4. What Is Komen For The Cure?
• Susan Goodman Komen of Peoria, Illinois was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33, she died 3
years later in 1980.
• During those 3 years her sister Nancy Goodman Brinker promised to help find a way to speed up cancer
research and treatment.
• In 1982 the Susan G. Komen Foundation was officially started in Komen’s Memory.
• Komen has dedicated nearly 1 billion dollars to research and treatment of breast cancer.
• For over 27 years a series of 5k events “the race for the cure” has been held to bring awareness and financial
contributions for breast cancer awareness.
5. Who Is The People’s Chef?
• My name is Dominick Zirilli and I lost my mother and aunt both to breast
cancer within the past 5 years.
• I have 3 sisters and 2 daughters who I want to help and make a difference for in
the future.
• I know hundreds of daughters, mothers, wives, aunts and sisters who could at
any moment be affected by this disease.
• I am participating in my first ever race (I’m not that fast so it’s more of a
challenge) so I can do my part in raising money and awareness for this cause.
