Research and planning, part 1 - Dominic Rose

Notas do Editor

  1. *PRESS BUTTON*Hello, I am Dominic Rose, candidate number 6023 and this is my A2 G324: Advanced Portfolio in MediaAnd I am going to be presenting my coursework of brief 2, A promotion package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer, together with a poster for the film. And a film magazine front cover, featuring the film; What am going to do is present my coursework in the 3 sections*PRESS BUTTON*Research and PlanningConstructionAnd Evaluation. But what I have also done is split construction and research and planning down. Construction has been split into the main task, being the teaser trailer and the two subsidiary tasks. I have split research and planning down into 3 different parts as well these beingSimilar products and potential target audienceShot lists, layouts, drafting, scripting and storyboardingAndOrganisation of actors, locations, costumes and props. The bibliography for my research will be displayed at the end of each Section*PRESS BUTTON*Here now is part 1 of research and planning, similar products and potential target audience*PRESS BUTTON*Here is my production schedule to ensure that I was keeping on track with my work and keeping everything within my timeframe I was allotted. This section of research and planning we will be looking at my first 4 weeks. Plus a deconstruction of a professional teaser trailer in week 5. I will also be presenting weeks 7 and 8 as week 7 is where as a result of a focus group session I had to change my target audience, therefore meaning I should change my production schedule to allow time for this to fit in.*PRESS BUTTON*
  2. *PRESS BUTTON*Week 1 commencing 13th September 2010*PRESS BUTTON*To start off my portfolio I had to research and and deconstruction my brief so that I was aware of what I actually had to produce.I had no problems with this task and understood my outcomes, which were that I understood the brief and deconstructed each text.*PRESS BUTTON*I started by researching my main task, the teaser trailer via the internet. This told my that teaser trailers were short not as long as theatrical trailers that are often 3-4 minutes. They are usually released several months before the film is to draw in an audience and get them hooked to the trailer right before it comes out so they are more excited for the film. They are often told through titles, which are certain symbolic words or a line that means something great the the narrative. Music is used to set the genre of the film and to help tell the narrative. The plot is told but vaguely so an audience has a sense of what is happening but doesn’t spoilt it too much so that they will not want to watch the film. The institution that makes the film is always shown such as new line cinema or summit entertainment. What I found out from my research from YouTube by looking at several teaser trailers produced in previous years that most high scoring trailers were horror films or action. On YouTube I found 2 which were at a B and A grade, so I decided to deconstruct those pieces*PRESS BUTTON*These were Final Cut and The Remainders. They were off the genres of horror and psychological thriller, along similar lines of the other teaser trailers I found.*PRESS BUTTON*I deconstructed them based on Mise-en-scene, use of camera, editing, lighting & colour and sound.Final Cut seemed the weaker of the two texts yet still a very good production. As an audience we get a good sense of the narrative and genre through the trailer. Representation is strong but could be fairer. Creativity is at a normal level as this not being unique simply re producing the generic horror film with a different twist of having media students. This in turn gives the film a specific target audience. The use of camera is strong combined with the narrative. Several close ups link with high paced music. Editing is used well to build up tension and then upon reaching climax cut, cut, cut makes the editing very effective. The lighting gives a great sense of genre making it clear that it is horror. The lighting helps pin point what is important for the narrative. The music conveys genre well, keeps audience’s attention, the very few words that are said tell give us an inside into the narrative. The Remainders being the text that achieved an A grade is a very unique and clear productionThe mise en scene in this teaser trailer works exceptionally well. Giving away enough to get a sense of what a remainder could be but not so much that we keep guessing about what a ‘remainder’ is. The shots of specific objects really give us a sense of the film without having to say any narrative at all. Creativity is exceedingly high as this is something very unique that a mass audience would go to a cinema and watch. The use of different camera angles in this piece gives the teaser trailer more of the mystery and wants to an audience watch the actual film more because it’s as if there are so many different perspectives and views on what could happen. The editing gives the teaser a trailer really good pace that the audience keep up with yet isn’t too slow. The colouring and lighting in this film are very dim, only showing primary colours as if even in the colouring the teaser trailer only gives certain points. The lighting in this teaser trailer is mostly natural lightning apart from spotlighting at the end this makes the end seems different completely from the rest of the film, as if giving many different angles on this film. The music complements the teaser trailer perfectly giving a sense of genre and keeping up with the fast editing. Having no lyrics for the music focuses us much more on the film and doesn’t distract the audience. After deconstructing and research this part of the brief I have a far better understanding of the level of which my production should be at which is evidently very professional. *PRESS BUTTON*
