 Tell must be used with a direct object: she told him. Say does
not have a direct object she said. It can be used with an
indirect object she said to him
 Not only is the ‘ one tense back ‘ rule followed, but the word
order changes to that of a statement.
 If is used when there is no question word.
Change these sentences into the reported statement

Work in pairs and tell your pattern what you know about the day you were
born?
For example:
My grandmother thought that I was a girl but my grandfather was quite
sure that I was a boy .
My mum was so happy that she forgot the name which my parents wanted
to call me.
Today we read CHAPTER1- I WAS BORN from the story “ David Copperfield
so work in groups and try to write down some information about CHARLES
DICKENS- the writer- .
Born in 1812- died in 1870
One of the greatest novelists of Victorian England
Best known novels: David Copperfield, Olive Twist, etc
Be unusual for his time because of writing about social injustice
Be able to describe people in very comical and colorful ways
1. Betsey Trotwood: forceful, confident, strong, impatient, bossy, insensitive, severe.
Mrs Copperfield: shy, frightened, weak, miserable, flustered, meek
2. “Posthumous” means that David was born after the death of his father.
3. Because it is the day of David's birth.
4. This refers to the trial of giving birth. David’s mother is afraid that she will die
while having a baby.
5. Because his mother was so frightened at Betsey Trotwood's visit that she went
into labour and had the baby on that very Friday
6. Because she looks so young.
7. She is very young widow
she is about to have a baby and she thinks she might die giving birth
Betsey Trotwood is a frightening character
8. She is absolutely that the baby will be a girl.
Work in groups to discuss these questions:
1. What “ mistake in life” might have happened to Miss Betsey Trotwood?
2. What do you think will happen next?
Suggested answers:
1. Betsey Trotwood wants the baby to be a girl so badly that it seems that
she has no time for boys and men. Perhaps this is because she has been
badly treated by a man. There might be a particular reason why she has
never married
2. The baby will be born and it will be a boy. David’s mother may die.
Betsey might bring up the baby etc…
========
1.She clearly thinks that he is stupid. It seems she doesn’t like men . He is very frightened of
her. She treats him very sternly
2. Betsey is talking about the baby when she asks ‘ How is she?’ . Mr Chillip thinks that
She is talking about the mother
3. No, she doesn’t because she is so angry that it is a boy
4. She hits him with her hat or bonnet because she is so furious when he explains that the
baby is the baby is the boy.
5. She is not interested in a boy baby . She is used to getting her own way , and this has not
happened.
=
Work in groups to answer the following questions:
1. What do you think of Betsey Trotwood's behavior?
2. Do you think David Copperfield ever meets his aunt?
Suggested answers
1. Betsey Trotwood's behavior is very strange and insensitive to Davis’s poor
mother. She acts like a spoilt child, who has not got her own way
2. Maybe , later in his life David lives with his aunt. And she turns out to have a
heart of gold.

What has happened? How does the writer fell about the
world now?
The poet’s loved one has died. He can not understand how
the world continues to go on . It all seams meaningless
