Based on a survey of over 4,500 researchers published in the white paper The State of Open Data 2020, this session will explore the impacts of the pandemic on early career reearchers (ECRs), their research practice, and how they interact with open data. We will discuss the specific challenges reported by ECRs, as well as the gaps in training and support that they have identified that would encourage their sharing and reuse of research data. Presentation at the E-ARMA conference 2021.

Abstract: Background: Dataset submissions are growing exponentially. Links between dataset submissions and primary literature that describe the data collection are useful for many reasons: rich documentation, proper attribution, improved information retrieval, and enhanced text/data integration for analysis. Unfortunately, many database submissions do not include primary citation links, as database submissions are often made prior to publication. We suggest that automated tools can be developed to help identify links between dataset submissions and the primary literature. These tools require full text to differentiate cases of data sharing from data reuse and other contexts. In this study, we explore the possibility that deep analysis of full text may not be necessary, thereby enabling the querying of all reports in PubMed Central. Methods: We trained machine learning tree and rule-based classifiers on full-text open-access article unigram vectors, with the existence of a primary citation link from NCBI’s Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database submission records as the binary output class. We manually combined and simplified the classifier trees and rules to create a query compatible with the interface for PubMed Central. Results: The query identified 40% of non-OA articles with dataset submission links from GEO (recall), and 65% of the returned articles without dataset submission links were manually judged to include statements of dataset deposit despite having no link from the database (applicable precision). Conclusion: We hope this work inspires future enhancements, and highlights the opportunities for simple full-text queries in PubMed Central given the mandated influx of NIH-funded research reports.

Digital badges have previously been shown to incentivise journal authors to share their data openly. In this paper we introduce an Open data badging project at the Springer Nature journal BMC Microbiology. The development of the Open data badge is described, as well as the challenges of developing standard badging criteria and ensuring authors’ awareness of the badges. Next steps for the badging project are outlined, which are based on the experiences of the team assessing the badges, the number of badges awarded at the journal to date, and the results of an author survey.

This session will cover the developing Crossref Event Data service, with a focus on use cases. Created in collaboration with DataCite, Event Data provides the raw data of ‘events’ of scholarly publications outside traditional channels, e.g. Twitter and blogs, as well as links between data and publications. The session will incorporate technical and outreach perspectives on the ‘DIY’ possibilities and responsibilities of having an abundance of transparent event data. Audience feedback and participation is very much encouraged!

The needs of researchers in key disciplines are changing rapidly and this has important implications for the library’s role in enhancing research productivity and impact. Librarians can build a roadmap for supporting 21st Century research needs that draws on both published research sources and institution-specific user research. Several key trends from recent studies and ideas for institution-specific user research tools are highlighted within.

Ideas that seem obvious today, at one point were obscure facts known only to a select few. The health benefits of washing hands, wearing a seatbelt while in a car - none of these ideas and practices were accepted immediately. In addition to needing time to incubate, new ideas also need to be accessible so that they can be tested, debated, and built upon. This presentation, which is based on my previous research and personal experiences, will highlight the importance and connection between open access publishing and the role of social media in promotion and dissemination of scholarly research.

Slides from my NFAIS talk, 25 May 2017, as part of a webinar entitled "How Social Should Social Collaborative Networks (SCNs) Be?". Abstract: In this session, Rapple shares data and insight from a recent study of 7,500 researchers and their sharing behaviors. She discusses the driving factors for SCN use, how frequently researchers accessed them, and for what underlying purposes. She also addresses researcher perceptions on copyright and sharing, the real value researchers receive from SCNs, and how changes in researcher behavior might affect publishers and libraries.

In the social media landscape of user generated content, should the unit of measurement be ‘conversations’ rather than ‘respondents? This session focused on the pros and cons of ethnography, using a pan-European case study on schizophrenia, as an example of how companies, even those who focus on healthcare research, can get value from listening to their consumers. The presentation looked at how to make the most of the benefits of new technology – text analytics, scraping – whilst still needing human intelligence and different perspectives. Research panels are under a lot of pressure: for far too long we have treated panels as ordinary databases. As a result, response rates to traditional surveys are in decline and it becomes harder to motivate people to participate in research projects. As researchers, we have to look into alternatives that still allow us to learn about the attitudes and behavior of consumers. Thanks to the rise of social media, a whole new stream of consumer information has become available and our industry is embracing it as the new Walhalla. By using methods such as ‘social media netnography’ in which online conversations and stories are observed, researchers learn from online sources of textual and visual information that are freely available (Verhaeghe, Van den Berge, Schillewaert, 2009). Instead of asking new input from research participants, existing information is recycled. Because consumers are free to talk about whatever they like, social media netnography does not only provide answers on research questions one already had, but it also gives answers to questions they did not ask and answers without asking questions. User-generated content is a welcome new source of information for researchers. But unlike our research panels, we should treat this new ecosystem with caution and preserve it while we still can. We need to learn from the past when we experiment with new ways of doing research.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.

This slide will show how to set domains for a field in odoo 17. Domain is mainly used to select records from the models. It is possible to limit the number of records shown in the field by applying domain to a field, i.e. add some conditions for selecting limited records.