  3. *PRESS BUTTON*To start my research into my Film magazine front cover, I bought several magazines from Empire, Total Film and Sight and Sound. I compared the three top selling film magazines and came to several conclusions about what the forms and conventions of film magazine front covers are.A photo of the protagonist is always vital to the front cover, this protagonist usually from a long awaited release or a blockbuster series of films. There is more often than not a prop significant to the narrative photographed as well, giving a scene of genre to the cover. The title of the front cover film is shown prominently as this is what will help sell the magazine. The masthead is shown big bold and near the top of the cover so that an audience is aware of the magazine they are buying. Other film adverts are included too. The photo of the protagonist and the editing around them is what really sells the magazine giving a sense of genre and narrative.*PRESS BUTTON*I decided to deconstruct a recent empire magazine front cover as from looking through past A2 blogs on the teaser trailer promotion package, most students produced a magazine front cover from empire. The use of having the photograph in front of the EMIPIRE logo shows great technical skill as we can tell still what the magazine is called yet the photograph is made far more apparent. The use of primary colours in the piece shows that this magazine is fundamental to film magazine viewing. The same font is consistent throughout and is simple bold and big, to draw and audiences attention in. There is little use of other text in this cover as the masthead and titles are so big. The photograph takes great presence within the cover and is what sells the magazine*PRESS BUTTON*I have chosen to deconstruct an A level film front cover so that I can see what other students are producing. This front cover was the best cover I could find out of the blogs I looked at, it is not of an amazing standard yet is still good enough for me to get a general idea of what is happening. The colour scheme throughout the text really gives a sense of horror the horror genre. The use of connotation throughout this piece is poor. I states that this is the ‘hot issue’ yet no where does it make it obvious that it is in a hot issue or not even subtle hints towards it. The cover shows little sense of narrative, and the titles are hard to follow. The only sense of narrative is through the colour scheme, which gives us the texts genre. From this I can take what I need to do to make my A2 film magazine front cover better than ones already produced.*PRESS BUTTON*
  4. *PRESS BUTTON*For my film poster research I went back onto the internet to see what the forms and conventions of film posters are. The narrative is shown through the poster it is appealing and sometimes artistic having lots of connotation and denotation throughout the help the narrative be shown. The title of the film is clear and shows the genre of the film. The institution making the film are shown. The company name and titles of what has been happening is shown at the bottom often in a tall thin font such as Arial narrow. A tagline of the film is shown and also gives a sense of the narrative for the film. The release date is obvious on the poster so that a potential target audience can know when to see the film.*PRESS BUTTON*I have chosen to deconstruct the Eat Pray Love poster as I’d is a completely different genre to the horror and action of most A2 work. The use of Julia Robert’s name is in the top of the poster making it the first thing you read. Julia Roberts has been predominantly used to promote this film, by her being before the Film Title itself. The connotation through the colours in the title and the and the ice cream is perfect. The use of the traffic light colours for Eat Pray Love show that Eat is good, Pray you should be wary of and Love you should stay away from. This gives an audience an insight into the narrative. The use of the ice cream shows that the film is going to be calorie filled much like the ice cream Julia is eating. The website for the film is shown at the bottom of the poster giving potential audiences the chance to learn more about the film.*PRESS BUTTON*The Cure was the best film A Level poster I saw during my research for film posters from previous years. It has the age rating in the corner of the poster clearly defining how scared the film is and for what audience. The age rating symbol itself could have been edited so that there wasn’t white around it so that the symbol blended in with the poster, not look as if id just been placed on top. There is a star rating for the film in the corner, this may have been to ambitious placing 5 stars as the quality of the poster doesn’t match that. The costume used gives a clear representation of the target audience this film poster is aimed at and a sense of the characters in the film. From this I can clearly see what I need to do and what I don’t need to do to make a successful film poster.*PRESS BUTTON*
