2. Totalitarianism and drugs For centuries, man has been confined by the tyranny of oppressive governments. These governments often use drugs to enslave the minds and bodies of their subjects.

3. Examples in literature…Drugs in 1984: Victory gin Big Brother encourages people to drink victory gin to pacify their hunger and keep them from realizing that they are hungry at all. Big Brother has created an environment where his hungry people have no choice but to drink the gin in order to dull the harmful effects of the totalitarian society.

Drugs in Brave New World: Soma Designed to induce a feeling of placid happiness or hallucination-filled ecstasy (depending on how much is taken), soma is routinely abused by all citizens of the World State. For the World Controllers of the World State society, achieving social stability is the main goal of civilization. Therefore, this form of instant indulgence is the World Controllers’ ultimate weapon against the public.
