Speaker: Dr Debbie Holley, Associate Professor, Centre for Excellence in Learning, Bournemouth University Dr Philip Howlett. Principal Lecturer, Anglia Ruskin University Dr Nick Rudman, Headteacher, Maylandsea Primary School Session Title: "Capturing the voice of the child: a co-design approach to developing calmer classrooms" Session Description: 30 minutes The 'voice of the child' is lacking within traditional literature framing classroom behaviour, and this project set out to develop a set of resources to assist trainee teachers to view their classes from the perspective of the child. The class of 11 year old children in our study developed, planned, wrote and directed video clips on their own ideas of issues that affected their learning. This presentation will cover the co-design workshop with the children, and showcase their ideas. By appreciating how children see barriers to their own learning, trainee teachers can develop insights into their own practice. This session focuses on the Digital Access aspects of Digital Citizenship, as co-design workshops aim to give all participants a voice, and this session encompasses the challenge and opportunities of working with a diverse set of participants.

Open education takes the spirit of sharing, creativity, and transparency and leverages those with the flattening capabilities of the Internet, the portability of mobile computing, and the wider freedoms of flexible copyright to improve accessibility, enrich content, and foster creative collaboration. Come hear one educator’s experiences with open education and why he believes that librarians are integral to the success of this grand project. There will be generous time for questions.

MOOCs have been described as having the potential to make education much more accessible to many who previously could not afford it. However, the production costs that have been reported in the past have led many to suggest that they cannot be financially sustainable (Hollands and Devayani, 2014). If so, MOOCs will not emerge in topics with more narrow appeal such as in specialized topics or in minority languages (Woruba and Abedin, 2015). This presentation will give an overview of the Erasmus+ funded Locomotion Project which between 2015 and 2017 built and delivered the MOOCs4all MOOC; “Making MOOCs on a Budget”, to disseminate techniques on how to cheaply build an open course. It will also discuss the relatively modest uptake of the MOOC and barriers, other than cost, inhibiting the creation of MOOCs and invite contributions from the audience on how these can be overcome.

For those institutions who have been specialising in distance education for some time, although they may have had to make some changes, the last few months have not been overly problematic. But for the remaining majority of institutions, there has been a monumental upheaval in how they are now required to conduct business, both for staff and students. Those who have fared better seem to be those who have reasonably mature frameworks in place to mediate their technology-enabled learning (TEL) offerings. That is, they have well established processes that define how they translate what they have in policy, procedures and planning into practice. Such a framework can be found within the COL TEL Benchmarks, that can provide an institution with clear guidelines as to what things need to be in place to ensure a robust and consistent approach to teaching with technology. This presentation will first highlight many of the lessons currently being learned across the higher education sector, it will also ask you to share what you have learned and then we will look at how some of these issues are contained within the COL TEL Benchmarks. Lastly it will make a case for investigating more fully how to use this tool to help your institution ready itself for success in the future.

A keynote presentation for the Online Teaching Pathways for Early-Career Criminologists & Sociologists by University of Glasgow, Hong Kong University, U21. Abstract: We have all had to pivot rapidly from teaching face-to face to teaching fully online and have learned many lessons along the way, in a particularly short space of time. In many cases, if our IT groups and vendors had not equally risen to the occasion this would not have been possible. However, what has been observed is that those who have fared better over these recent months have been those institutions with well-established frameworks in place to mediate their technology-enhanced learning (TEL). That is, they have recognised processes that define how they translate what is in policy, procedures and planning into practice with appropriate IT scaffolding. Such a framework can be found within a number of TEL quality tools, that are designed to provide an institution with clear guidelines as to what things need to be in place to facilitate a robust and consistent approach to teaching with technology. Once these things are in place it makes it possible to undertake online teaching that does more than just mimic face-to-face practice, but actually provide a the foundation for innovative pedagogies to thrive. One concept associated with this is the notion that students can be productive and typically, this means the TEL has, or can become far more, active, authentic and collaborative.

Reflecting on what has happened to Higher Education in 2020 in Australia, in responding to the pandemic, may seem a bit premature to some. But on the other hand, we need to learn these lessons quickly as there are no guarantees moving forward. Thankfully many of us have had reasonably robust technology enhanced learning environments to fall back onto. But let’s face it, this hasn’t always been elegant as it could be. So, reflecting on some of the things we have learned in 2020, it is worth distilling some thoughts as we move in to 2021, particularly around TEL and the funding environment for HE. Let's do a SWOT and see what others think too.

Many of the UK’s biggest brands understand that accessible websites and apps are good for business, but too many people treat it as a bolt-on – As well as facing legal threats organisations could be missing out on a market that is estimated at £250bn. In this recent webinar participants heard from AbilityNet, our Accessibility Partner, as they laid out the business case for making sure that your website and apps can be used by every customer. The session was delivered by Robin Christopherson MBE, who has been a global expert in accessibility for 20 years and regularly speaks at international tech events. He used examples to show how inclusive design can boost revenue, deliver financial savings, improve your brand and reduce legal risks. He’ll also explained how accessible apps and websites can improve the experience for every single one of your mobile users – whether they have a disability or not. He was also joined by his colleague Mark Walker. Mark AbilityNet’s Head of Marketing and Communications and has been involved in digital inclusion for 25 years. The webinar consists of a 30-minute presentation followed by a 20 minute interactive Q&A.
