Matilda Movie Analysis
The film Matilda, created by Raold Dahl, tells the story of a gifted young lady named Matilda
Wormwood, played by Mara Wilson, who was born into a very unaccepting and unsupportive
community. She began her life in a very close–minded family. Her family did not support her thirst
for knowledge and learning but rather were constantly pressuring her to be more like them; dishonest
and unmotivated. When Matilda was of school age, she was overwhelmed with excitement at the
prospect of beginning school until she met Agatha Trunchbull, the school's principal. Even from
their first meeting, their relationship was a difficult one and this tension tainted Matilda's school
experience. As Matilda continued to grow and learn, she realized that her power of telekinesis could
be used to negate the effects of Mrs. Trunchbull's behaviour on both herself and all of her friends.
Throughout the movie, Matilda continues to realize the power within her and the love she has for
learning. This film analysis will be reflecting on three different developmental lenses including John
Bowlby's attachment theory, Lev Vygotsky's zone of proximal development andJean Piaget's stages
of cognitive development and considering how each of these lenses relate to the film Matilda.
Attachment is a deep and enduring emotional bond that connects one person to another across time
and space (Bowlby, 1969). John Bowlby is a famous psychologist who is known for his interest in
child development and for his pioneering work in coining the attachment theory alongside Mary
Ainsworth. Bowlby and Ainsworth characterizes attachment by specific behaviors of children, such
as needing to have that individual close to them when they are feeling upset or threatened. He further
explains that attachment in adults towards children includes responding sensitively and
appropriately to a child's needs. Throughout the film, it is evident that Matilda and Miss Honey have
a strong attachment to one another and how beneficial this attachment is to them both. As shown in
the film, Miss Honey is an adult that Matilda can rely on and share her passions and interests. As

Rhetorical Analysis Of Malala Yousafzai's Speech
Malala Yousafzai speaks out after she was shot by the Taliban on the left side of her head for
attending school. She then decided to recount the event and write a speech which she presented to
the United Nations. Her speech was intended to bring awareness to people that education should be
available to males and females.
Repetition specifically anaphora, was the rhetorical strategy most prominently used in the speech.
Yousafzai repeats "we" as shown in her speech, "We call upon all governments to ensure free
compulsory education for every child all over the world... We call upon all communities to be
tolerant – to reject prejudice based on cast, creed, sect, religion or gender. To ensure freedom and
equality for women so that they can flourish. We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.
We call upon our sisters around the world to be brave – to embrace the strength within themselves
and realise their full potential".
Yousafzai repeats the word "we" in the beginning of each sentence, which proves anaphora, a type of
repetition, is used especially to emphasize unity.
The above quote expresses a form of unity amongst the audience because it states "we". It evokes
a feeling of pride in being part of a group in support of education. Everyone must be aware of what
is going on and how we must rely on each others different abilities while using our own to stand up
for what is right, providing a safe education for women. By coming together we can create equality,
nobody should be discriminated.
Yousafzai may have chosen this particular strategy as opposed to another because it get the point
across that everyone must come together from leaders, the communities, and the women. People
especially women must stand up for what they believe in and know that they have the strength and
ability to do so. Together we must fight for equality.
While not as prominent as repetition, Yousafzai's use of pathos impacts the speech as well. "There
are hundreds of Human rights activists and social workers who are not only speaking for human
rights, but who are struggling to achieve their goals of education, peace and equality. Thousands of

Damien Chazelle's critically acclaimed American drama film Whiplash (2014), presents a
thought–provoking and confronting depiction of volatile and manipulative relationships, in which
Andrew Niemen, a young ambitious jazz drummer is pushed to the brink of his ability and sanity by
his ruthless teacher, Terence Fletcher. Nieman's passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into an

However, now Neiman's gradual spiral into an obsession for greatness has driven him to breaking
point. The car crash scene is the turning point in Nieman's character. His pursuit of perfection and
greatness has blinded him. At this point Neiman has lost his old self completely, his dialogue is
arrogant and hostile, he no longer cares for his band members or anything apart from greatness.
His gradual change of behaviour is evident through his dialogue 1:03:28 when Nieman is on the
telephone to one of his band members, he starts cursing and using profane language, similarly to
Fletcher. Drumming has become his life, he is no longer concentrated on being a good person
instead he is focused on being remembered, as demonstrated after the car accident, Nieman is
determined to succeed and please Fletcher, thus continuing to play. As he plays every excruciating
beat, his blood drips onto the drum set; representing the pain that he is willing to go to achieve
success. Neiman's madness is stopped by Fletcher's two words: "You're done". Along with lighting
and dialogue, the volatile and manipulative relationship between Fletcher and Nieman is explored
through Chazelles use of cinematography.

The film "The Help" (2011), is a story based on the daily lives of prominent white women and the
relationships with their African–American housemaids in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s
Civil Rights movement in America. A well–to–do white woman and central character in this film,
Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, aspires to be a journalist and decides to write and publish an exposГ©
of the stories of the housemaids in Jackson to achieve this goal, however, only two maids, Aibileen
Clark and Minny Jackson are willing to discuss their experiences with her. The other maid's in
Jackson resist telling Skeeter their stories, fearing the punishments they would endure if the
authorities were to find out. In spite of this, after the malicious arrest of one of their befriended
maids, all of the maids begin to share their experiences, which consist of racial hostility and being
treated as intrinsically subservient to white people. The story Skeeter publishes entitled The Help,
creates a disturbance among the white families in Jackson, by exposing the racism the maids are
faced with, forcing the white families to reflect upon how they have treated their maids. The
storyline represented in The Help exhibits examples of the primordial approach to race and ethnicity,

