Friendship Essay: Helping a Friend in Need
It is very sad to see a friend or relative suffering or in need, especially when they pretend that
everything is all right. It is a delicate situation when approaching someone in this predicament, as
often a person's pride stands in the way of reaching out for comfort. How to offer your help to an
independent friend or relative in this position requires a bit of clever manipulation and a not–so–
obvious plan in order to help.
If the problem at hand is a financial matter, the first response would be to offer them a loan. On the
other hand, most people would be embarrassed to admit to this, and will perhaps be offended at the
offer. However, instead of outright offering them money, trading a service in return for payment
would not seem as...show more content...
This will certainly make them feel better and will be helping them out at the same time.
Friends or relatives who have children may experience times when they cannot afford to give
them the luxuries of toys, games or name brand clothing. At the same time, while most children
do not understand hard times, these friends or relatives hurt inside because of this. It would
probably be insulting to them if you bought a bag of toys, a new wardrobe for the kids or a slew
of games and delivered these items in order to help. Overall, there is a way to present such items
in a fashion that will not seem like charity. While honesty is the best policy, lending a helping
hand when we are in a position to do so often takes precedence. Telling our life long friend or
family member that our children received clothing as a gift, but it did not fit, or perhaps received a
duplicate toy or game and offering it to their children is a way to help in times of despair.
Many times when family or friends decide to meet or get together to go out for dinner, drinks, or
even to a movie, we take for granite the expense of these excursions and expect that everyone can
participate. On the contrary, when a friend or relative bows out, the reason why they decline
becomes obvious. Here again, little white lies come in to play, and compassion takes over.
Mentioning to this friend or relative that you

Essay The Power of Healing
The Power of Healing There is always the right way to do something, then of course, there the other
way. According to Webster's Ninth New College Dictionary, to be unconventional means to be out of
the ordinary, not lacking originality or individuality. Therapeutic touch is unconventional. It is a
method of healing using energy. Therapeutic Touch (TT) is the practice of facilitating healing using
Universal healing energy. It has been shown to help the sick or hurt, calm the feared and comfort
those who need comfort. Because of it's different approach to helping restore health rather than the
"normal" taking a pill, TT has not been readily accepted by many medical doctors. In A Doctor's

works wonders. For some reason TT is not very popular in hospitals. In a strange different and a
little weird but how come it is not accepted. In a hand out that my mother put out, she lists three
underlying principles of Therapeutic Touch. " #1 a human being is an energy field." Meaning
everyone has energy all around him or her, inside and out. This energy can be focused, with
practice, to help in a positive way. "#2 A human being and the environment are continually,
simultaneously, and mutually exchanging energy." This means that the energy that you have is
not just your own, energy encompasses everything. "#3 Universal order is a force innate to all
energy fields." This means that there is an order to nature that can be trusted This isn't the way that
people tending to think but that doesn't mean that TT has to be unconventional. TT is
acknowledged as part of nursing practice by the nursing organization of New Brunswick. Hence, it
is available ideally to any patient who requests it, but few are using it. More people are not using it
because not enough people are using it. Publicity is a major factor in making or breaking an idea.
TT puts out the idea that everyone can help everyone including his or her selves. If that happened,

A Social Psychological View of the Help
The movie, The Help, is based on the book written by Kathryn Stockett. It was released in 2011
and directed by Tate Taylor (Taylor, 2017). The Help is set in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960's,
and it is about the experiences black women had as maids for white families. These women
decided to risk it all and tell their stories in an effort to show what is was really like for them
(Taylor, 2011). The Help illustrates how these women foughtracism and prejudice by becoming
unified with one another. This paper will address how prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping, and
inequality affect the characters and their relationships in the story.
Prejudice

When she knocked on the door, the women at bridge club unsuccessfully hid from her. When she
went to the window, she spotted a few of them and at first did not understand that they were hiding
from her. She slowly realized they were trying to avoid her. When she got back home she told
Minny, "They made me stand there like I was the vacuum salesman" (Taylor, 2011). This is just one
example in the movie of prejudice that is bordering on discrimination.
Discrimination
Aside from being prejudice toward anyone different from herself, Hilly Holbrook also exemplified
discrimination in the story. Discrimination is similar to prejudice, but it is defined as "behavior
directed against persons because of their membership in a particular group" (Kassin, Fein, &
Markus, 2014). Hilly was prejudice toward Celia, mainly through her own negative beliefs about her.
She did not demonstrate many acts of discrimination toward Celia, but she did when it came to the
maids.
In the beginning of the movie, she was shown in her bathroom marking the toilet paper with a
pencil (Taylor, 2011). That was her way of making sure that her maid, which was Minny at the
time, did not use their bathroom inside of the house. She had a separate outhouse for Minny to use.
Hilly was also a member of the White Citizens Council. She developed a Home Help Sanitation
Initiative, which promoted a law that would require every home in the state to have a separate
bathroom

