1. Arguments Against School Uniforms
School uniforms and dress codes are becoming a popular trend among schools. Most Students and
some parents don't agree with the enforcement with school uniforms, saying that uniforms are taking
away self–expression in schools. But, school uniforms are not a negative thing to have. Yes,
uniforms and some very strict dress codes limit what the students have to choose to wear to school
every day, but it doesn't limit them from learning which is the main reason they are in school. Some
students treat school as a fashion show, so eliminating the size of wardrobe shifts the attention
toward their school work. Although requiring students to wear school uniforms may violate their
self–expression in some ways, a uniform is supposed to be looked...show more content...
Larry Wilder, Ed. D had spent 19 years at Fresno County Office ofEducation, and currently directs
the administrative services program in the Fresno Pacific University School of Education said,
"The National School Board Association estimates that approximately 135,000 guns are brought to
America's 85,000 public schools each day." This clearly states that there is a serious problem with
students bringing guns to school. If school uniforms are implemented, these numbers are certain to
go down. For example, the Long Beach Unified School District to require uniforms and in the first
year of having them, there was a 50% decline in fights and cases of students with weapons. Other
schools have dress codes that require the beltline to be exposed at all times for fear of a weapon in
the waistband. Educators say that because of that policy, there was a decrease in violence, fights in
schools and improved student achievement. School is meant to a healthy learning environment and
by decreasing violence, with the use of uniforms and dress codes, schools are starting to become
better learning environments.
Requiring school uniforms eliminates the chances of bullying. Bullies usually pick on kids based
on what they wear. With the use of uniforms, everyone will be wearing the same clothes, not
allowing the bullies to pick people out by their choice of clothing. Even those making fun of others
would be wearing the same clothes as

2. Uniform Policies in Schools Essay
Whether or not school uniforms should be required by schools has been debated for quite some
time. School uniforms would be vastly helpful to both schools and students. School uniforms would
bring students closer together and decrease trend based distractions and bullying. The debate over
uniforms in public schools is a much larger issue than simply what children should wear to school. It
touches on issues of school and overall grade improvement, freedom of expression, and the "culture
wars." Although most students and even some parents would disagree with the idea of uniforms, a
uniform policy would definitely make the student body as a whole look more presentable and should
be implemented.
Enforcement of school uniforms would create a...show more content...
pag.).
Also, uniform policies would promote a sense of equality, pride, and loyalty in students. Similar to
athletic team uniforms, dressing cohesively increases pride, unity, and a renewed school
commitment. Furthermore, a uniform policy would decrease dropout rate from bullying caused by
differences in social class since every student would be dressed the same. Safety for students is also
a major concern. In recent years, students wearing such items have been threatened, stabbed or shot
as others attempted to steal their belongings. In December 1995 in Oxon Hill, Md., a Washington,
D.C. suburb, a 17–year–old honor student, Charles Marsh, was fatally shot as he waited at a school
bus stop, caught in the cross–fire as one student tried to steal another's jacket ("School Uniforms" n.
pag.). A uniform policy would cutdown on bullying and theft caused by name brand clothing.
Uniforms would increase a students sense of belonging because no one would be outcasted for
dressing differently. Uniforms would bring students closer together without the fear of not fitting in
for dressing differently or not being able to afford expensive name brand clothing.
Uniform policies make schools much safer. In April, two gun–wielding students at Columbine High
School in Littleton, Colo., kill 12 classmates and one teacher before taking their own lives. The
violence shocks the nation, and prompts widespread calls for improved security on school campuses.

3. Argumentation, School Uniform
In a democratic society, people are free to choose what sort of dress they want, but the way we
dress ourselves greatly depends on what the situation we are in. For instance, we put on evening
suits when we present ourselves at a party of celebrities; on the field, we put on sports wear.
Therefore, in elementary and secondary school, I suggest students should put on school uniform to
give a consciousness to students that people should wear proper clothes in certain place in order to
respect others. As Gilchrish said, "clothing is a way to show others that you have respect and
consideration for the situation" (20).

