4. Technology is a tool to foster a
community of learners. When
technology is used to connect,
communicate, and create, it can
strengthen the face-to-face
learning environment and
enhance the quality of
interaction amongst learners.

26. Two Truths and a Lie
Introduce yourself to the class in a paragraph or
two. Here are a few ideas: Why are you taking an
online class? What are you most interested in
working on in this course? What experience do
you have with academic reading, writing, and basic
composition? How do your friends and family
describe you? Feel free to include a photo, or say
hello through video!
Then--just for fun--tell us three things about
yourself: two truths and one lie. In responses, we
will try to identify the lie. You will let us know which
one was false by the end of the week!
27. Wow I have really enjoyed reading all the introductions. It has
made me want to try new and old hobbies. I have put many of my
social activities on hold, because of my focus on school. I realize I
have to step up and enjoy life as well. Having been a student at
San Diego Mesa College for a little over a year has been great.
Being an older student, I was not sure how I was going to handle
going back to school. So far so good. On line classes have worked
out great for me. What time I have left, it is spent with my family
and friends. They may describe me as self-determined, reliable,
and friendly.
This class has my anxiety level at high. You see writing is not my
fortitude. I actually dislike it. I much prefer to read --books,
magazines, or pretty much anything. By taking this class I hope to
change my attitude towards writing, and slowly evolve into decent
writer.
Truths and Lies:
1. 90 degree weather is my comfort level.
2. I love vegetables.
3. My brother, sister, and I are born in the same month.
50. A Community of Respect
Nadia, I love your topic

book is the most
important thing. Keep
holding the precious
book and following it.
Hello Andrea, Wow it is a beautiful
story. I really liked and also you
made me smile at the end when you
mention about the finger that you use
her ring. Also, it is a precious
memory as same as you I have a
bracelet that my grandmother gave to
me before she pass away.

The purpose of this presentation
First taught in the dirt in a rural village in Bots. As ESL we love hands-on activities, and we still do. But what I’ve found is that tech can enhance and increase the community and take it beyond the classroom walls but bring us closer together when we are in the classroom.
My current classes are not online or in labs. Wifi doesn’t even work sometimes. Utilizing students tools. Going to labs when possible. Doing many “normal” ESL activities in the f2f classroom.
Snapchat. Instagram. Pokemon go. This is the world we inhabit. How do we prepare students to be aware educationally? K-12 uses tech, lots of 1-1 tablets. What happens when we have them in our classroom
Multple classes, many semesters, not all at once! Want to offer you a smorgasboard so that if even one tiny idea plants itself as something you can do.
Be ready. Errors happen when you aren’t prepared, but also be willing to try. Have students help you.
A community needs a venue to meet. Where will yours be?
Because I need a “landing page” Community information.
All of these have mobile apps. A big plus for a busy teacher/mom . . . Especially adjunct. Can check in my car/etc. I look for mobile – always mobile. (Canvas and Edmodo too). What about access on campus? We need to think about that as well
At many of my first workshops for Bb and Moodle it was all about how to dump your work into the bucket. Add worksheets. Link to videos. Put up assignments. YES. But also use the tools that build the community: profiles/webpages. Blogs. Wikis. Chat. Forums. Remember when they used to have to get each others’ phone numbers? They already have the framework for finding each other.
Can students find you on the college webpage? Story about overhearing students talking about teachers.
Rate your Professor / LinkedIn /
How do they know you have a special community? Build it from Day 1
push out before class. Build anticipation. Get your message out.
Online class – what are we going to do? Short!
Actually do one – in groups – show sample student reports
add new ones – maybe a chart – no one has a printer. Video and audio usage. I can add my survey to my site. Don’t assume – know what you are really working with.
establish communication pathways early. What is required and official. What is optional and extra. What’s for fun. What is easiest? Blackboard . . .. Remind . . IG etc. Look at the views.
Your Life in 6 Words . . . Two Truths and a Lie
First day – after seeing the other prof’s syllabus with all of the dire consequences of what happens if their cell phone sees the light of day. Engagement. A way to establish how we will incorporate in in educational ways. There are lots of apps – online flashcards, voice recordings, images . . . Etc.
My online class.
204!!!!! The community is being built.
Fun “quizzes” or surveys – from thesis statements to review – in teams or pairs . . . With wifi in classrooms or in labs . . .
Let’s try this! Get in teams. Let’s go!
My gateway to tech. The quietest had so much to say. They had time to prepare and think about it. They weren’t controlled by the 3-4 students, they could practice academic discourse.
Add new one
Online introductions. – notice the map is upside down.
Video – I feel like I was there. I know she is in the class. I see her book!
This can work with ANY discipline. Images / video / ppt / documents . . . Mobile is easy.
Add in the one about identity
You can do this with vocab / ideas / writing / math prompts . . .
Add student blogs – from passion projects
Students are invested. Write personally and authentically.
respect – safe space – netiquette - moderation
Research and creating content. Learning about images and video –lots of free sites.
How do you reflect on and present your work? What happens to it?
300 million active users – for fun! These are ways to continue the classroom community outside of the walls of the classroom and join together different sections and groups.
Sooner or later it ends. How do we maintain contact w/our community?
22 archived videos farewell . . .
she continued the blog even though she had gone back to Colombia . . .esp w/ESL when they leave and go home those connections are important
ESOL 21 – now we have more readers at their level. For online class – at B and N – these books are based on our themes from the semester.
these are all ways they help
choose one. Do it over and over till you feel comfortable. Don’t be afraid to dump something.
Start with your goal – NOT the tech. What do you want to do? What is your goal? Is there any tech that will make that better?