How Can One Help the Homeless? Essay
How Can One Help the Homeless?
The most common thing that comes to mind when someone mentions living in the United States is
the "American Dream". This dream including a family living in a house with a white picket fence
around it. The grass is nice and green and everything seems simple and dandy; however, this is
rarely seen. In cities there are often people on the street corners holding up signs that say "will work
for food", or something along those lines. The people holding these signs are apart of the growing
population of homeless. Shelters that help the homeless are full and running out of resources. This
may seem like a simple matter, at first glance, but it is actually quite complex. Communities are
continuously struggling with...show more content...
However, housing in the United States is still becoming very limited with time; a growing
population with nowhere to go is causing overcrowding and lack of housing. However, this is not a
problem new to the U.S., housing has been disappear since the early '90s. The availability of rental
housing decreased significantly between 1993 and 1995, according to Robert Hess (Hess).
A solution to this issue may be to take buildings that are being constructed into condos and
apartments and make them into affordable housing; affordable meaning, basing the prices of rent on
the net income of families. If the price is based on net income the family will not have to worry
about paying taxes along with other costs.
Although the diminishing available house contributes to homelessness, it is not the complete cause;
it's the lack of affordable housing. New houses can always be built after purchasing and clearing
land, therefore it's not that difficult for people with money to obtain housing. But what about those
that work minimum wage jobs trying to support a family? That's when it gets tricky. The minimum
wage in North Carolina in 2014 is $7.25 an hour (Mejeur). Assume that a mother and father each
work forty hours a week; that puts them at making $2,320 a month, before taxes. Monthly housing
for the Charlotte, on average, costs $793 a month. That number does not include health care, taxes,
and food. With those cost added in the cost

My Experience In Counselling
My first experience with counselling was when I was roughly 17 years old. Back then I was a
part of the people who believed in the myths surrounding counselling, back then it was my last
option but I can still look back and say that I took that decision on my own and I was prepared to
face resistance which I did, in the form of my parents who thought that it was an option for people
who had gone 'mad'. Overcoming these resistances I finally went ahead for counselling and to my
absolute disappointment, the session was useless and at times even offensive to me. The counsellor
asked me my age and started telling a long list of problems I may be facing. She didn't stop there
and then asked me about my weight and any problems that I may be having...show more content...
The first of which are issues that are personal to me, I realise that there are experiences in my past
that may hinder me as a counsellor the most important of which is my inability to maintain eye
contact with another person which wasn't an issue in the past years but in the counselling session
might convey a very negative impression to the client for they may interpret it as my disinterest.
This issue has prompted me to go to personal therapy and also has increased the relevance and
importance of personal therapy in my eyes. Through this experience I have also realised how
unresolved issues in the past can impact the counselling process with or without you being aware
about them. There are many areas that I need to work on expect this and the major among them is
my competence as a counsellor, I still need to develop various professional skills that I will be
required to employ in the counselling session and that is something I believe I will gain from my
course. The most important thing that believe I need to work on are my own beliefs about
counselling, for a long time I didn't realise that despite being trained for becoming a counsellor I
never realised that even to me counselling seemed appropriate as the last option, a choice you
make when all else fails and also that with time things will eventually get better and you don't
need therapy to work through it. Both of these beliefs seem wrong to be now that I have gained
more objective knowledge of counselling. Firstly, to keep counselling as a last resort the person is
embracing a very likely possibility that things would get worse then on rather than better and if
proper therapy is undertaken at the very beginning of a problem it will improve things for the
individual for definite and may also be more effective and efficient in comparison to if you let it
blow to proportion that may severely

Supporting the Elderly Essay
As adults the transition into old age can be difficult for some people. Frustration, lack of
responsibility and dependence can make the process of aging undesirable. Old age should be
viewed as another phase of life, but not the end of life. In order to help elderly cope with aging it
is important for them to have social interaction. Support from family, friends and the local
community can make a difference in the psychological well being of older adults. There is great
concern for the increasing amount of elderly people without children. Childlessness can not be
directly linked to loneliness and depression in the elderly, but there is some evidence that it can
have an effect on their psychological well being. According to an article...show more content...
Although the main effects of childlessness are minimal in this study for older persons, it can not be
ruled out that childlessness has no direct effect on the psychological wellbeing of older people. The
aspect of well being can differ, but is still important for rural elderly. An article in Sex Roles,
"Compared to their urban counterparts, rural elders experience significant threats to their economic,
physical, and psychological well–being" (Patrick, Cortells, and Barnes, 1993.) Factors such as age,
gender, education, income, and marital status, can be predictors of well–being. More important
though is social support. Socialization differences in men and women can produce varying results
of positive or negative well being. Women are more emotionally supportive and have a larger
network of support. Men do not rely on friends as much and are more withdrawn. In the article,
Gender, emotional support, and well–being among the rural elderly, a study was done to determine
the association among emotional support and well–being as well as gender differences. Evidence
from the study demonstrates "Women and those perceiving less emotional support from family were
more likely to report high levels of negative affect." (Patrick, Cortells, and Barnes, 1993.) The