As mentioned above, if parents don't want their kid be excluded from other schoolmates, they may
need to save money for their kid to buy designed clothes. In NSBA School Uniform Survey 2006,
290 parents were asked if "school uniforms a cost saver over general apparel," 81.6% said "yes" (17).
The survey demonstrates that the majority parent think school uniform does save their money.
Students and intruders can be easily identified when students are required to wear school uniform. In
school, if an intruder goes into the school, the staffs in school could distinguish he/she immediately.
On organized trips away from school, it is much easier for teachers to ensure they haven't lost
anyone. Since students can be recognized easily, it could indirectly lead students to act more
considerately. When students misbehave outside the school, people know which school the students
study in and report their behavior to school. The school may punish the students and notify their
parents. It's not what students want. So they would control their conduct outside the school when
they wear uniform. As a Brunsma described in his research on uniforms, student uniforms "decreases
behavioral problems and drug use" (53).
Uniform encourages students to have a sense of belonging and of being part of a community. Every
morning students wear their uniform, it evokes them to think of their school

4. School Uniform Is Good Or Bad?
SCHOOL UNIFORMS
The school uniform is good or bad? This is a question debated in many schools. School uniforms
have many advantages and disadvantages; it depends on the thought and opinion of each person.
Some people think that school uniforms display the discipline, obedience of students and it helps
students can save time in choosing the outfit every day; it helps poor students have equality with
everyone in school; it helps students be distinct from other people and it makes students feel proud
of their school. Some people think that school uniforms are not good because it make them feel
uncomfortable, they do not want to see other students wear the same clothes with them; it prevents
individual personality and creativity, lack of originality and expression of each student. In my
opinion, wearing school uniform is good for students.
School uniforms display the discipline and obedience. It helps students a polite appearance and
courteous behavior with which students need. At the same time, this is also a way to avoid having
students dress inconsistently with the school environment. Not only have that, school uniform also a
tool to help schools manage students better. School uniform will help remind obligations and
responsibilities of students. Therefore, when students see the uniform, they will try to study hard and
do not an argument with the teacher or other students in the class. Previously, most of the private
schools require school uniform, but currently some public

5. Students Should Wear Uniforms Debate Essay
For years, there have been hundreds of debates about whether students should wear uniforms or not.
Many schools agreed with the idea and have already required school uniforms, while others are still
considering it. Some say that school uniforms represent discipline and instill school pride, but others
think that it is not creativity and comfortable. Despite that there are still arguments about it; school
uniforms have increasingly demonstrated their importance and influence in many ways. Students
should have to wear uniforms because it will help students to perform better at school, give students
a sense of discipline, lower the cost for parents, and decrease the rate of crime. Students who do not

While wearing uniforms, students have to obey and follow the rules, so they will learn how to
respect others. An article reports "Teachers and principals often report that discipline problems
are reduces in schools that implements a standardized dress program." (School Uniforms). In
addition, wearing school uniforms is a step of preparation for professional life. When you have a
job, you will have to wear uniforms. Whether you are a doctor or a nurse, you are in the same
position. School uniforms also help students to realize that they are a part of a group, so they feel
liked they belong and learn to take responsibility for whatever they do. Next, school uniforms will
encourage the learning environment. If school does not require uniforms, it will take more time for
students to decide what to wear for the next day. They will have to think so much about clothing,
shoes, or hair. Therefore, they cannot use that valuable time to concentrate more on their studies and
others activities. Uniforms remind them that they are still students and the biggest goal is to learn.
This will motivate them to try their best to achieve the goal. When I was in Vietnam, all students
were required to wear uniforms, and students were fine with it. They did not find any inconvenience
or think that it prevented them from expressing themselves, because they understood that it would
benefit them in different ways. In the

6. School Uniforms, Good Or Bad? Essay
I assume that my readers will be students and parents who don't agree with school uniforms. They
will immediately reject them because to them these uniforms restrict the student 's' freedom of
expression. After picking this topic. I wanted to take the negative of it because I want to freely
choose the clothes that I want to wear. I didn't want someone to choose the clothes that I'm going to
wear. After, a while of researching this topic, I decided to take the positive side of schooluniforms.
In fact, these uniforms will help students become more focus in their school work instead of what
they 're wearing, because they don't have to worry to fit in with the cool crowd or have to worry if
their clothes match. I will try to convince these students and parents that school uniforms have a
positive impact. I will give bits of information about the history of school uniforms, and give them
some results that will shock them about the impact of school uniforms.
School Uniforms, good or bad? What do you think of when seeing a bunch of kids in school

develop school uniforms. The first record of school uniforms were in England in 1222. Students at

