Olympians
1 Read about the Olympic competitors. Complete the texts using the words below.
Some of the words will change slightly.
cheat (a person who acts dishonestly)
      cheer (a shout of happiness)
      crawl (move very slowly)
      drop out (abandon, leave)
eel (a long fish like a snake)
gymnast (a person who does gymnastics)
hitch a lift (get a free ride in a car)
      huge (very big)
official (person in charge of something)
      rejoin (return to)

When we think of the Olympic Games, we usually remember the great athletes and the best
performances. However, the Games are a (a) huge event and all kinds of people take part.
Perhaps you have not heard of the people mentioned here. They also had their own special moments
at the Olympic Games.

Shizo Kanaguri was a Japanese runner in the 1912 marathon race. His family were
having a picnic near the road, and Shizo decided to stop and say hello. Soon he was
eating and drinking with them. In the end, he was having such a good time that he
decided to stay where he was. He never (b) the race.

Fred Lorz was one of the biggest (c) in the history
of the Olympic Games. In 1904, in St Louis, he ‘won’ the marathon
race. He even had his photo taken with Alice Roosevelt, the
President’s daughter. When he was on the point of receiving the gold medal at the
medal ceremony, some (d) who had accompanied the runners began
to protest loudly. It turned out that Fred had (e) of the race after nine
miles, (f) for the next eleven miles and then started running again.
He then arrived first at the finishing line. Naturally, there was no medal that day for Fred.

In 1904, the American (g) George Eyser collected two gold medals in
one day — one on the vault and the other on the parallel bars. The amazing thing was
that George had only one leg. His left leg had been amputated after a train accident.
Wearing a wooden leg, George managed to beat his fellow competitors.

Our last story is an example of the true Olympic spirit. At the
Sydney Games in 2000, swimmer Eric Moussambani of Equatorial
Guinea became the people’s champion after (h) home in the 100-metre
freestyle. His time of 1 min 52.72 sec was more than a minute outside the world record
 — the slowest time ever recorded in the event. All the other swimmers had finished the
race when Eric finally arrived to the (i) of the spectators. He did not win
a medal, but he gained the affectionate name of ‘Eric the (j) ’.

  • 5. Risk takers 3.5 Culture Unit3 Olympians 1 Read about the Olympic competitors. Complete the texts using the words below. Some of the words will change slightly. cheat (a person who acts dishonestly) cheer (a shout of happiness) crawl (move very slowly) drop out (abandon, leave) eel (a long fish like a snake) gymnast (a person who does gymnastics) hitch a lift (get a free ride in a car) huge (very big) official (person in charge of something) rejoin (return to) When we think of the Olympic Games, we usually remember the great athletes and the best performances. However, the Games are a (a) huge event and all kinds of people take part. Perhaps you have not heard of the people mentioned here. They also had their own special moments at the Olympic Games. Shizo Kanaguri was a Japanese runner in the 1912 marathon race. His family were having a picnic near the road, and Shizo decided to stop and say hello. Soon he was eating and drinking with them. In the end, he was having such a good time that he decided to stay where he was. He never (b) the race. Fred Lorz was one of the biggest (c) in the history of the Olympic Games. In 1904, in St Louis, he ‘won’ the marathon race. He even had his photo taken with Alice Roosevelt, the President’s daughter. When he was on the point of receiving the gold medal at the medal ceremony, some (d) who had accompanied the runners began to protest loudly. It turned out that Fred had (e) of the race after nine miles, (f) for the next eleven miles and then started running again. He then arrived first at the finishing line. Naturally, there was no medal that day for Fred. In 1904, the American (g) George Eyser collected two gold medals in one day — one on the vault and the other on the parallel bars. The amazing thing was that George had only one leg. His left leg had been amputated after a train accident. Wearing a wooden leg, George managed to beat his fellow competitors. Our last story is an example of the true Olympic spirit. At the Sydney Games in 2000, swimmer Eric Moussambani of Equatorial Guinea became the people’s champion after (h) home in the 100-metre freestyle. His time of 1 min 52.72 sec was more than a minute outside the world record — the slowest time ever recorded in the event. All the other swimmers had finished the race when Eric finally arrived to the (i) of the spectators. He did not win a medal, but he gained the affectionate name of ‘Eric the (j) ’. 16 © Richmond Publishing, 2004 PHOTOCOPIABLE