  5. *PRESS BUTTON*My second task was to chose a genre and research into that genre the forms and conventions.*PRESS BUTTON*I started by mind mapping what genre’s where out in the public domain and most popular.I had;AnimatedComedyActionFamilyThrillerHorrorFantasyRomanceDramaRomantic Comedy‘Chick Flick’*PRESS BUTTON*I came to a conclusion that my film was going to be within the genre’s of Romance, Drama, Romantic Comedy and Chick Flick because;Love can happen anywhere in any location at any time with anyone. This is why romance was such a good choice, I can use actors and locations that were easily accessible to me. Also Romance films are a mass selling genre. Creating a drama is something that takes skill but when done well can be that grips an audience and creates a sense of narcissism with them.A romantic comedy is a genre which is mass selling that is a feel good film which is a great way of escapismA chick flick is the same as a romantic comedy yet is targeted at a teen and pre-teen audience, giving me much more accessibility to actors and potential target audience members.*PRESS BUTTON*The reasons why I did not choose the other genre’s were.Animated: Producing a decent animated teaser trailer requires you to have great skill in working with animation, this is something I have very little knowledge of therefore would have to learn a whole new way of working. I don’t think I have enough time to be able to learn a new skill as well as then making it decent enough to get a good grade for producing a teaser trailerComedy: Comedy is something I was debating about whether to keep or not. I decided that comedy is something that you need to be able to cleverly put together to get laughs from a mass audience. I don’t think I would be able to put together a comedy trailer that would appeal to a mass audience.Action: This is a genre that in modern day relies a great deal on special effects and expensive locations. I simply don’t have to money or time to do filming in an exotic location or blow up a few cars.Family: I thought that family was a far to wider audience as most of the film is aimed at children yet have certain points which made both parents and children laugh. This is also a very competitive film genre as all the time new family films are out and taking huge gross figures at the box office; Disney Pixar being a great example of this. I want to do something more unique that will get a chance to be seen instead of being compared to every other family film out there.Thriller & Horror: Most A2 students in the past have done either a horror or a thriller or a hybrid of the two. I think to get a better mark I need to create something unique and isn’t going to bore the examiners when watching. I don’t want my teaser trailer to be just another thriller/horror trailer.Fantasy: Again it was money and time issue, much like action is requires great special effects and spectacular locations and amazing costumes. Out of the 4 Genre’s I had left I had decided to choose*PRESS BUTTON*RomanceThis was because I felt that if I couldn’t achieve comedy successfully, I couldn’t achieve romantic comedy successfully either. I feel that Drama and Chick Flick almost cross-over with Romance anyway; if I choose romance I can add elements of drama and chick flick anyway.*PRESS BUTTON*
  6. After choosing Romance as my film genre I had to do some research into the forms and conventions of this genre. So I went onto the internet and found*PRESS BUTTON*Most films have an aspect of romance yet romantic films have the premise of the story surrounding the romantic relationship between the protagonists. A romance film should have a happy ending (or at least a bittersweet ending) otherwise many would argue that the film is not a romance film just a dramatic film. Romantic films are what keep people’s hopes up about their romantic life, they are what keep themselves feeling happy as if someday they will find someone like in the movies. There should be a struggle or an obstacle of the couple to get over such as; one of them moving away, a person stopping their relationship, parents or society not letting them be together.Mostly it will be have a male and female protagonists, but there are films that break this convention such as Brokeback Mountain. *PRESS BUTTON*My final task of week 1 was to produce mood board of the different films and film posters of the romantic film genre.*PRESS BUTTON*The romance genre is something that usually has the same basis, a man and woman overcome something and fall in love. But usually movie directors are trying to find something unique to there romance film, like Titanic mixing romance with a historical event, Twilight with vampires and were-wolves and Avatar with a whole new planet and race.*PRESS BUTTON*