Analysis Of The Book ' Wonder '
The book "Wonder" written by R.J. Palacio follows a young boy named August Pullman and his
struggles in fifth grade. The struggle of being the only kid who looks the way he does. The
struggle of being the only kid at his school who has Treacher Collins Syndrome. Even with all the
obstacles in his path, August's overall experience at Beecher Prep has had a positive impact on
his life. Not only does August have to deal with bullies because of his facial abnormalities, but he
also has to adjust to a "real" school. August was always homeschooled due to his 27 surgeries. No

And boy will I tell you Julian deserved it. With all the stuff Julian puts Auggie through Julian
deserved worse. On page 267 Amos stood up for Auggie by saying, " Leave him alone dude." It was
really strange for Amos to do this since he was on Julian's side for awhile.
Near the end of the book Auggie feels accepted. On page 282 we find evidence of this when he
says, "It was like I was one of them." When he says "them" he is referring to the other students.
Auggie could finally feel "normal" and it is necessary for August to feel this way because people
have always seen Auggie as strange because of his face. At a point August even forgets he has
Treacher Collins syndrome. On page 307 we find an example of this, "I wasn't even thinking about
my face. I was just smiling a big happy smile." August felt like it didn 't matter what his face
looked like. It just mattered that he was happy. For once, Auggie didn 't feel like everyone was
trying to get away from him; on the contrary, he said, "It kind of felt like everyone wanted to get
close to me." (pg 308) August can finally feel like a "normal" kid.
Some may argue that Auggie's experience had a negative impact because of the bullies, but in the
end he had everyone on his side. Plus with the conditions there will always be people who give you
those long stares, or those people who do that look then look away

Picture Books Importance on a Child's Development Ever analyzed a picture book before? The
colors, shapes, and underlying message on every inch of the page create a story. A story that
makes your brain tick and contemplate what exactly you're looking at. These things are significant
to the constant development of a human being, but the specifically to a child. When I was young I
would drown my floor with Dr. Seuss and books that gave excitement to me just by holding them. I
loved looking at the pictures, the endless rhymes, and magical color schemes because I had no other

On TV you only see what the media wants you to, but with books the possibilities are boundless
leaving you to take the story for what it's worth and run with it, all the while drawing your own
conclusions. For example, in my house, I would read books and then dart to my parents telling them
about what I just read and what it meant to me, or even how I saw the characters in my own mind. It's
amazing the things you can find out about yourself when you think and create on your own
instead of having someone do it for you. I appreciate those who gave me books, read to me out
loud, or handed me pens to doodle with because if I wasn't given the opportunities to explore I
probably wouldn't be the same person today. Even a kindergartener deserves that type of freedom
and I feel picture books are a great outlet for it. So you see, pictures, even in books help minds to
develop each time you take a glance at them. You gain that freedom in your mind and can grow
and expand to photography, galleries, museums, and even creations of your own personal art... the
possibilities seem endless. I would conclude that picture books are helpful to people of all ages,

Survey Analysis
The results of the survey were put analyzed and the results shown in graphs and charts displayed
above. These graphs and charts were picked specifically because they stood out as significant
results which may support my hypothesis. The students surveyed were mostly females with 60% of
the respondents identifying as female (Chart 1). This statistic stood out because it is similar to the
percentage of females in the university in 2017 which according to the WCU Office of Institutional
Research is 60.3%. The percentage of male respondents in the survey however was 35% which is
way below what the research office reported, at 39.7%. I must include that there were 5% of

This was further evident in the answers to the questions about respondents' feelings on Native
Americans. In Graph 1, we see that between 50–75% of respondents answered no when asked if they
feel strongly about Native American culture, history or current conditions. This statistic could
explain for why a majority of respondents hold unfavorable opinions on Native Americans. The
majors of respondents were considered in an effort to locate any link between the majors people
take and the information they hold. The majors differed across the board but as shown in Chart 3,
45% of respondents were from the college of Medicine. The next disciplines reported were Liberal
Arts and Business at 30% and 25% respectively. This showed the prevalence of many different
majors which did not prove to be significant influence on opinions. The open ended questions yielded
some interesting results. Most of the participants reported the media or media sources as mediums
through which they receive their information. Only two participants wrote down a school or the
education system as the medium for their knowledge.
There were not many problems obtaining data for this survey. The only major problem encountered,
was that people did not want to partake in the survey. This was due to a couple factors like the

Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical
procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not
allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for
simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread.
My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing
because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer.

I can write a thesis that will give an overview about what main topic of the paper is and what other
elements will be addressed in the paper. From taking this course I have been able to improve
many of my weaknesses, but there are still some that I need to work on. Overall I am becoming
better at not procrastinating as much as I used to. This class has helped me to learn to take the
little steps along the way because then there will not be as much work to do towards the end.
This has also made me realize that the final product of my writing will turn out better because it
will have had more time to develop, which means that there would have been more opportunities
to proofread. I think by learning many styles of writing, such as paraphrasing, summarizing,
analyzing, and researching; it has enabled me to be able to write more broadly. By knowing how
to correctly use all of these kinds of writing styles, it will help me in the future for other classes
because I will have the knowledge that I need to write these types of papers. I still procrastinate
sometimes, but not as much as I used to. I will be able to improve on this as time goes along
because I will become more motivated by seeing the end result, which usually would be better
grades.
Overall I think that my most of my writing habits have improved and for the ones that have not I
