@ A general practitioner (or GP) is a doctor who treats the most common,
everyday illnesses.
@ A medical specialist is a doctor who treats specific illnesses.
@ People usually go to hospital if they have a medical emergency. They can also go
there for test and medical treatments.
Illnesses have specific
symtoms, like fever,
pain or coughing. A doctor makes diagnosis

3. TYPES OF ILLNESSES
Infectious diseases are caused
by microorganism.
Non-infectious diseases
include allergies, obesity,
malnutrion, substance abuse
and mental illness.

4. INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Bacteria virus, protozoan and fungi are common microorganism.
Some of them are not harmful to humans, but others can cause
infectious diseases.
Bacteria can cause diseases like tuberculosis, tetanus or
salmonellosis. We can treat some bacterial infections with
antibiotics.
Viruses are harmful. They cause flu, measles, rubella and AIDS. We
can treat some viruses with antiviral medicines.
Protozoans cause malaria, cholera and amoebic. We can reeat some
of these with anti-protist medicines.
Fungi cause diseases of the skin, hair and nail. Athelete´s foot is a
common example. We treats it with antifungal (or antimycotic)
medicines.

To prevent infectious diseases, we must keep healthy lifestyle
habits and follow a schedule of vaccinations.

A vaccine is a substance that

microorganism can´t make you ill,
but they help your body to resist
the same disease in the future.

substances called antibodies.

7. PREVENTING NON-INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Have a balanced diet. Do regular exercise. Get 8-10 hours of sleep.
