Will–power and determination plays a major role when it comes to people accomplishing goals
and performing the tasks they are given. When a person possesses these two qualities they are
motivated, focused, will not give up easily, determined along with many other things. The word
determination is defined as, "the act of coming to a decision or of fixing or settling a purpose."
Will–power is, "the strength or will to carry out one's decisions, wishes, or plans." In the short story
A Worn Pathby Eudora Welty, the main character Phoenix carried out the meaning of these two

She had to be very careful at this point because one wrong move could cause her a limb such as
an arm or a leg and she was not going to let that happen. She had to do many things such as creep,
crawl, and stretch along with other things in order to make it through this fence. Once she made it
safely through the fence she was able to continue on with her journey. From this situation in the
text Phoenix seems like the type of woman who will face anything no matter how big or small the
obstacle is and will not think twice about it. Once she starts a task she has to complete it. She
refuses to turn back especially if it is for her family. Family (meaning her grandson) is of high
importance to her and she will not let anything stop her from getting what he needs.
One main obstacle that stood out in the text was when she encountered the hunter and his dog. In
this scene Phoenix was on the ground because she had fell and the hunter had showed up and
helped her up. Once he had her standing on her own two feet he had began questioning her and
telling her that she needs to go back home, but she ignored what he was saying. She knew the
reason for making this long, enduring trip and she was not going to turn back now. He (the hunter)
even went so far as to take his gun and point it directly in her face. This did not bother her nor even

John Hale Character Analysis
Reverend John Hale from Beverly, Massachusetts was summoned to Salem, a town full of supposed
witches, manipulative children, a corrupt government, and depraved leaders, yet he takes on an
impossible task of saving the wicked from themselves. Playwright Arthur Miller's 1950's play, The
Crucible, displays static character John Hale as a determined, willing, young man who stays true to
his morals and remains righteous and compassionate throughout the work. Beginning to end, John

originally thought he had discovered concrete evidence, he realizes the "witches" are innocent.
This reveals his honest and just character, proving Hale as a person does not change, even if his
perception and opinion does. "You must pardon them. They will not budge. The sun will rise in a
few minutes. Excellency, I must have more time" (Miller 53). Revealing his character isn't evolving
throughout the play, but he remains the same fair and honorable man, specifically during the trials.
Hale states "Excellency, if you postpone a week, and publish to the town that you are striving for
their confessions, that speak mercy on your part, not faltering" (Miller 54), again displaying the
Reverend's empathetic and remorseful personality. Once again, Hale's character provides a lesson
for every reader–to remain sensible and fair even if others around you are not; however, never
allow your trust and faith to be taken advantage of because this only hurt Hale in the end.

There are many character traits that make someone successful in life. Some traits you are born with,
other traits are mindsets. There are a few character traits that coaches, teachers, bosses, or any other

I knew that in order to be starting, I needed to be the hardest worker on the team. With all my hard
work came a starting position. The biggest lesson that my father taught me was in seventh grade.
It was a normal day of basketball practice and we were scrimmaging. During a particular play, I
ran the wrong route. He made me run around the gym for forgetting what to do. I decided that I
was too tired to sprint around the gym. Because of my decision, he chose to kick me out of

Harry stays on the trail when Ron wants to leave yelling "No Ron we have to get this done". He

chapter sixteen, "The chamber of secrets", when he fights and kills the basilisk to stop Tom
Riddle from killing Ginny Weasley by "Throwing his whole weight into the sword and plunging

The narrator of "Bartleby, the Scrivener" is a lawyer who is serious about his work and made it
his first priority. His assistant Bartleby was a hard worker at first, however, he was distant and did
not open up to people as much as he should've. This lead to conflict between Bartleby and the
narrator. Melville makes the lawyer always ignore his issues which made him unable to directly

Eliza Doolittle of Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw, is first introduced in Covent Garden with an
impression that isn't easy to forget. Her slanged language and persistent personality make her a
notable character in literature. As she comes under the wing of professor Henry Higgins, she learns
simple etiquette and improved phonetics. However, Higgins' crude demeanor causes Eliza to violate
the pillars of respect and responsibility, though she continuously complies with the trustworthiness

personalities and actions shape the outcomes of our lives and therefore our destiny. This statement
opposes the traditional view that man's fate is determined by an external force (name it god or even