What is Stress? Essay
Stress is something that affects many people each and every day. Life is full of hassles,
deadlines, frustrations, and demands. For some people stress is so common it is a way of life.
Stress can be very harmful and or helpful. It could help motivate you to meet a deadline and
perform a task under pressure. Stress can also be very harmful, such as memory problems,
moodiness, aches and pains, and eating more or less.
So what is stress? Stress is a normal physical response that happens when you feel threatened or
upset. When you feel that you are in danger whether it is real or imaged. Your body has a response
when stress occurs and it is a way of actually protecting you. Many times, stress helps people stay

your body the effects of stress are muscle tension or pain, chest pain, and fatigue. The effects of
stress on your mood is anxiety, restlessness, and lack of motivation or focus. Finally, the effects of
stress on your behavior is overeating or under eating, drug or alcohol abuse, and social withdraw.
Since anyone at any age can be stressed there is no certain population that is effected the most. I
would say that teenagers get stressed easily due to school, spots and or jobs. The thing that
stresses most high school student out is picking and choosing what they are going to do after
high school and what college they will be going to if any. People a little bit older after college could
be stressed by trying to find a job or trying to find or support a family. Older people could be stressed
if they are running out of money but besides that older people are probably the least stressful people
in are population.
Stress is not only affected in the work place and at home, it is also affected during sports. There is a
ton of pressure in many high school sports especially individual sports. Stress is the body's way of

Personal Essay: Care For Others
Care for others. The way this will help you achieve happiness is that when you help others it gives
you a warm feeling inside. It makes you feel as if you have done something right. This feeling is
almost unexplainable. Helping others is one of the best things you can do. For example, when you
complement someone the best feeling is when you see the look on that persons face and see how
happy you made them. Also, if you do not care for others you will live a lonely life. Without care for
others no one will want to be around you. So, if you care for others you will have a joyous life.

This will help you achieve happiness because if you do what you want you will never be let down.
You will feel like you have a purpose and that you were meant for something, as if it was calling you.
If you love what you do the there is no possible way to be sad or upset. Your life will be filled with
joy and love because every day you get to wake up and do something that truly makes you happy.
Stay in a joyous mood. If you are always in a good mood and spreading joy, there is no way to be
negative. You will always be looking on the bright side seeing how fortunate you are. This will
keep a smile on your face showing that you are truly happy. Also, help others around you to be in a
good mood. This will help you connect with others.
Learn to forgive quickly. This will make it where you are unable to hold a grudge. If you stay
mad at a person you might regret it because you never know the last day you will see them. You
are also just wasting valuable joyous time that you could be having with this person in your life.
Try to always be on good terms with people. Never go to bed angry and think on the positive side of
life. This will make your relationships

Discrimination In The Movie The Help
African American men and women have suffered racial injustice and acts of discrimination
throughout history. The Help stars Viola Davis as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny. These
women, as well as many other African American women, serve as "the help" for upper class white
women and their families. Throughout the film, the women share their hardships as maids in the
hopes of raising awareness for racial discrimination. The HelpI is a film that not only reveals the
hardships of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, but it also reveals many social
justice themes that we should take into consideration as Christians. The first theme that is prevalent
in The Help is dignity of work and the rights of workers. A...show more content...

Civil Rights Movement. Not only did it teach me a lot about our country's history, but it was also
very entertaining. I did not realize how much African Americans were disrespected before I
watched this movie. Even though Aibileen and the other maids were helping white families raise
their children, cook meals, and do laundry, they were still treated horribly. Seeing how the maids
were so used to this horrible treatment broke my heart. Many parts of the film were sad, but it gave
me a lot of knowledge that I did not have prior to watching it. It was really inspiring how even
though the maids were treated so disrespectfully, they did not fight back. Instead, they took a
peaceful approach and impacted their communities by sharing their

Essay on Does Homework Actually Help Students
Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in
High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully
master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what
they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not
mind work load. They feel doing the problems, writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps
them because they practice and remember the material. Aquestion that has come up is whether
assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it's definition, will help students master
material better than assigning less or none at all. I believe that...show more content...
In cases like this, students do not learn the material. By simply writing many definitions, or even
writing wrong definitions, students do not grasp a deep understanding of concepts or main points of
the material. As stated in the book Helping Your Child with Homework, the best type of homework
assignments are the type that include some kind of feedback from the teacher to the student; the
homework assigned to students should also be at a level appropriate for the students learning
abilities, and the assignments should challenge the student intellectually (book citation). Packets
filled with simple questions such as " what is meiosis" or "give the definition of simile" do not
challenge students and teachers do not give much, or any, feedback to students with this type of
homework. Many argue that it is difficult for teachers to give feedback when they teach one hundred
or more students. The amount of papers they need to grade is high and they simply do not have the
time to write comments on every assignment. My answer to this is simple. Instead of assigning
packets of homework, assign a few critical thinking questions. The students would give a brief
summary on the main concept, then perhaps paraphrase a definition that is important to know.
Students would then really think about their answers and the teacher could give comments since
they will no longer have to skim packets. Teachers would only have to read