School uniforms Whether you 're for them or against them, this hot debate refuses to go away. It 's
a great idea for school to have uniform because with uniform student can get the benefit of school.
This can also bring out the positive impact of school dress code. Uniform is required because it
bring out promotion for school safety. But there are others that don 't think school you uniforms is
required in public schools. Because of anti– individual 's of freedom. Adding to that wearing school
uniform bring an Infringement on Students ' Rights. The first argument for school uniforms is that
wearing school uniforms bring out a positive impact of school dress code. According to what
Woodard write "that a high school principal in Johnston County the student 's ' demeanor is better
and there are fewer disruptions because of teasing or students being uncomfortable because of
the apparel that others are wearing" This is a great example because some kids may not have as
much clothes as other kids have and when they come to school with the same rip pants or shirt is
most likely to be one of a bully target. Uniform takes away kids wearing the same clothes everyday
but with the dress code nobody can tell you that you wearing the same clothes because it is
mandatory to wear dress code to school. Therefore student doesn 't have to worry about getting
bullied on what they wear to school.

The Debate Over School Uniforms
Context
In some countries, e.g. Britain and many Caribbean states, it is common for school pupils to have to
wear distinctive uniforms identifying them with a particular institution, especially to the end of
compulsory education at 16. In others, e.g. France, the USA, it is rare for uniforms to be worn,
although some private schools may retain them. In both situations the desirability of school uniforms
remains controversial among students, parents and educationalists. As a result of this some schools
have abandoned uniform at the same time as others have adopted it.

Pupils without expensive designer clothes and trainers may be singled out as social outcasts, or
stigmatised as being from poor backgrounds. For these reasons many parents prefer uniforms as they

cons Students always find ways to tease or bully others, regardless of what clothes are worn. Those
who wish to be particularly fashionable will want to own the same number of outfits regardless of
whether they are allowed to wear them to school or not, changing into them the minute that classes
are over. Parents often find some uniform items, e.g. jackets, very expensive compared to the rest of
their child's wardrobe, and complain they can never be worn outside the school environment.
pros
Uniform has practical benefits when students are outside the school building. Being readily
identified with a particular institution may make students more aware of their behaviour while
travelling to and from the school, leading them to act more considerately, e.g. to other passengers on
buses or trains. On organised trips away from the school it is much easier for teachers to ensure they
haven't lost anyone and to monitor behaviour, than if students wore their own clothes and blended in
with the crowds.

9. School Uniform Controversy
School uniforms have been a topical debate amongst educators, parents and children for quite some
time now. Many folks feel that requiring uniforms in school has had a major influence and impact
on the students and on the school environment as a whole. Opponents, on the other hand, think that
the obligation of uniforms violates the right of freedom of expression for students and can be a
financial burden on lower class families. These are some of the main points from people who are
against enforcing school uniforms. So, should students truly be forced to wear uniforms to school
daily? On the surface, it seems that the uniform debate should not be as hotly debated as it truly is.
It's just clothing. But, in reality the uniform controversy has spear headed a large deliberation and
there has been much research done that has proven that schools that enforce uniform dress codes
have improved on many levels. Uniforms have been shown to improve attendance and graduation
rates, help prevent gang activity on campuses, alleviate peer pressure, and much more. Requiring
school uniforms, even at a basic level is something that should be enforced in all schools. (https:/

Commonly favored by private schools and institutions, US public schools are starting to adopt the
idea of school wide uniforms by increasing numbers. The National Center for Education Statistics
(NCES) released figures in 2014 stating the overall amount of public schools nationwide which are
now requiring school uniforms has increased from 13% during the 2003–2004 school year to 19%
during the 2011–2012 school year. (https://school–uniforms.procon.org

The first recorded practice of a school uniform was in England around the year 1200. At first,
school uniforms in the US adopted the concept of school uniforms that were originally established
in England. In the fall of 1987, US public schools in Maryland and Washington DC were the first
institutions known to establish policies regarding school wide standardized dress. Initially, these
uniform policies were voluntary, although a report made by the New York Times in December of
1987 stated that the idea of school wide

Are School Uniforms a Good or Bad Idea? School uniforms has been the cause of debate for many
years now. Most students like to wear school uniforms because they believe uniforms make schools
("safer for students") and create "level playing fields" where every student has equal opportunity to
succeed and they all apply the same set of rules. However, students and even most parents don't agree
with the enforcement with school uniforms; stating that uniforms take away the right of

