                         The Use of Media in Language Teaching

       As an English teacher, we must be sensitive on student’s need in the learning and
teaching process to get mastery learning perfectly. Students can be active and more interest to
learn when teacher explains materials well and it works by using media.

       Sometimes many teachers assume that media is hard to prepare, waste time, and
expensive so explain an object without any media. The teacher like this make students lack of
experiences and get the explanation unclearly.

       Media is a tool which helps teacher to make the material be clear, real, and stimulate
them to learn effectively. The teacher must make sure that the media is appropriate and
represent an object which will explain.

       The media can be found in the classroom, hand-made, or teacher can buy it.

       The diagram above shows that media in the classroom separated into two parts are
technical media and non-technical media.

       The first is technical media; it can be prepared before the class starts for example:
record player, multimedia lab, computer, and others. With reference to schema theory about
technical media (Schank and Abelson1977), which proposes that we approach new
information by scanning our memory banks for related knowledge, media can help students
call up existing schemata and therefore maximize their use of prior background knowledge in
the language learning process. The students can absorb and listen to teacher carefully so it
helps to make material save in long term memory.

       Second is non-technical media; it can be found surrounding the class or easy to
prepare for example: whiteboard, flashcards, wall-charts, and others.

       Teachers can also create their own media according with the characteristics of an
object to be described. It shows that teachers are required to be creative and innovative.

       All at all, using media in teaching especially in language teaching is important. It
makes teacher teach the students well and easily to understand. Then students get the material
adequately to get best result in the learning and teaching process.