Asking For Help Essay
Prior to completing Skip Downing's "On Course Self Assessment," I was starting to realize one of
my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly difficult to say a three–word phrase. When it
comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that "I
need help." In writing this paper I hope to recognize the roots of my problem and adopt a plan to
aid me in overcoming this negative behavior. After I took the self–assessment and received a low
score in the area of interdependence, I began considering options for overcoming my hesitation so
that I may become a successful student. The first strategy is to learn that I cannot do everything by
myself. Typically, I never ask for...show more content...
We cannot know everything, and we can all benefit from mutual helping relationships. I may need
someone to explain something discussed in Psychology class today and that person may need the
favor returned for English. Working together and helping others is important in almost every area
of life. I do not need to feel ashamed for reaching out first. As a result of doing the assessment, I
realized that I seldom request and often reject offers of assistance. A successful student would
employ interdependence by actively seeking out mutually supportive relationships to help achieve
their goals and dreams, while doing the same for others in return. I chose this topic because I do not
want to be a struggling student! Interdependence is a key factor in being successful in college. In
order to obtain a degree a college student must do well in all areas of their studies. To accomplish
that, he or she must comprehend the subject matter taught and apply what they learn. If a student
does not understand something and refuses to ask for help when it is readily available, they are
only hurting themselves. Three little words can make all the difference. By asking someone who is
more knowledgeable than they may be in a certain area, they could find the missing pieces that lead
to total understanding. This will enable them to perform better on my assignments and to keep
moving forward towards that college degree. College can be an

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Help ' Essay
The film "The Help" (2011), is a story based on the daily lives of prominent white women and the
relationships with their African–American housemaids in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s
Civil Rights movement in America. A well–to–do white woman and central character in this film,
Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, aspires to be a journalist and decides to write and publish an exposГ©
of the stories of the housemaids in Jackson to achieve this goal, however, only two maids, Aibileen
Clark and Minny Jackson are willing to discuss their experiences with her. The other maid's in
Jackson resist telling Skeeter their stories, fearing the punishments they would endure if the
authorities were to find out. In spite of this, after the malicious arrest of one of their befriended
maids, all of the maids begin to share their experiences, which consist of racial hostility and being
treated as intrinsically subservient to white people. The story Skeeter publishes entitled The Help,
creates a disturbance among the white families in Jackson, by exposing the racism the maids are
faced with, forcing the white families to reflect upon how they have treated their maids. The
storyline represented in The Help exhibits examples of the primordial approach to race and ethnicity,
as well as numerous sociological concepts including segregation, internalized oppression, and white
privilege, which will be exemplified in this paper in order to uncover the race relations evident
within this film.

Depression is a very big topic to discuss. The most commonly asked questions are: What is
depression, and what disorders are related to depression? How common is depression? Is it serious?
What treatment is used? And, What kind of symptoms should a person be looking for?
Depression is more than the everyday ups and downs. You know when a person is depressed when
their sad feelings interfere with their everyday life. Depression doesn't only affect feelings, but can
change behavior, physical health and appearance, academic performance, social activities, and the
ability to make decisions that are face every day. The causes of depression are still unknown, but

People who don't think that teens could suffer from depression are wrong, depression can affect
people of any age, race, ethnic or economic group. One out of every twenty–five teens suffers from

school performance, alcohol and drug abuse, running away, and feelings of worthlessness and
hopelessness. Over the past twenty–five years, researchers have found that the rate of suicide among
teenagers and young adults has increased dramatically. Suicide is often linked to depression. Some
say that talking about depression only makes it worse. The truth is that talking to someone about
your feelings can help you realize that professional help is needed. By showing concern and
support, you can encourage someone to talk to a trusted person. Depression is treatable. Between
eighty and ninety percent of people with depression can be helped. For the more serious cases of
depression antidepressant medications and psychotherapies can be used. For the milder, less serious
cases, psychotherapy may be enough by itself. Antidepressants are used for symptom relief and
psychotherapy is used to learn more effective ways to deal with everyday problems through talking.

Trephining was the most disturbing picture. I am still amazed that people thought that anything
whatsoever could be solved by chiseling away at a person's head. The picture of the skull was
extremely disturbing: I cannot even fathom how horrible it would have been to be a patient of such
practices. Also one would think that after the first gaping hole in a person's head with no results, the
chiseling would stop. However it is obvious by the number of holes in the skull that this was a
procedure that was tried multiple times on one patient. Other than the trephined skull, I also found it
unusual that bloodletting was such a common practice. It was particularly troubling to learn that it
was used for treating mania, which is something I have experienced.
All of the information on the different types of therapies has helped me to more fully understand
psychology. This chapter is dedicated to explaining the current methods of treating people with
psychological disorders in order to help them through a rough time in life. This chapter on therapy
shows the side of psychology that is the result of the hard work of a multitude of psychologists and
doctors.

