Homeschooling is not a new concept to the United States, and for many centuries it was the only
way for children to get an education. Many of our founding fathers were homeschooled, proving
there is nothing wrong with homeschooling, and to this day it continues to provide children with an
adequate education. Many parents believe that public school is satisfactory. However, they feel that
homeschooling is a better option because it provides a safer environment for their children and more

Town leaders were instructed to watch over their neighbors, and if children were persistently
neglected an education, they were to be removed from their homes. In 1647, the General Court of
Massachusetts passed a more comprehensive law requiring all towns to provide a school to teach
children. The schools were located around the town so as no children had to travel more than one
to two miles to attend school. During that time, a public school did not necessarily mean free. Some
students were required to pay part of the cost by paying tuition, providing wood for the school, or
lodging for the schoolmaster.
Between 1867 and 1918 all states had passed compulsory school attendance laws. By the 1920's,
there were two significant Supreme Court decisions that curtailed the influence of compulsory
attendance and would help to legalize the modern home school movement years later (Gatto 2001).
In 1923, the Court ruled in Myer vs. Nebraska case that the state's right over education is not
absolute and in 1925 the Court, in Pierce vs. Society of Sisters, said Oregon parents could not be
denied their own schools to teach their children (Gatto 2001). By the late 1960's, the rise of the
hippie culture brought back the concept of homeschooling. Hippies rebelled against everything and

A tremendous decision a parent or guardian has to make once their child is of age is whether to
put him or her in a public school or school them at home. Homeschooling is slowly growing in the
US "from nealy nonexistent in the 1970s to roughly two million students in grades K to 12 by
2009" (Ray, Brian D). Home education has it's pros and cons, but for me, and a lot of others, the
things that homeschooled students are missing out on are sufficiently outweighing the benefits.
Having been homeschooled kindergarten through seventh grade, and going to public school eighth
through twelfth, I have a pretty good perspective on both and the dynamic difference between them.
Homeschoolers are missing out on the social part of education. I, as a student, enjoyed the switch to
public school solely because the number of friendships I formed with classmates increased rapidly.
Homeschooling a kid can take away from memories that are so valuable to him or her growing up.
More importantly, Homeschooling can be expensive for parents. Not just money but time too. The
cost of books and curriculum all come from the parents wallet. For parents, having a full time job can
make the challenging task of homeschooling essentially impossible. To make the process that much
harder, parents have to deal with constant interrogation as to why they are homeschooling. "Studies
suggest that families have to justify it to family members, repeatedly." (English, Rebecca).
There is a good reason that only 3.4% of the entire school population in the U.S. is homeschooled.
(Smith, Michael). That reason is the overbearing workload that is brought about to parents that
choose the home education route for their kids.
So why do parents burden themselves with the headache of homeschooling? "When the topic comes
up in conversation, people often cite studies showing that homeschoolers score higher on
standardized tests" (Dewar, Gwen). Yet most often the reasons for homeschooling their kid wasn't
even for educational purposes, but instead to "transmit the values, beliefs, and worldview of the
parents rather than those of a public school system" (Ray, Brian). A huge benefit for parents is

Putting kids into homeschooling is not an easy task for parents to take care of. Parents would have
to make sure that their kid is receiving the right education he/she needs. "The parents also may have
to file paperwork with the state to explain who is teaching the kid and which subjects are being
covered" ("Homeschooling"). For the traditional way of schooling teachers, counselors, principals
are mostly in charge of kids education, but when it comes to homeschooling, parents and the tutor are
in charge of their kid's school. "In fact, more than one million students do it" ("Homeschooling").
According to the quote, that is an unexpectedly big number showing how many kids are
homeschooled nowadays.
There are many reasons why parents choose to homeschool their kids. Few of these reasons are to
provide their kids with a higher quality education, to support a learning disabled child and to make
their kid's schedule work with the school if the kids are athletes, actor/actress and so on.
First is to provide kids with a higher quality education. "Kids who are homeschooled may benefit
from the one–on–one attention. For instance, if you don't understand something in math, the whole
class won't be moving on without you" ("Homeschooling"). According to the quote, It is true that
kids this way understand what they're learning more because it's easier to ask questions in front of
one audience which is the tutor. They learn it until they understand everything steps by step because
they're the whole class and they learn at their own pace. Therefore, they receive a higher quality

Second, to support a learning disabled child who has difficulty learning with other kids. Public
schools have a challenging time working with kids who battle learning disabilities, leaving them to
feel left out, confused and with low self–esteem. In Order to avoid their kids from this problems,
parents choose to homeschool for their child. "When the weight of discouragement and struggle is
lifted, one of the first things we see is a change in how kids see themselves" (Parnell, Jessica).

creates issues for their families and future education. Homeschooled students do not get a
conventional high school experience, and they miss out having a sense of school pride and social

1960's, a large amount of Christens had started to become paranoid about the secularization in the
public schooling system. Due to the discourage and outlawing of prayer in school, religious families
saw homeschooling as an alternative to giving their children an education while also keeping them
from losing their personal values. For these people, homeschooling was the only option they had

Homeschooling has been around a very long time. It has never been a new thing, it just hasn't been
as popular as it used to be (Lines, p. 76). With this topic meaning so much to groups for and against
the right for homeschooling and what should be legalized or not, the debate still rages on from local
to even national government entities. Both sides of the argument have valid points to be had, but it
is ultimately the choice for the parents. There have been many different ways to educate children
that the decision is difficult for the parents and their children. Although some educators may criticize
the homeschool process by citing a lack of socialization as a problem, parents should consider
homeschooling because it is economically beneficial, it allows for flexibility and customization of
curriculum, and enables students to master concepts at their own pace.
First off, people don't really know what homeschooling is to begin with. Simple reason is that it has

ВЁHomeschooling is a middle ground for parents who do not want their children in public school,
but do not want to or cannot pay the price of private or charter schoolsВЁ (The City Writes). There
are approximately 2.2 million students in the U.S. that are being homeschooled, of that number only
a handful of them go to college. Homeschooling was originally for students with disabilities, but is
no longer used solely for that purpose. Although homeschooling may be central to a busy child's life,
it should be eliminated because it minimizes the range of information in daily lessons, strains
relationships between students and teachers, and eradicates social skills.

Homeschooling was first introduced in the 1972. In a case Supreme Court case Wisconsin vs.
Yoder they fought over the fact that public schools were violating their religious beliefs. The court
decided to rule in favor of religious freedom, instead of favoring the states who wanted to require

Homeschooling Many families are taking their children out of public and private school's classroom
to move the classroom to their homes. In both articles, the parents have different reasons for why
they are choosing to homeschool instead of keeping their children in public or private schools.
Homeschooling is not for everyone and cannot be taken lightly. There are many different reasons
why families would rather homeschool instead of sending their children to public schools. According

There is a process that the parents will need to go through if they do decide to homeschool. Parents
should do their research to make sure they are able and prepared to homeschool their children. Each
state has their requirements for homeschooling, and most families pay for the studies themselves. In
certain areas, enrollment in a state–based program is optional. If that is the case, "then the state pays
for specific resources in exchange for the homeschool meeting certain requirements to remain in the