However, such an argument completely ignores the fact that students with uniforms behave properly
and focus completely on their academic careers and may improve their attendance and discipline
(Elisabetta Gentile and Scott A. Imberman, 2010). For example, a 2010 study by researchers at the
University of Houston found that the average absence rate for girls in middle and high school
decreased by 7% after the introduction of uniforms. The study also found that "behavioral problems
shift[ed] towards less severe infractions (Elisabetta Gentile and Scott A. Imberman, 2010). Another
study also showed positive result that school uniform policies improve rate of attendance, graduation
and suspension (Virginia Ann Bendel Draa, 2005). So this all proves that school uniforms have
impacted in positive results, which we can ignore. The final argument stated by the opponents of
school uniforms is that school uniforms emphasizes on ("socio–economic divisions") that the school
uniforms are supposed to eliminate. They believe it will not lower the socio–economic status of the
people because rich families will stay buy their children every now and then, but the poor families
will still have one pair to in the whole school year (US Department of Education and Bureau of
Justice Statistics, 2014). On the other hand, proponents of school uniforms say that school uniform
may save money. Parents can

11. Pros And Cons Of School Uniform Debate
School Uniform Debate With each and every school year most kids cannot wait to go shopping for
new clothes. Some schools enforce that students wear uniforms while others do not enforce
uniforms. Uniforms began in Catholic schools and then spread to public schools. The thought of
kids wearing school uniforms has been a popular debate that has gone on for a while now as there
has even been court cases on the issue of student attire. Not all schools should enforce the students
to wear uniforms. Some people believe that kids' safety and academic performance are impacted
by wearing uniforms enforced by the school that they attend. School uniforms come along with
some pros and cons. School uniforms can be a hassle for parents or guardians when it comes to
cost, the students will not be able to express themselves, and, it is hard to enforce them in public
schools. A pro to uniforms is that they can help students resist the urge to fit in and, buy clothes that
are trending at that particular time. But, not all kids feel the peer pressure to buy certain clothes to
fit in. Due to cost, self–expression, and struggles with enforcement students should not be forced to
wear uniforms to school. Most kids do not have a job or are too young to work so they rely on
their parents or guardians to buy them school clothes. "Students will want nice clothes for after
school activities, so that will lead to parents feeling the urge to buy normal clothes for the kids

in our schools. Opinions are formed about the appearance of uniforms powerful effects on the way
in which a student should dress. This significant role of attire relates to how students could relay a
message to themselves and others. In addition, uniforms are one of the most serious administrative
concerns in our public school system. I strongly favor the fact that school uniforms are perfect
because they assist in helping students reach their full potential, increase social acceptance, and
enhance the focus on student achievement. One of the reasons for disagreement on this issue
involves seductive appearances that produce a particular effect on the viewer. Students play a huge
role in this topic because they have convinced school officials to pursue these issues. This subject
becomes more controversial about students who want to express themselves regarding their attire
choices, but school officials do not agree. School officials think that females would wear very
revealing blouses, and short skirts and males would wear sagging jeans and shirts with inappropriate
images or messages. They also argued that this type of attire was related to those of gang members.

controversial because they do fix some problems, but they also restrict students ' freedom of

towards me, and people picking on each other about what clothes they are wearing. The most
trouble I ever remember getting myself into was during the first or second grade when I lost one of

In 1996, President Clinton endorsed public school uniforms in his State of the Union Address. This
created a rage among some education critics across the country. Critics complain that uniforms will
lessen children's individualism and creativity, infringing students' rights and hint of racism. While
proponents believe, uniforms will put the students emphasis on schoolwork instead of dressing
coolly, and they will help to lower school violence.
The idea comes from a Californian elementary school in Long Beach. "In 1994, Long Beach became
the country's first public school district to institute a mandatory uniform policy". The results were so
promising that they lead to the President's endorsement. The school saw a fifty–one percent drop in
physical fights, a thirty–four percent drop in assaults and batteries, a fifty percent drop in weapons
offenses, and a thirty–two percent drop in school suspensions. All of this occurred in a time span of
only one year, essentially proving that a child's clothes do make a difference in school violence. In
a time when school children are getting killed for designer jackets and shoes, uniforms are exactly
what our children need.
Critics say that school uniform inhibit self expression. If you take away a child's self expression
through clothing, you force that child to express his or herself in other ways. This might even force
a child to resort to even more violent forms of expression, like through writing and art. In

not feel pressured to dress a certain way. Students feel pressured by other students when they can't