On the other hand another way of thinking about it is – just how bad would the world be without
that money helping out? The government donates money to the charities from us, the taxpayer and
for many people they like to know where their money is going. Many charities are involved in
improving the lives of people around the globe. There are, however always lots of cynical people
who knock charities especially if the money is not spent in our country, believing that 'charity begins
at home'. Many charities in the United Kingdom do help the local people from homelessness to
cancer relief, but recently international aid – helping others in different countries is one of the most
hotly debated areas in the voluntary sector.
The aid agencies actions and their attachment or lack of it from governments are all under scrutiny.
International aid agencies attract more donations than any other charitable cause bringing in ВЈ486

So how do charities use their money? Charities usually need money for three things. Firstly, the
largest part of any donation goes to the cause or group for which it was

Reflective Essay On Helping People
We always talked about helping others. I noticed that you love helping people, it gives you joy to
help others, and I think that's something we both share. I understand now, when you cannot help
me, you don't feel the joy. In a way you feel like you can't help me and it may feel like a rejection. I
am not rejecting you when you offer help and I say no. There are times where I should have asked
for help and I didn't, because I thought you couldn't, which isn't an excuse, I should have given
you a chance. I didn't ask for help because I was embarrassed and thought you would think less of
me. I have problems with helping others and my professor actually pulled me aside from the final
and wanted me to write why I felt like I need to be a savoir, and help others so much. I talked to her
after class as a therapist and not a professor. I realized that what I thought was helping, was
actually not. I thought all help was good and it's not. When I go out my way and help others who
been helped their whole lives, I'm just feeding into what they want. I'm not letting them learn on
their own, and will continue to help, and its actually not helping at all. I am guilty of doing that to
you sometimes. I'm always trying to help and it's not real help and we get stuck in the same cycle.
We went back and forth on this relationship, at one point you didn't want it, and I did, another point
you wanted it and I didn't. There were points where we both wanted it and It was wonderful. I had

