3. Jesus The Servant
• The Gospel of Mark focuses on the servant
hood of Jesus;
• Mark 10:45 "For even the Son of Man did not
come to be served, but to serve, and to give
His life a ransom for many.“ [Matthew 20:28, Philippians 2:7]
• Isaiah 42:1 "Behold, My Servant…
4. 4 Gospels Reflect 4 “Beholds”
• Ray Stedman in “Behold Your King” says 4 gospels reflect 4 “Beholds”;
• KJV Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of
Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having
salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
• KJV Isaiah 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom
my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth
judgment to the Gentiles. 2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice
to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the
smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the
earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.
• KJV Zechariah 6:12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of
hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall
grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:
• KJV Isaiah 12:2 Behold, God is my salvation [yeshuah]; I will trust, and not
be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is
become my salvation [yeshuah].
5. Jesus As “The Son Of God”
The Suffering Servant
• Mark also reveals Jesus As “The Son Of God” in
Mark 1:1
• The Father said;
• Mark 1:11 and a voice came out of the heavens:
"You are My beloved Son…
• Mark 9:7 Then a cloud formed, overshadowing
them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is
My beloved Son, listen to Him!"
6. Jesus As “The Son Of God”
The Suffering Servant
• The demons;
• Mark 3:11 Whenever the unclean spirits saw
Him, they would fall down before Him and
shout, "You are the Son of God!"
• Mark 5:7 and shouting with a loud voice, he
said, "What business do we have with each
other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I
implore You by God, do not torment me!"
7. Jesus As “The Son Of God”
The Suffering Servant
• Jesus Himself;
• Mark 13:32 "But of that day or hour no one
knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the
Son, but the Father alone.
• Mark 14:61…the high priest was questioning Him,
and saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of
the Blessed One?" 62 And Jesus said, "I am; and
you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE
RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE
CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."
8. Jesus As “The Son Of God”
The Suffering Servant
• The centurion;
• Mark 15:39 When the centurion, who was
standing right in front of Him, saw the way He
breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was
the Son of God!"
10. Mark 4:1, Jesus Got Into A Boat In The
Sea And Sat Down
• But not a boat like this!
11. Mark 4:1, And In Matthew 13 He
Began To Teach Using Parables
• Mark 4:1 He began to teach [using parables] again by
the sea. And such a very large crowd gathered to Him
that He got into a boat in the sea and sat down; and
the whole crowd was by the sea on the land.
• And many of us are still confused by His parables
• I consider the parables to be very dangerous ground. If
you miss the context and who He’s speaking to you can
end up thinking you could lose your salvation, the
church is the kingdom now, this is as good as it gets,
you can buy your salvation by giving up everything or
purchasing a field or pearl, or that you may be a weed
that will be burned up.