  7. *PRESS BUTTON*Week 2 commencing 20th September 2010*PRESS BUTTON*My task was to research into different film directors and their films to get inspiration and understand how to take apart a film and look at particular aspects.*PRESS BUTTON*I researched into the academy award winning directors of romance films as I thought this would be a good place to start. MichealCurtiz, Anthony Minghella and James Cameron directed Casablanca, The English Patient and Titanic 3 classic romance films, looking into what made them so famous and special is what could help my narrative become unique and creative. Other famous directors are Roger Michell and Gary Marshall creating classics such as Notting Hill and Pretty Woman. Looking into these two films would also give a great insight into the narrative and representation.*PRESS BUTTON* Whilst researching famous movie directors, Julia Robert seemed to keep appearing in as a lead actress amongst most famous romantic films, such as; pretty woman, notting hill, closer, valentine’s day and eat pray love. My lead actress for my film should have the qualities of Julia Roberts or I could use Julia Roberts in my magazine front cover as an article.*PRESS BUTTON*
  8. *PRESS BUTTON*Following my research into different directors I watched several of their films and reviewed them in each film selecting a specific subject of the media. I started it by watching Notting Hill, and focusing on Narrative.Style. Notting Hill is in the perspective of Hugh Grant and his views on a romance film. The setting of the film is pretty down to earn yet has dream-like aspects, such as having a relationship with a famous film star. It is a predominant romance film yet aspects of romantic comedy. The film features a soundtrack song ‘Ronan Keating – When you say nothing at all’ which shot Keating to fame. With that rise to fame bringing more interest to the film. Narrative – The narrative follows a simple linear structure of Todorov’s theory; equilibrium, disruption, recognition of disruption of order, repair, new equilibrium. This helps keep the story safe and simple for the audience to follow. The characters involved help make the film well loved. The narrative view point of Hugh Grant helps a wider audience than just women. It reaches out to men also because Grant is somebody they can relate to. Inspiration – From this film I am going to use the idea of having the protagonist as a man helping reach a wider audience. I am also going to set the film in a place where is relatable to all audiences.*PRESS BUTTON*I then watched Pretty Woman and focused on Representation.Style – Pretty Woman focuses on two characters, Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. This widens the target audience to women and men as both protagonists allow for narcissism. Again following the simple Todorov narrative theory but this film takes our normal nursery rhyme and flip it around, with the woman rescuing the man, this is buried within the narrative but is a very clever way on putting an original spin on a romance film.  ‘what happens after he climbed up the tower to rescue her’‘she rescues him right back’.Representation – This film encapsulates Laura Mulvey’s gender theories pretty accurately. Roberts is sexualised, an object of desire and seductive. The male gaze theory is very apparent in Pretty Woman as her character is fulfilling the role of a prostitute. That in itself would have most women frowning on her character, yet the complete opposite happens having women relating to her from their lives. This is because of the journey we are taken on and the insight to her character. Inspiration – Because of the research being done in class and the resources available, I am going to retain Laura Mulvey’s gender theory for my film. Making my main love interest ‘an object of desire’.*PRESS BUTTON*Thirdly I watched CasablancaStyle – Casablanca’s style uses great social and historical context within the film and develops the story within that. The film’s narrative has a lot of back story which helps the films narrative move forward. Music is used throughout the film with great effect to help show the mood and atmosphere of a sceneMise-en-scene – Although the film is in black and white the use of colour in costume is cleverly done with focal characters often in white. Lighting and silhouettes are used well for dramatic effect focussing the audiences attention on certain places.Inspiration – The use of colour with in costume is something that I feel I can focus on in my film, lighting I cannot focus so much on because of lack of facilities. Music is also going to help tell my film setting the mood and atmosphere*PRESS BUTTON*
  9. *PRESS BUTTON*Then I had to decide on a target audience for my film My target audienceare the boyfriends of girls that are always being dragged to the cinema against their will to see romantic films which they can never relate to. These boyfriends are around 16-21 years old, are in long lasting relationships and are bored of the same romantic films and yearn for a decent film that them and their girlfriend enjoy. They are up to date with popular culture and will recognise most of the songs from the film. They will want to see it as they want to have a fun night out with their girlfriend. They have been to, or are still at six form/college. They will probably buy the DVD for their girlfriend as a birthday present. I have targeted this film at a male audience as most romance films are aimed at a female audience, yes this is where the main audience for romance films are but aiming it at the boyfriend means that it is a different style. Have a target audience of the boyfriend means that the sales will be larger as they will take along their girlfriends. More than likely a bunch of girls having a ‘girls night out’ will go to watch the film and enjoy it too. I will do this by having the main protagonist as a 16-21 year old man, this will give the target audience a character that they can achieve a narcissistic response from. I heavy influence on my target audience was Roger Michell’s Notting Hill. This is because the film is all from Hugh Grant’s point of view and this made the film much more relatable to a male audience which in turn made the film take in a higher gross sale at the box office.