Essay On Help

  • 1. Friendship Essay: Helping a Friend in Need It is very sad to see a friend or relative suffering or in need, especially when they pretend that everything is all right. It is a delicate situation when approaching someone in this predicament, as often a person's pride stands in the way of reaching out for comfort. How to offer your help to an independent friend or relative in this position requires a bit of clever manipulation and a not–so– obvious plan in order to help. If the problem at hand is a financial matter, the first response would be to offer them a loan. On the other hand, most people would be embarrassed to admit to this, and will perhaps be offended at the offer. However, instead of outright offering them money, trading a service in return for payment would not seem as...show more content... This will certainly make them feel better and will be helping them out at the same time. Friends or relatives who have children may experience times when they cannot afford to give them the luxuries of toys, games or name brand clothing. At the same time, while most children do not understand hard times, these friends or relatives hurt inside because of this. It would probably be insulting to them if you bought a bag of toys, a new wardrobe for the kids or a slew of games and delivered these items in order to help. Overall, there is a way to present such items in a fashion that will not seem like charity. While honesty is the best policy, lending a helping hand when we are in a position to do so often takes precedence. Telling our life long friend or family member that our children received clothing as a gift, but it did not fit, or perhaps received a duplicate toy or game and offering it to their children is a way to help in times of despair. Many times when family or friends decide to meet or get together to go out for dinner, drinks, or even to a movie, we take for granite the expense of these excursions and expect that everyone can participate. On the contrary, when a friend or relative bows out, the reason why they decline becomes obvious. Here again, little white lies come in to play, and compassion takes over. Mentioning to this friend or relative that you Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 3. Essay The Power of Healing The Power of Healing There is always the right way to do something, then of course, there the other way. According to Webster's Ninth New College Dictionary, to be unconventional means to be out of the ordinary, not lacking originality or individuality. Therapeutic touch is unconventional. It is a method of healing using energy. Therapeutic Touch (TT) is the practice of facilitating healing using Universal healing energy. It has been shown to help the sick or hurt, calm the feared and comfort those who need comfort. Because of it's different approach to helping restore health rather than the "normal" taking a pill, TT has not been readily accepted by many medical doctors. In A Doctor's guide To Therapeutic Touch, author Susan ...show more content... Amazingly, I calmed down and stayed quit on the floor. Therapeutic Touch not only works, it works wonders. For some reason TT is not very popular in hospitals. In a strange different and a little weird but how come it is not accepted. In a hand out that my mother put out, she lists three underlying principles of Therapeutic Touch. " #1 a human being is an energy field." Meaning everyone has energy all around him or her, inside and out. This energy can be focused, with practice, to help in a positive way. "#2 A human being and the environment are continually, simultaneously, and mutually exchanging energy." This means that the energy that you have is not just your own, energy encompasses everything. "#3 Universal order is a force innate to all energy fields." This means that there is an order to nature that can be trusted This isn't the way that people tending to think but that doesn't mean that TT has to be unconventional. TT is acknowledged as part of nursing practice by the nursing organization of New Brunswick. Hence, it is available ideally to any patient who requests it, but few are using it. More people are not using it because not enough people are using it. Publicity is a major factor in making or breaking an idea. TT puts out the idea that everyone can help everyone including his or her selves. If that happened, perhaps doctors, nurses and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. A Social Psychological View of the Help The movie, The Help, is based on the book written by Kathryn Stockett. It was released in 2011 and directed by Tate Taylor (Taylor, 2017). The Help is set in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960's, and it is about the experiences black women had as maids for white families. These women decided to risk it all and tell their stories in an effort to show what is was really like for them (Taylor, 2011). The Help illustrates how these women foughtracism and prejudice by becoming unified with one another. This paper will address how prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping, and inequality affect the characters and their relationships in the story. Prejudice Prejudice is defined as "negative feelings toward...show more content... When she knocked on the door, the women at bridge club unsuccessfully hid from her. When she went to the window, she spotted a few of them and at first did not understand that they were hiding from her. She slowly realized they were trying to avoid her. When she got back home she told Minny, "They made me stand there like I was the vacuum salesman" (Taylor, 2011). This is just one example in the movie of prejudice that is bordering on discrimination. Discrimination Aside from being prejudice toward anyone different from herself, Hilly Holbrook also exemplified discrimination in the story. Discrimination is similar to prejudice, but it is defined as "behavior directed against persons because of their membership in a particular group" (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2014). Hilly was prejudice toward Celia, mainly through her own negative beliefs about her. She did not demonstrate many acts of discrimination toward Celia, but she did when it came to the maids. In the beginning of the movie, she was shown in her bathroom marking the toilet paper with a pencil (Taylor, 2011). That was her way of making sure that her maid, which was Minny at the time, did not use their bathroom inside of the house. She had a separate outhouse for Minny to use. Hilly was also a member of the White Citizens Council. She developed a Home Help Sanitation Initiative, which promoted a law that would require every home in the state to have a separate bathroom Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. How Can One Help the Homeless? Essay How Can One Help the Homeless? The most common thing that comes to mind when someone mentions living in the United States is the "American Dream". This dream including a family living in a house with a white picket fence around it. The grass is nice and green and everything seems simple and dandy; however, this is rarely seen. In cities there are often people on the street corners holding up signs that say "will work for food", or something along those lines. The people holding these signs are apart of the growing population of homeless. Shelters that help the homeless are full and running out of resources. This may seem like a simple matter, at first glance, but it is actually quite complex. Communities are continuously struggling with...show more content... However, housing in the United States is still becoming very limited with time; a growing population with nowhere to go is causing overcrowding and lack of housing. However, this is not a problem new to the U.S., housing has been disappear since the early '90s. The availability of rental housing decreased significantly between 1993 and 1995, according to Robert Hess (Hess). A solution to this issue may be to take buildings that are being constructed into condos and apartments and make them into affordable housing; affordable meaning, basing the prices of rent on the net income of families. If the price is based on net income the family will not have to worry about paying taxes along with other costs. Although the diminishing available house contributes to homelessness, it is not the complete cause; it's the lack of affordable housing. New houses can always be built after purchasing and clearing land, therefore it's not that difficult for people with money to obtain housing. But what about those that work minimum wage jobs trying to support a family? That's when it gets tricky. The minimum wage in North Carolina in 2014 is $7.25 an hour (Mejeur). Assume that a mother and father each work forty hours a week; that puts them at making $2,320 a month, before taxes. Monthly housing for the Charlotte, on average, costs $793 a month. That number does not include health care, taxes, and food. With those cost added in the cost Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. My Experience In Counselling My first experience with counselling was when I was roughly 17 years old. Back then I was a part of the people who believed in the myths surrounding counselling, back then it was my