Parable of the Sower
Mark 4:3–20, Matthew 13:3–23, Luke 8:5–15

Mark 4:26-29, The Gradually Growing Seed
Parable of the Mustard Seed
Mark 4:30–32, Matt 13:31–33, Luke 13:18–21
13. Parables of the Kingdom
or Kingdom Parables
• Wikipedia says, “…the parables of Jesus
remain some of the best known stories in the
world…”
14. Mark 4:1, He Began To Teach
• Mark 4:1 He began to teach again by the sea. And such a
very large crowd gathered to Him that He got into a boat in
the sea and sat down; and the whole crowd was by the sea
on the land.
• The parallel passage in Matthew 13 adds;
• Matthew 13:1 On that day Jesus went out of the house,
and was sitting by the sea.
• What house?
• What sea?
• When I see “house, or the land” I think= Israel
• When I see “sea” I think= gentiles
• Jesus is about to leave the house of Israel and go to the
gentiles
15. Mark 4 Is
The “seediest” Chapter In The Bible
• Mark 4:4 as he was sowing, some
seed fell beside the road, and the
birds came and ate it up.
• Well, it’s tied with Matthew 13.
The both have 9 NASU uses of
“seed”
• Matthew 13:31 He presented
another parable to them, saying,
"The kingdom of heaven is like a
mustard seed, which a man took
and sowed in his field;
18. Mark 4:3-20, Parable of the Sower
• wikipedia says, “The synoptics go on to state that Jesus quoted the Book
of Isaiah, stating that by hearing you shall hear but not understand, by
seeing you shall see and not perceive, and that the people were hard of
hearing, with closed eyes Isaiah 6:9-10. After this, the synoptics provide an
explanation of the parable:
• The sower sows the word
• The seeds falling on the road represent those who hear the word but
dismiss it straight away - the synoptics state that the wicked
one (Matthew's wording)/Satan (Mark's wording) is what takes the
word away
• The seeds falling on the rocks represent those who hear the word, but
only accept it shallowly - the synoptics state that these sorts of people
reject the word as soon as it causes them affliction or persecution
• The seeds falling on thorns represent those who hear the word, and take it
to heart, but allow worldly concerns, such as money, to choke it.
• The seeds falling on good soil represents those who hear the word, and
truly understand it, causing it to bear fruit.”
19. Mark 4:11, The Kingdom Of God,
The Kingdom Of Heaven
• Mark 4:11 And He was saying to them, "To you
has been given the mystery of the kingdom of
God, but those who are outside get everything in
parables,
• The phrase “kingdom of heaven” is used 32 X’s in
Matthew, NASU, and not once in Mark
• The phrase “kingdom of God” is used 4 X’s in
Matthew, NASU, and 14 X’s in Mark
• The word “repent” is used 3 X’s in Matthew,
NASU, and only 2 X’s in Mark
20. Mark 4:11, The Kingdom Of God,
The Kingdom Of Heaven
• Remember that Matthew’s focus is presenting
the “The King of the Jews” to the Jews
• Mark’s focus is presenting the “suffering
servant/Savior” to the gentiles
• Thus the focus “kingdom” is so great in Matthew,
and much less in Mark
• The word “kingdom” is used 53 X’s in Matthew,
NASU, and only 18 X’s in Mark
• The only use like this in Mark is; Mark 1:15…the
kingdom of God is at hand; repent….
21. Mark 4:11, Repent, For The Kingdom
Of Heaven Is At Hand?
• Mark 4:11 And He was saying to them, "To you has
been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but
those who are outside get everything in parables,
• Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach
and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at
hand."
• Mark 6:12 They went out and preached that men
should repent.
• The phrase "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at
hand" disappears after Matthew 4:17, and Mark 4:11.
The offer of the kingdom is withdrawn after Matthew
chapter 12, and Mark 4:11. From this point on Jesus
will only speak in an understandable way to those few
who will follow Him.
22. Mark 4:12, NOT UNDERSTAND
• Mark 4:12 so that WHILE SEEING, THEY MAY SEE AND
NOT PERCEIVE, AND WHILE HEARING, THEY MAY HEAR
AND NOT UNDERSTAND, OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT
RETURN AND BE FORGIVEN.“
• 4920 συνίημι suniemi {soon-ee'-ay-mee}
• Meaning: 1) to set or bring together 1a) in a hostile
sense, of combatants 2) to put (as it were) the
perception with the thing perceived 2a) to set or join
together in the mind 2a1) i.e. to understand: the man
of understanding 2a2) idiom for: a good and upright
man (having the knowledge of those things which
pertain to salvation)…
23. Mark 4:12, The Seeing Eye
• This is so important to understand that it is in
3 gospels Luke 8:10, Matthew 13:14, Mark
4:12 “…WHILE SEEING, THEY MAY SEE AND
NOT PERCEIVE…”
• It’s quoting Isaiah 6:9 He said, "Go, and tell
this people: 'Keep on listening, but do not
perceive; Keep on looking, but do not
understand.‘…
24. Let’s Turn To Isaiah 6:1-13
• In Isaiah 6:1-7, Isaiah saw the Lord and was “blown away”. Then God asks
who will go; he says;
• 8 …Then I said, "Here am I. Send me!"
• 9 And He said, "Go, and tell this people: 'Keep on listening, but do not
perceive; Keep on looking, but do not understand.'
• 10 "Render the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, And their
eyes dim, Lest they see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand
with their hearts, And return and be healed."
• 11 Then I said, "Lord, how long?" And He answered, "Until cities are
devastated and without inhabitant [the diaspora],, Houses are without
people, And the land is utterly desolate, [The Great Tribulation]
• 12 "The LORD has removed men far away [the diaspora], And the forsaken
places are many in the midst of the land.
• 13 "Yet there will be a tenth portion in it, And it will again be subject to
burning, Like a terebinth or an oak Whose stump remains when it is felled.
The holy seed is its stump [KJV=remnant]."
25. Mark 4:12, The Seeing Eye
• Mark 4:12 so that WHILE SEEING, THEY MAY
SEE AND NOT PERCEIVE…
• Proverbs 20:12 The hearing ear and the seeing
eye, The LORD has made both of them.
• He is “The Potter” He can open or close eyes
• THE EYES:

