, Gandusha3
.Which helps in preventing
many oral problems such as bad breath, poor taste perception, dryness of mouth4
.
Many Dravyas have been mentioned in the classics for Gandusha as Dinacharya.
Because the physical, thermal and chemical causes of injury to oral cavity (due to
exposure to various risk factors) can be better counteracted by practicing Gandusha
daily. Among these Triphala kwath and Madhu has been mentioned both in Dinacharya
and Mukha roga adhikara. It has an advantage from health promotive, disease
preventive, curative and restorative aspects.
The present study will be taken to evaluate the role of Gandusha with Triphala
kwatha and Madhu in the prevention of Mukhagata roga and promoting oral hygiene,
which affects a large segment of population.
4
5. 6.2) REVIEW OF LITERATURE
• Ayurvedic classics mentioned not practicing Dinacharya procedures like
Dantadhavana, Gandusha, Tambula sevana will alter the normal oral cavity and
lead poor mukha swasthya 5
.
• An Unhealthy diet, habits like tobacco chewing, smoking, alcohol use, social
determinants, poor oral hygiene etc have increased incidences of diseases
pertaining to oral cavity6
.
• Using Panchavalkala kwath or Triphala kwath for gandusha with Madhu will
cure Mukhagata roga and maintains oral hygiene7
.