last option but I can still look back and say that I took that decision on my own and I was prepared to face resistance which I did, in the form of my parents who thought that it was an option for people who had gone 'mad'. Overcoming these resistances I finally went ahead for counselling and to my absolute disappointment, the session was useless and at times even offensive to me. The counsellor asked me my age and started telling a long list of problems I may be facing. She didn't stop there and then asked me about my weight and any problems that I may be having...show more content... The first of which are issues that are personal to me, I realise that there are experiences in my past that may hinder me as a counsellor the most important of which is my inability to maintain eye contact with another person which wasn't an issue in the past years but in the counselling session might convey a very negative impression to the client for they may interpret it as my disinterest. This issue has prompted me to go to personal therapy and also has increased the relevance and importance of personal therapy in my eyes. Through this experience I have also realised how unresolved issues in the past can impact the counselling process with or without you being aware about them. There are many areas that I need to work on expect this and the major among them is my competence as a counsellor, I still need to develop various professional skills that I will be required to employ in the counselling session and that is something I believe I will gain from my course. The most important thing that believe I need to work on are my own beliefs about counselling, for a long time I didn't realise that despite being trained for becoming a counsellor I never realised that even to me counselling seemed appropriate as the last option, a choice you make when all else fails and also that with time things will eventually get better and you don't need therapy to work through it. Both of these beliefs seem wrong to be now that I have gained more objective knowledge of counselling. Firstly, to keep counselling as a last resort the person is embracing a very likely possibility that things would get worse then on rather than better and if proper therapy is undertaken at the very beginning of a problem it will improve things for the individual for definite and may also be more effective and efficient in comparison to if you let it blow to proportion that may severely Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Supporting the Elderly Essay As adults the transition into old age can be difficult for some people. Frustration, lack of responsibility and dependence can make the process of aging undesirable. Old age should be viewed as another phase of life, but not the end of life. In order to help elderly cope with aging it is important for them to have social interaction. Support from family, friends and the local community can make a difference in the psychological well being of older adults. There is great concern for the increasing amount of elderly people without children. Childlessness can not be directly linked to loneliness and depression in the elderly, but there is some evidence that it can have an effect on their psychological well being. According to an article...show more content... Although the main effects of childlessness are minimal in this study for older persons, it can not be ruled out that childlessness has no direct effect on the psychological wellbeing of older people. The aspect of well being can differ, but is still important for rural elderly. An article in Sex Roles, "Compared to their urban counterparts, rural elders experience significant threats to their economic, physical, and psychological well–being" (Patrick, Cortells, and Barnes, 1993.) Factors such as age, gender, education, income, and marital status, can be predictors of well–being. More important though is social support. Socialization differences in men and women can produce varying results of positive or negative well being. Women are more emotionally supportive and have a larger network of support. Men do not rely on friends as much and are more withdrawn. In the article, Gender, emotional support, and well–being among the rural elderly, a study was done to determine the association among emotional support and well–being as well as gender differences. Evidence from the study demonstrates "Women and those perceiving less emotional support from family were more likely to report high levels of negative affect." (Patrick, Cortells, and Barnes, 1993.) As Netflix went public in 2002, shortly a year later their subscription reached the one million mark (Netflix Management, 2011). Recently, Netflix is recognized as one of the 50 most innovative companies, ranking number eight for "streaming itself into a $9 billion powerhouse (and crushing Blockbuster)" with 20 million subscribers (fastcompany.com, 2011). This feature is to foster the online products and less of the by mail rentals. This plan will allow Netflix to redirect their U.S. Postal Services cost, which was at an estimated $600 million in 2010 (Lefler, 2010). This equates to about two million DVDs shipments each day (fastcompany.com, 2011). People a little bit older after college could be stressed by trying to find a job or trying to find or support a family. • 10. Personal Essay: Care For Others Care for others. The way this will help you achieve happiness is that when you help others it gives you a warm feeling inside. It makes you feel as if you have done something right. This feeling is almost unexplainable. Helping others is one of the best things you can do. For example, when you complement someone the best feeling is when you see the look on that persons face and see how happy you made them. Also, if you do not care for others you will live a lonely life. Without care for others no one will want to be around you. So, if you care for others you will have a joyous life. Listen to others. This will keep a smile on your face showing that you are truly happy. Also, help others around you to be in a good mood. This will help you connect with others. Learn to forgive quickly. This will make it where you are unable to hold a grudge. If you stay mad at a person you might regret it because you never know the last day you will see them. The Help stars Viola Davis as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny. These women, as well as many other African American women, serve as "the help" for upper class white women and their families. Throughout the film, the women share their hardships as maids in the hopes of raising awareness for racial discrimination. Even though Aibileen and the other maids were helping white families raise their children, cook meals, and do laundry, they were still treated horribly. Seeing how the maids were so used to this horrible treatment broke my heart. Many parts of the film were sad, but it gave me a lot of knowledge that I did not have prior to watching it. It was really inspiring how even though the maids were treated so disrespectfully, they did not fight back. Instead, they took a peaceful approach and impacted their communities by sharing their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Essay on Does Homework Actually Help Students Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not mind work load. They feel doing the problems, writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps them because they practice and remember the material. Aquestion that has come up is whether assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it's definition, will help students master material better than assigning less or none at all. I believe that...show more content... In cases like this, students do not learn the material. By simply writing many definitions, or even writing wrong definitions, students do not grasp a deep understanding of concepts or main points of the material. As stated in the book Helping Your Child with Homework, the best type of homework assignments are the type that include some kind of feedback from the teacher to the student; the homework assigned to students should also be at a level appropriate for the students learning abilities, and the assignments should challenge the student intellectually (book citation). Packets filled with simple questions such as " what is meiosis" or "give the definition of simile" do not challenge students and teachers do not give much, or any, feedback to students with this type of homework. Many argue that it is difficult for teachers to give feedback when they teach one hundred or more students. The amount of papers they need to grade is high and they simply do not have the time to write comments on every assignment. My answer to this is simple. Instead of assigning packets of homework, assign a few critical thinking questions. The students would give a brief summary on the main concept, then perhaps paraphrase a definition that is important to know. Students would then really think about their answers and the teacher could give comments since they will no longer have to skim packets. • 13. Asking For Help Essay Prior to completing Skip Downing's "On Course Self Assessment," I was starting to realize one of my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly difficult to say a three–word phrase. When it comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that "I need help." In writing this paper I hope to recognize the roots of my problem and adopt a plan to aid me in overcoming this negative behavior. After I took the self–assessment and received a low score in the area of interdependence, I began considering options for overcoming my hesitation so that I may become a successful student. The first strategy is to learn that I cannot do everything by myself. Typically, I never ask for...show more content... We cannot know everything, and we can all benefit from mutual helping relationships. I may need someone to explain something discussed in Psychology class today and that person may need the favor returned for English. Working together and helping others is important in almost every area of life. I do not need to feel ashamed for reaching out first. As a result of doing the assessment, I realized that I seldom request and often reject offers of assistance. A successful student would employ interdependence by actively seeking out mutually supportive relationships to help achieve their goals and dreams, while doing the same for others in return. I chose this topic because I do not want to be a struggling student! Interdependence is a key factor in being successful in college. In order to obtain a degree a college student must do well in all areas of their studies. To accomplish that, he or she must comprehend the subject matter taught and apply what they learn. If a student does not understand something and refuses to ask for help when it is readily available, they are only hurting themselves. Three little words can make all the difference. By asking someone who is more knowledgeable than they may be in a certain area, they could find the missing pieces that lead to total understanding. This will enable them to perform better on my assignments and to keep moving forward towards that college degree. College can be an Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Analysis Of The Movie ' The Help ' Essay The film "The Help" (2011), is a story based on the daily lives of prominent white women and the relationships with their African–American housemaids in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s Civil Rights movement in America. A well–to–do white woman and central character in this film, Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, aspires to be a journalist and decides to write and publish an exposГ© of the stories of the housemaids in Jackson to achieve this goal, however, only two maids, Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson are willing to discuss their experiences with her. The other maid's in Jackson resist telling Skeeter their stories, fearing the punishments they would endure if the authorities were to find out. In spite of this, after the malicious arrest of one of their befriended maids, all of the maids begin to share their experiences, which consist of racial hostility and being treated as intrinsically subservient to white people. The story Skeeter publishes entitled The Help, creates a disturbance among the white families in Jackson, by exposing the racism the maids are faced with, forcing the white families to reflect upon how they have treated their maids. The storyline represented in The Help exhibits examples of the primordial approach to race and ethnicity, as well as numerous sociological concepts including segregation, internalized oppression, and white privilege, which will be exemplified in this paper in order to uncover the race relations evident within this film. • 16. Therapy Essay Therapy Today many people seek professional therapy or counseling for a limited amount of time in order to deal with different life crises. Others seek professional help for the majority of their lives in order to deal with a psychological disorder. After reading this chapter on Therapy, I learned that this was not always the case, and that the way our society views therapy, and the meaning of therapy, has changed dramatically of the years. This chapter not only explains the evolution of therapy, it explores the different therapeutic approaches. I found chapter thirteen to be very interesting. Learning about the different types of therapy was very helpful. I chose to write about...show more content... Trephining was the most disturbing picture. I am still amazed that people thought that anything whatsoever could be solved by chiseling away at a person's head. The picture of the skull was extremely disturbing: I cannot even fathom how horrible it would have been to be a patient of such practices. Also one would think that after the first gaping hole in a person's head with no results, the chiseling would stop. However it is obvious by the number of holes in the skull that this was a procedure that was tried multiple times on one patient. Other than the trephined skull, I also found it unusual that bloodletting was such a common practice. It was particularly troubling to learn that it was used for treating mania, which is something I have experienced. All of the information on the different types of therapies has helped me to more fully understand psychology. This chapter is dedicated to explaining the current methods of treating people with psychological disorders in order to help them through a rough time in life. This chapter on therapy shows the side of psychology that is the result of the hard work of a multitude of psychologists and doctors. Earlier this year I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, which entitles me to long hours of therapy to help me understand and deal with my illness. Although I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Essay on Charity Charity A Charity is an organisation that exists to enable one group of people to help another. It can sometimes be for animals or nature. Many of the best known charities were set up by people who felt passionate about a situation that they believed was wrong or preventable. There are 180 thousand charities in the United Kingdom alone. The idea of charities is to do away with the problems they were set up to tackle. They would prefer not to have to exist at all. In the United Kingdom it is easy to create a charity to do what you think is right. You can raise money and get involved in your...show more content... However, this does not solve all the problems of the world. So some would say, why bother trying? On the other hand another way of thinking about it is – just how bad would the world be without that money helping out? The government donates money to the charities from us, the taxpayer and for many people they like to know where their money is going. Many charities are involved in improving the lives of people around the globe. There are, however always lots of cynical people who knock charities especially if the money is not spent in our country, believing that 'charity begins at home'. Many charities in the United Kingdom do help the local people from homelessness to cancer relief, but recently international aid – helping others in different countries is one of the most hotly debated areas in the voluntary sector. The aid agencies actions and their attachment or lack of it from governments are all under scrutiny. International aid agencies attract more donations than any other charitable cause bringing in ВЈ486 million in 2001–02. This beats donations for cancer, children and animal charities. So how do charities use their money? Charities usually need money for three things. Firstly, the largest part of any donation goes to the cause or group for which it was given (usually around 80%) this will pay for the people, food, medicines Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Reflective Essay On Helping People We always talked about helping others. I noticed that you love helping people, it gives you joy to help others, and I think that's something we both share. I understand now, when you cannot help me, you don't feel the joy. In a way you feel like you can't help me and it may feel like a rejection. I am not rejecting you when you offer help and I say no. There are times where I should have asked for help and I didn't, because I thought you couldn't, which isn't an excuse, I should have given you a chance. I didn't ask for help because I was embarrassed and thought you would think less of me. I have problems with helping others and my professor actually pulled me aside from the final and wanted me to write why I felt like I need to be a savoir, and help others so much. I talked to her after class as a therapist and not a professor. I realized that what I thought was helping, was actually not. I thought all help was good and it's not. When I go out my way and help others who been helped their whole lives, I'm just feeding into what they want. I'm not letting them learn on their own, and will continue to help, and its actually not helping at all. I am guilty of doing that to you sometimes. I'm always trying to help and it's not real help and we get stuck in the same cycle. We went back and forth on this relationship, at one point you didn't want it, and I did, another point you wanted it and I didn't. There were points where we both wanted it and It was wonderful.