27. Mark 4:15, Satan Takes The Word
• Mark 4:15 "These are the ones who are beside the road where
the word is sown; and when they hear, immediately Satan
comes and takes away the word which has been sown in
them.
• 2 Corinthians 4:4…the god of this world has blinded the minds
of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the
gospel…
• 2 Corinthians 2:11 …Satan…his schemes.
• 1 Peter 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary,
the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone
to devour.
• Thomas Manton says, “It is Satan's custom by small sins to
draw us to greater, as the little sticks set the great ones on fire,
and a wisp of straw kindles a block of wood.”
• Acts 5:3
28. Mark 4:19, The Worries Of The World
• Mark 4:19 but the worries of the world, and the
deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things
enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
• Matthew 13:22
• Will Rogers said, “Don't let yesterday use up too much
of today.”
• Luke 21:34 "Be on guard, so that your hearts will not
be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness
and the worries of life, and that day will not come on
you suddenly like a trap; 35 for it will come upon all
those who dwell on the face of all the earth.
29. Mark 4:19, Too Busy= Unfruitful
• Mark 4:19 but the worries of the world, and the
deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things
enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

him to Israel, sent gardeners (Hebrews 11:37

of God, or by what parable shall we present it? 31 "It is like a

• Matthew 13:31 He presented another parable to them,

57. Mark 4:29, Harvest Has Come
• Women harvest wheat with sickles then bind it by hand in a field in
1956.PHOTOGRAPH BY FRANC AND JEAN SHORE, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
Mark 4:29 "But when the crop permits, he immediately
puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.“
The disciples were the ones that Jesus harvested out of
Israel, the rest of God’s vineyard was scorched in 70AD.
58. Mark 4:34, His Own Disciples
• Mark 4:34 and He did not speak to them without a
parable; but He was explaining everything privately to
His own disciples.
• Jesus is making a huge distinction between the lost and
the saved, the “wheat and the tares”
• Harvesting out “His own disciples” and not even
“explaining” His words to the religious leaders, the
“them,” the “tares” (Matt 13:30), or “the field” left
behind after the treasure has been removed, or the
oyster left behind after the “pearl” has been
removed, or the “bad” fish (Matt 13:48) that were
thrown away.
60. Mark 4:35, Go To The Other Side
• Mark 4:35 On that day, when evening came, He
said to them, "Let us go over to the other side.“
• He’s leaving Israel and going across the lake to
the gentiles.
• I wonder if there was a sound of disgust in His
voice as He left? He’s in the boat and He doesn’t
even get out, they just leave.
• Mark 4:36 Leaving the crowd, they took Him
along with them in the boat, just as He was; and
other boats were with Him.
61. Mark 4:39,
Satan Is Real, Jesus Rebuked
• Mark 4:39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to
the sea, "Hush, be still." And the wind died down and it
became perfectly calm.
• Here Jesus is on the Sea of Galilee and He "rebuked" the
storm, rather than simply commanding it to stop.
• It obviously was not doing His will. So who’s will was it doing?
• Prior to the fall, and Satan becoming “the god of this world”
(Genesis 3). We find in Genesis 2:6 , “… a mist used to rise
from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.”
• I believe that during the 1000-year Millennial Reign of Christ,
when Satan is bound, that this part of the curse will be
reversed, and our weather will not need to be “rebuked”.
62. Mark 4:40, Then He Rebuked Them
• Mark 4:40 And He said to them, "Why are you
afraid? Do you still have no faith?" And He
said to them, "Why are you afraid? Do you
still have no faith?“
• Do you still have no faith?“ faith in what?
• Mark 4:35 …He said to them, "Let us go over
toxxx the other side.“
• He didn’t say, “Let’s go drown.”
63. Mark 4:41, Who Is This?
• Mark 4:41 They became very much afraid and
said to one another, "Who then is this, that
even the wind and the sea obey Him?“
• What a great question!
• Nothing else matters!
• Jesus asked them in Matthew 16:15 He said to
them, "But who do you say that I am?"

65. Mark 6:51, The Wind Stopped
• Mark 6:51 Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind
stopped; and they were utterly astonished,
• Matthew 14:32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped.
• Psalm 107:21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His
lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! 22 Let
them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with
joyful singing…. 25 For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which
lifted up the waves of the sea…. 28 Then they cried to the LORD in
their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. 29 He
caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were
hushed. 30 Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He
guided them to their desired haven. 31 Let them give thanks to the
LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of
men!
