should be allowed to express themselves and how they want to dress. People will express themselves
through other means, like tattoos and piercings. These are a more permanent solution for striving for
individuality instead of wearing what they want. In the University Notre Dame's Sociology
Department conducted a study on the effects of uniforms on students, they discovered that there was
no interference with "substance abuse, behavioral problems or attendance." (The Journal of
Educational Research) The research concluded that not having a uniform does not correlate with the
overall environment of the students. Individuality is what makes up the world we live in and taking
away the individuality takes away the freedom to express who you are and conform to society. The
prohibition of individuality, prohibits diversity in the school. School should be a place of learning
both academically and from the many cultures and religions around us. Uniforms can restrict people
from practicing their religious expression through clothing. School uniforms do not lower chances of
bullying. Texas Southern University conducted a study on uniforms and behavioral atmosphere of
students and saw that "school incidents rose about 12% after the introduction of uniforms". (ProCon)

Should uniforms be allowed in schools? This is the heated debate that has no sign of stopping.
There is a lot of evidence for each side with different points of views from the teachers to the kids
to a developmental psychologist, but I'm going to talk about my side of this debate. This is my
report on why uniforms should not be allowed in public schools. Uniforms should not be allowed in
public schools because the cost of uniforms can cause serious financial problems, kids can't express
themselves, and it doesn't affect their learning ability, growth, or their motivation toward school.
My first reason is that if uniforms are allowed in public schools, then kids won't be able to express

They say because everyone looks alike, they won't have pressure for getting expensive clothes to fit
in and won't get bullied for their clothes, but there is no evidence that this is true. They may say that
they won't get bullied for their clothes, but it can become a competition for who looks best in the
uniform or a plus sized girl might get bullied for "not looking good enough" in the uniform. The
uniform might even increase violence. In a study, it showed that when schools went into uniforms,
most of the school's violence went up.
For the record, uniforms should not be allowed in public schools because it can cause issues in a
family with financial problems, kids can't express themselves and feel more comfortable, and most
of all, it doesn't affect things like motivation, attitudes toward schools, academic ability, and the

With the gang activity growing throughout the 80's school officials realized that implementing
uniforms or strict dress codes may help combat the problem with gang apparel in schools.
Previously dress codes have been seen in the form of uniforms or strict rules in parochial, private
and public school systems across the country. In private schools, uniforms were first implemented
to mark a student's social status (Motsinger par 8). Many people, according to Alfie Kohn, author
of What to Look for in a Classroom...and Other Essays most people associate uniforms with, "the
good ole days [when uniforms] symbolized [. . .] obedience." Uniforms were a sign of respect,
children respected their elders and presented themselves well while wearing them. As stated by
Anderson in "School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies," "[t]he first public school known to have
adopted uniforms was Cherry Hill Elementary in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1987. In 1994, Long
Beach (CA) Unified School District (LBUSD) was the first school district to adopt a districtwide
uniform dress code policy" (par 11). During the Clinton administration the talk of school dress
codes and uniforms in public schools first surfaced after his State of the Union Address in 1996.
Since Clinton's speech, schools all around the country have revised and implemented new dress code
policies.