Uniform Debate: Why Uniforms Should Not Be Allowed
Should uniforms be allowed in schools? This is the heated debate that has no sign of stopping.
There is a lot of evidence for each side with different points of views from the teachers to the kids
to a developmental psychologist, but I'm going to talk about my side of this debate. This is my
report on why uniforms should not be allowed in public schools. Uniforms should not be allowed in
public schools because the cost of uniforms can cause serious financial problems, kids can't express
themselves, and it doesn't affect their learning ability, growth, or their motivation toward school.
My first reason is that if uniforms are allowed in public schools, then kids won't be able to express

They say because everyone looks alike, they won't have pressure for getting expensive clothes to fit
in and won't get bullied for their clothes, but there is no evidence that this is true. They may say that
they won't get bullied for their clothes, but it can become a competition for who looks best in the
uniform or a plus sized girl might get bullied for "not looking good enough" in the uniform. The
uniform might even increase violence. In a study, it showed that when schools went into uniforms,
most of the school's violence went up.
For the record, uniforms should not be allowed in public schools because it can cause issues in a
family with financial problems, kids can't express themselves and feel more comfortable, and most
of all, it doesn't affect things like motivation, attitudes toward schools, academic ability, and the
amount of violence in schools. I hope you liked my report!

the everyday worries of trying to fit in with other students, parents will not have to deal with the
financial stress of buying fashionable and expensive clothes, and teachers will have a better
advantage with providing a better learning environment with students more focus on their education,
rather than what their wearing to school. Trying to fit in is one issue that students deal with at

The requirements of school uniforms will help not only the students, but also the parents. Parents
can save more money buying uniforms rather than those expensive name brand clothes and shoes.
The need to be a part of the fashion society associated with peer pressure can lead to spending
money that some families can barely afford. On the other hand, some believe that uniforms are an
unnecessary expense and can cause financial problems for families. If uniforms become a financial
burden to families, there are many ways to help. According to the MPS uniform code, "if a sincerely
held religious belief, disability, medical condition, financial hardship, or other extenuating
circumstance prevents the child from being in uniform," there will be "countless assistance programs
for low–income families to help parents keep their kids up to code" (Holyoke, 2010). Uniforms will
help parents and educators teach the importance of dressing in a way that shows the student should
be taken seriously. Providing students with uniforms will not only save parents money, but also help
parents teach their kids valuable life lessons about presenting themselves in the correct way outside
of school. Teachers have a goal of teaching students focused on getting an education, and allowing

20. School Uniforms Expository Essay
Schools around the world have debated whether uniforms are important in the academic success of a
student or not. The debate comes from a place of studying how uniforms benefit or inhibit the
student's social, educational, and behavioral performance. Numerous studies show the varying sides
of the debate, including the pros and cons. The area, type of school, and parental stance is taken into
account when studying the effect of uniforms versus dress code. Uniforms are not beneficial in
schools because they prohibit individuality, diversity, and comfortability of students.
Individuality is affected when a uniform policy is enforced. Uniforms encroach upon freedom of
expression given to students by their First Amendment rights as a citizen of the United States. In the
Supreme Court ruling, Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School, freedom of expression
is protected by the Constitution unless it interferes with appropriate discipline. (Oyez) Students
should be allowed to express themselves and how they want to dress. People will express themselves
through other means, like tattoos and piercings. These are a more permanent solution for striving for
individuality instead of wearing what they want. In the University Notre Dame's Sociology
Department conducted a study on the effects of uniforms on students, they discovered that there was
no interference with "substance abuse, behavioral problems or attendance." (The Journal of
Educational Research) The research concluded that not having a uniform does not correlate with the
overall environment of the students. Individuality is what makes up the world we live in and taking
away the individuality takes away the freedom to express who you are and conform to society. The
prohibition of individuality, prohibits diversity in the school. School should be a place of learning
both academically and from the many cultures and religions around us. Uniforms can restrict people
from practicing their religious expression through clothing. School uniforms do not lower chances of
bullying. Texas Southern University conducted a study on uniforms and behavioral atmosphere of
students and saw that "school incidents rose about 12% after the introduction of uniforms". (ProCon)