*PRESS BUTTON*In this week I also produced a draft synopsis but this will be shown in my part 2 of research and planning.*PRESS BUTTON*
  10. *PRESS BUTTON*Week 3 commencing 27th September 2010Being new to the media a level course as I am doing AS and A2 in the same year I had a report with Mrs Andrew just to make sure I was on track. My Research to date;Brief: initial research into all 3 elementsProduct development; genre research/planningDirectors of interest and their filmsReviewed a range of similar filmsStars & their characters and representationTarget audience research; how has the audience been researched?Film synopsis/narrative outlinedActionAudience research, clearly define the audienceEstablish a focus groupRead through story and then create a synopsis (size – back of DVD case)Underline keys shotsSkins trailersThis has helped me see that I am on track with my work and see what I need to work on, to make sure that I am hitting all the points on the mark schemeCreating a synopsis and underlining key shots will be covered in research and planning part 2*PRESS BUTTON*I now had to see how I would work on these notes from Mrs Andrew.I decided that the best way to get research into my target audience was to produce a questionnaire because I can then directly see what my audience think and this will help shape my research and planning. For a focus group I am going to ask 10 of my questionnees to look at my work and make sure I am reaching my target audience Watching and deconstructing skins trailers will help the construction of my teaser trailer as this is the biggest selling series of my target audience and reaching issue relevant to them, it also shows the ideologies and beliefs of my target audience.*PRESS BUTTON*
  11. *PRESS BUTTON*I now needed to produce a questionnaire I wanted to see what my audience thought of romance films and who they think they should be aimed at.I gave my questionnaire to 10 women and 10 men so that I had a balanced opinions from both genders. My questionnaire was;QuestionnaireAge: Male/Female:Do you enjoy watching romance films? Why do/don’t you enjoy them?Who do you think romance films are aimed at? Why?How often do you watch romance films?Where do you watch romance films? CINEMA / ON DVD / BOTH*PRESS BUTTON*Here are the results of my questionnaire;Questionnaire resultsQuestion 1 do you enjoy watching romance films?Out of all the men that took the questionnaire;1 guy enjoys romance films – yet ‘it depends on cast, plot and pace of film’The rest do not like watching romance films – ‘boring’ ‘lack of action’ ‘too cheesy’ Out of the women that took the questionnaire; Most enjoy romance films – ‘perfect feel-good film’ ‘seem so perfect’ ‘relating to my own emotions’ 2 women dislike romance films – ‘too cringey and poncey’ ‘unrealistic’ ‘too similar’Here is a pie chart showing the audience for romance films according to my questionees.Already I can see that the main audience for romance films are women, over half of the people questionnaire watch romance films.*PRESS BUTTON*
  12. *PRESS BUTTON*Question 2 who do you think romance films are aimed at?The majority of people confirmed what I had just found out that romance films are aimed at women – ‘young girls and women up to about the age of 30’ ‘teenage girls and middle aged women’ ‘maybe even couples’ The mass audience for romance films are teenage and middle ages women. Aiming my trailer at ‘boyfriends’ are a niche audience, this will not help my film sell. I should re think my audience, targeting more at women.*PRESS BUTTTON*Question 3 How often do you watch romance films?Out of the people that enjoy romance films, these are the results on how often they watch them.I can see that most people only watch romance films once a month so when making this I should consider the fact that my trailer needs to stand out from other romances within each month.*PRESS BUTTON*Question 4 Where do you watch romance films? Most of the people surveyed said that they watch romance films on both DVD and in the cinema, yet the men that disliked the film say they watch them on DVD. I queried these answers and here is what I found – ‘only on DVD cause my girlfriend makes me watch them with her’ ‘oh cause if I’m doing work my mum has it on in the background’ ‘cause I’ll buy them for a mate for a present and then we watch it as a group’The trailer I make needs to be good enough for the film to be something you’d like to watch as a group or go with your boyfriend to watch at home.*PRESS BUTTON*
