History
Traditional differences between Medical Technology and IT:

    Medical devices are life critical
    If a life critical system fails or is otherwise compromised, it
    will have a significant negative impact on the patients
    health,
    quality of care or safety.

    Information Technology systems are mission critical:
    If a mission critical application fails, crashes, or is otherwise
    unavailable to the organization, it will have a significant
    negative impact upon the business.

Trends in Medical Technology
            Medical devices consist of computers and software

            Medical devices store patient data locally on the computer (= part
            of patient record).

            Functionality in medical devices is increasing causing an increase
            of medical data that needs to be collected, analysed and stored in
            these devices.

            Rapidly growing integration and interconnection of different
            medical and IT devices.

            Medical data between medical and IT devices is being increasingly
            exchanged.

Trends in integration of Medical Technology and IT

Accessibility, analysis and comparing data from a broad variety of
medical data from different sources :
•Automatic “filling” of data in EPR

•Closed loop systems (output becomes input)

•Integration of messages (e.g. medical alarms)

•Medical devices traceability

•Remote maintenance medical devices (e.g. hemodynamic
patient monitoring)
Trends of Medical Technology hospital wide

•Central storage of medical images (radiology/video)

•Central storage of physiological data

•Remote viewing of digital medical data/information

•Viewing medical images within EPR

•From decentralised to centralised

•Central planning (One stop shopping)

Identify all pieces of the patient record generated in the hospital

All medical devices should be connected (not only the easy ones)

Integration of (medical or IT) devices into a standard environment
(EPD, PACS)

Educate user to store only the relevant data

IT Infrastructural issues should be solved

Using Visus JiveX for integration in EPD

Using Visus JiveX AMG for standardisation of medical image data



Status:
- 70 devices connected (outside Radiology department)
- 8 TBytes central stored
- 110.000 studies available
- 130 studies a day generated

Key Challenges
Due to the highly “connected” environment, medical technology
can best be addressed by bringing the expertise of both
professions together in a team effort.


Both professions need to coordinate their efforts and develop
solutions on the industry and the hospital level.


Formal integration of both departments is necessary for
effective coordination
