Lesson 1 (Geography)
Our Environment
What is Environment
Environment is the place, people,
things and nature that surround any
living organism. It is our basic life
support system. It provides the air we
breath, the water we drink, the food
we eat and the land where we live. It
is a combination of natural & human
made phenomena.
Components of Environment
Components of Environment
Natural Environment
• The natural environment
refers to both Biotic(plants
and animals) and A biotic
conditions existing on the
earth. Its consists of
Lithosphere, Hydrosphere,
Atmosphere and Biosphere.
Human Environment
• The human
environment refers to
the activities, creation
and interactions among
human beings
Natural Environment
The natural environment
has four domains namely
Lithosphere, Hydrosphere,
Atmosphere and
Biosphere.
Lithosphere
It is the solid crust or
the hard top layer of
the earth. It is made up
of rocks & minerals & is
covered wit soil. It has
various landforms such
as mountains, plateaus,
plains etc. It provides us
land, forests, grasslands
& minerals.
Hydrosphere
The domain of water
is known as
hydrosphere. It
comprises of various
sources of water
rivers, lakes, seas,
ocean etc. It is very
essential for all living
organisms.
Atmosphere
It is the thin layer
of air that surrounds
the earth. It protects
us from the harmful
rays & scorching
heat of the sun. It
consists of number
of gases, dust &
water vapours.
Biosphere
Plant & animal
kingdom together
make the Biosphere
or the living world. It
is the narrow zone of
the earth where
land, water and air
interact with each
other to support life.
Ecosystem
All plants, animals &
human beings depend
on their immediate
surroundings and are
interdependent on each
other. This relationship
between the living
organisms, as well as
the relation between
organism and their
surroundings form an
Ecosystem.
A Pond Ecosystem
Human Environment
Human beings interact with the
environment and modify it according to
their needs. Since time immemorial humans
are modifying the natural environment.
They have build dams cross rivers, factories
roads etc. but a perfect balance is necessary
between the human & natural
environment. We must learn to live and use
our environment in a harmonious way.
Thank You