  13. *PRESS BUTTON*From the questionnaire results it seems that my original target audience of ’16-21 year old boyfriends’ is an audience that I would not be able to establish a focus group from. I still want to keep my audience with in teenagers though as this is an audience that I have a lot of access to being at sixth form. I will more easily be able to relate my teaser trailer to a teenage audience as I can use younger actors and use experiences from real life and up to date modern music and agendas within the film. My results show that women are the main target audience for romance films in general and keeping with this helps reach a mass audience, with evidently is what the teaser trailer is trying to do. My research also mentioned that romance films are aimed at couples, I still want to remain the element of having the film from a man’s perspective this appealing to some men, yet have lots of female characters to keep the narcissism for women. Most of the women watching the film will watch the film in the cinema so I need to make my teaser trailer make an impact that they will buy the DVD to watch with they’re boyfriend at home. For this to happen I feel my teaser trailer should be advertised within most romance films, (as women generally only watch romance films once a month) but also with in some action films or dramatic films, thus appealing reaching out to the boyfriends. As a result of this I am going to be changing my target audience*PRESS BUTTON*My new target audience is girls around 14 – 18 that often bring their boyfriends to the cinema or bring romance films home for them to watch together. These girls will also go to the cinema with a bunch of girls on a ‘girls night out’ to watch the film. They go to the cinema about every month to watch romance films. They will have been in school to at least GCSE level and can appreciate the theme of ‘young love’ and be able to relate the film to their lives. The film will be more down to earth being able to relate much more closely to the audience to create a sense of catharsis. It will also have several fun moments in the film that make it the perfect feel good movie. They will to go and watch the film because of the EMPIRE magazine cover they see and the posters around the cinema. These girls won’t pick up the magazine straight away yet, once watching the film they will pick up the magazine to read on behind the film. The posters of the film will have been around the cinema such as by the ticket stand or by the women’s toilets to entice the audience in more. The trailer will have been placed before romance films at least 2/3 months before so that the audience are aware of the film. It will also be seen on TV 1 week before the release date so that it can the target audience have an idea of the film and it will be in there mind when choosing a film to see that month. Justification I have lowered my target audience’s age from 16-21 as I want to appeal to a more teenage audience as my research has shown that the younger audiences watch romance films more than 21 years old. I have moved from boyfriends to girls with their boyfriends as the mass audience for romantic films are women and I don’t want to completely miss the audience. I have kept the idea of aiming the film also at boyfriends (although now taking a secondary role) as I still want to keep the concept of having a man as the protagonist and view point character. I will still be using heavy influences from Roger Mitchell’s Notting Hill. *PRESS BUTTON*
  14. *PRESS BUTTON*Week 4 commencing 4th October 2010I then produced a questionnaire for my genre making sure that I include everything my target audience want in the narrative and film. Here is my questionnaireQuestionnaireWhat do you expect to see in a romance film? What defines the romance genreWhat would make you want to watch a romance film? What is your favourite film? Why?I only gave my questionnaire to my target audience.*PRESS BUTTON*Here are my results from my questionnaire,Question 1From practically all the results there were several recurring features; ‘attractive characters’, ‘a problem to overcome’, ‘a happy ending’I already have the last two elements in my first draft of my synopsis already, so to achieve the ‘attractive characters’ objective set out by my target audience I should find actors that are attractive.*PRESS BUTTON*Question 2The same answer for question 1 came up as the thing that most people would make them want to watch a romance film, that is ‘attractive characters’. These other two were also very popular: ‘famous actors’ and ‘gripping storylines’. Famous actors is something that I cannot put into this film as I do not know any famous actors or have the money to employ them. Gripping storyline is something which I can achieve by adding twists and turns to keep the audience hooked.*PRESS BUTTON*Question 3 There is one film that appeared in every single questionnaire, bar one. ‘the Twilight Saga’.  I can watch these films and use elements from ‘the Twilight Saga’ with in my film.*PRESS BUTTON*