In "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare, Tybalt says "This, by his voice, should be a Montague.
/Fetch me my rapier, boy" (1.V.71–72). Like the quote shows, Tybalt always made abrupt decisions
that were for the worse of things in every situation he faced. Tybalt was one of the most feared
Capulets because he always looked how he could turn any altercation into a violent one. He did
not care for others but cared mainly for his ego. In Act 1 scene 5, we get another perfect example
of how Tybalt made decisions with malicious intent. A Montague has upset and "hurt" Tybalt
because he believes that a Montague has invaded their party inside the Capulet house. In the play
Tybalt states, "This, by his voice, should be a Montague./Fetch me my rapier, boy. What dares the
slave/Come hither, cover'd with an antic face,/To fleer and scorn at our solemnity?/Now, by the
stock and honour of my kin,/To strike him dead, I hold it not a sin" (1.V.71

kill someone that he thought was a Montague, just by listening to their voice. He would have killed
him too if it weren't for his uncle, Capulet, who had stopped him just in time or else something bad

Jasper Jones was my favourite character while I was reading Jasper Jones because he is a strong
character. He doesn't have much family or friends in the book but seams to have a steady life. He

Character Analysis of Shrek and Lord Farquaad
In traditional fairytales, ogres are man–eating beasts. The prince usually rescues the princess; they
marry and live happily ever after. How do the makers of 'Shrek' use presentational devices to reverse
this tradition, to reveal the ogre as good, and the prince as evil?
In this essay, I am going to analyse the characters of Shrek and Lord Farquaad, and write about how
filmmakers use different presentational devices to create an unusual fairytale.

This is an attempt to frighten the villagers away. He also tries frightening them by shouting at them
fully to scare them away from his home, and attempting to slay him. The storybook characters react
in shock, frozen in horror, and it takes Shrek to tell them what to do for them to runaway. This
suggests that Shrek does not really want to hurt them, and just wants to scare them off, and have
some privacy for himself.
When Shrek tries to intimidate Donkey, he reacts by laughing at him because he doesn't see the
harm that every other person sees, "You need some Tic–Tacs" Donkey ridicules. Donkey keeps
irritating Shrek without noticing by running in to his house with Shrek letting him, jumping up and
down on his chair and when Shrek kicks him out, peering through the window staring at Shrek. Also
just generally doing things Shrek doesn't really want him to do, e.g. invading his privacy. The mice
tease Shrek by thinking that his house is their new home, but they cannot see what he is, so they
believe him to be just some big cuddly overgrown bear. Both these suggest that Shrek isn't as
frightening as he should be, if he was all he wants, he would be shouting and crushing bones, and
terrifying the unwanted guests away.

A Changing Character
In the short story "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin a schoolteacher from the city of Harlem
struggles with life and figuring out how to helped his troubled brother. All though named Sonny's
Blues the main character is actually Sonny's brother who is the narrator and goes through his life
and how he reacts to the many problems his younger brother has come into. The brothers grew up
in the poverty stricken city of Harlem where the brothers had to avoid drugs and violence constantly.
Growing up, Sonny struggled to stay out of trouble and ended up making some bad decisions

Eventually the narrator and invites him to live his family once he is released from prison and Sonny
reluctantly agrees to live there until he finishes college. This is a big turning point in the narrator's
character because he had finally began to wonder " about the life that Sonny had lived" (Baldwin
243) and started making his efforts to take care of his little brother like he once promised his mother.
When Sonny moves in with the family, he is given the expectation to finish college and stay out
of trouble. Sonny has other ideas though and skips his classes to go to the local jazz club and play
music. When the narrator first learns of Sonny's antics he is very disappointed and is frustrated that
Sonny continues to pursue a musical career. He believes it is part of the reason that Sonny has had
so much trouble in the past and doesn't believe it is a positive thing for his brother. Sonny is
immediately kicked out and the two go for another extended period of time until talking again.
Eventually the narrator has another change of heart and invites his brother to live with him again
and Sonny agrees. The two struggle to communicate so one day Sonny invites the narrator to come
watch him play at the jazz club and it is then that the narrator truly understands his younger brother.

In his short–story "Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street," Herman Melville presents an
elderly Wall Street lawyer who has trouble dealing with the behavior of his employee Bartleby. The
Lawyer, who is a major character in the story, serves as the first–person narrator, which helps readers
understand his thoughts and feelings regarding the plot and its characters. This technique allows
one to infer that the Lawyer is not a round character; there is no complexity in identifying with the

Lawyer struggles with maintaining the changing attitudes he feels towards Bartleby:
"melancholy merge into fear" and "pity into repulsion" (137). The Lawyer intended to fire
Bartleby for his refusal to work, but did not, for he feared of being portrayed as a "villain" (138).
According to Jack Getman, the Lawyer has "become a different, more appealing person, one who
is more responsive to the needs and rights of his workers" (Getman 738). It is evident that the
Lawyer undergoes many changes in the interest of Bartleby. Paragraph 95 proceeds with the
Lawyer contemplating on what to do with Bartleby. Here, readers gain insight on the Lawyer's
perspective concerning morality and moral responsibility. The Lawyer feels a sense of helplessness
and is convinced that he can no longer be accountable for Bartleby. He realizes that he "could not
