Prior to 1973, abortion was legal in some of the 50 United States, usually with restrictions. In 1973,
in its Roe v. Wade decision, the United States Supreme Court, ruled that a woman has a right to an
abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, the states still have the power to regulate
abortion during the second trimester and prohibit it during the third trimester. Since that time,
abortion has become one of the most controversial and divisive issues within society. In David
Foster Wallace's short story, "Good People" a young Christian couple experience an unexpected
pregnancy and contemplates the morality of having the child out of wedlock versus aborting the
child. Lane and Sherri's religious values restrict them from seeking advice from other "good
people." How does Wallace's "Good People" reflect political controversy and the obvious question
what defines good people? This is a very touchy subject in today's news cycle and when
researching I found a lot of unfitting information for my specific question, but because this is
such a relevant topic I felt it was important to ask the question and how this specific story can alter
the opinions of "good people." I wanted to find different Christian perspectives because the two

If you asked a random person on the street "what is a good person?" or "what is the good life?"
you would likely receive a different answer from everyone. These answers would be different
because everyone has their own ideas and opinions of what the answers should be. For many, a

The short story is set at a park by a lake. "They were up on a picnic table at that park by the lake,
by the edge of the lake, with part of a downed tree in the shallows half hidden by the bank."1 The
downed tree sets the mood to be sad and dark. We also learn that the main characters Lane A.
Dean, Jr. and his girlfriend Sheri Fisher are sitting very still on the picnic table2, which tells us that
the atmosphere is quite intense. It does not say for how long they sit by the lake, but it says that the
right sides of their faces get shaded so it can be assumed that they sit there for a while.3

It is a third person narrative. The narrator has an obvious focus on Lane and this we see because
the narrator only includes Lane's thoughts and feelings a lot: "Sometimes when alone and thinking
or struggling to turn matter over to Jesus Christ in prayer, he would find himself (...)"11 "He could
almost visualize himself tiptoeing past something explosive."12 Therefore the narrator has an inner
view of Lane. We learn his opinions, and especially when Sheri is described – you learn that it is
through Lane that she is described. The effect of the inner view is that we only learn how one of the
main characters is feeling and is thinking. It also makes the information about Sheri subjective
because it is Lane's opinion about her and not her exact thoughts or feelings. We only have Lane's
opinion and actions and Sheri's actions. Furthermore the short story is written in the past tense, and
there are some flashbacks: "Two days before (...)"13 "Sometimes when they had prayed (...)"14 The
flashbacks can enlighten the reader about the main characters background, but also confuse the
reader.
The short story consists of both short sentences and long sentences. The sentences are short when
something dramatic happens and the short sentences make it more dramatic and interesting to read

The first book I read in English class this year was The World According to Garp, a book known
for its forward thinking and provocative material. During a conversation in class, a question arose
about Garp, Jenny, and the other main characters: are they good people? Writers often portray main
characters as flawed, yet ultimately ethnically good human beings; however Garp and Co constantly
walk a moral line. My conclusion: no, they were not good people, but they weren't horrible people
either.
If I were to ask people on the street if they considered themselves to be a good person, I am almost
positive most people would say yes. Nevertheless, the fact remains that statistically people are

Good can be thought of as situations in which one is found to have more pleasure in his/her life
due to the occurrence of that specific event. One can receive more pleasure in life by getting a

Final Paper: What is a good person? What is a good person? This is perhaps a question that can
be answered in many ways and by many different opinions. A good person is defined differently
by everyone. I chose this subject because I am very interested in knowing how people would
define "a good person." Many people are not necessarily concerned with their behaviors. Our