  15. *PRESS BUTTON*When watching the Twilight film I wanted to focus on narrative;Style – Twilight is from the perspective of Kirsten Stewart’s character. Kirsten Stewart does voice over for a lot of the film introducing the film with a quote which has now become iconic.  ‘Dying in the place of someone you love seems like a good way to go’ This along with the non-digetic sound used, this already sets up Kirsten’s character the mood of the film and ultimately what happens at the end. The way that slow motion has been used in this film is also very evident and really emphasises key points. Narrative – Twilight’s narrative follows Todorov’s theory loosely and contains strong binary oppositions much like Levi Strauss’ theories on myths. Edward Cullen and Jacob Black oppose each other as good and evil. Yet we learn more about each character in the later films in the saga that weaken these binary oppositions.  Inspiration – I am going to use the voice over technique in the trailer and have strong binary oppositions, also the fact that everybody wants Edward Cullen is much like I am going to do with Charlotte, keep her a focal character.*PRESS BUTTON*
  16. *PRESS BUTTON*Week 7 commencing 25th October 2010As a result of a focus group meeting in week 7 which will be shown in;Research and planning – part 2I didn’t to change my target audience as my initial ideas were not targeting them enough for it to sell and be a successful real product.*PRESS BUTTON*I couldn’t use my target audience of 14 – 18 year old girls because as said at my focus group. ‘This film is not unique enough to make me want to watch it’.I thought the best thing to do was go back through the texts I have studied and see how they attracted there audiences.*PRESS BUTTON*SkinsSkins target audience are teenagers, whether they be at sixth form, left school or aspiring to go into higher education. They reach this wide audience by using 9 different characters each representing Britain’s society. With 4 women, 5 men, Within this there are 1 Indian, 1 black and 1 gay. This reaches the multi-cultural society of Britain.I need to try and achieve this dynamic to be able to reach this audience.*PRESS BUTTON*TwilightTwilights target audience are 16 year old girls that are looking for ‘love’ but fail to find it, Twilight reaches its target audience by setting the film in a realistic fairy tale, with were-wolves and vampires. It creates an ideal man that all the audience dream over. The use of Bella's perspective helps the audience sympathies with her and create a stronger link between film and audience.I need to try and set the film in in a realistic fairy tale, an exaggeration of life. I wont be using the were-wolf and vampire technique.*PRESS BUTTON*
  17. *PRESS BUTTON*Week 8 commencing 1stnovember 2010After my focus group and research I need to choose a target audience which I can represent within my film and that my film will appeal to, even if I do have to change some parts of my film.*PRESS BUTTON*I will not be targeting 16 – 21 year oid boyfriendsOr 14 – 18 year old girlsThe audiences I can target are; 16 year old girls much like twilight multi –cultural teenagersAnd middle aged women.I feel that 16 year old girls are much like my previous target audience, and middle aged women requires me to look outside of school for actors and audience members which is just not feasible with the amount of work load on a A level student.*PRESS BUTTON*I have decided on marketing my products to a similar audience of skins. This is because;Shows like inbetweeners, misfits and skins are selling highly as TV shows yet a film has not been made yet and this is where I feel there is a gap in the market for a British teenage film. These are aged between 15 – 19, to be able to achieve this audience in a film I need to make my film a 15 not an 18 like inbetweeners, misfits and skins. Therefore I will have tune down certain aspects yet keep the same feel of ‘skins’. To do this I am going to have one character who is a ‘wild’ skins character yet the film will be more down to earth than the skins drugs, alcohol, sex and parties culture shown.I still want to keep my film centered on romance and to do this I am keeping it from a Jay’s point of view rather than switching between characters. This audience is different to My first two audience drafts as they do not appeal to a niche audience but a mass audience. I cannot be as completely multi-cultural as skins though because I do not have many other cultures accessible to me so my film will be majority white like skins, I also cannot have a gay person in the film as this would defeat the object of the film. I will be tackling issue that are related to these cultures though and if it was accessible to me then I would involve these cultures.Target audience; teenager 15 – 19 who enjoy skins, inbetweeners and misfits and the culture within them.*PRESS BUTTON*
  18. *PRESS BUTTON*Finally I had to make sure that my focus group were ok with my target audience and to make sure that this was right for my film. Here are the discussions from the meeting;8 of my 10 people in my focus group believe that this is now an appropriate target audience, they said much as I said that they would watch this because of the popular of skins and misfits. All of my focus group thought that a new character would bring the skins feel to the film without destroying characters already built up.The suggestions from my focus group will be covered in research and planning – part 2 as these aren’t to do with similar products or target audiences.*PRESS BUTTON*
