2. Purpose
Luther is an entertainment based TV programme, it has aspects of
educational features in terms of the world of policing and law. It runs
for 60 minutes. This programme relates mostly to the people that live
and work in London as the areas they see shown on the programme
are relatable. It shows the work and home life of Chief Detective
Investigator, named John Luther. This programme is exciting and
thrilling.

3. FORM AND STYLE
The form and style of this programme is quite fresh and modern.
Luther started on May 4th 2016 (6 years ago). The episodes are still
running and they have recently come out with series 5, just this month
(January). The form of the show is technically introducing a new plot or
in Luther’s case a new murder case to solve. Each episode has a case
and it solved in the space of that 1 episode. You do not have to watch
the show methodically in order to be able to understand it as it is quite
structured in itself (episodes). The atmosphere/ genre of the
programme is crime/ drama, there are aspects of romance and thriller
combined.

4. CONTENT
The content of the TV series is the main man himself (John Luther) who
is the Detective Chief Inspector, he is based in Central London working
there in the forces, he has a case he must solve each episode, some
cases are dragged out further as this makes the series a lot more
interesting to watch for the audience. There are central characters
within this episodic narrative. We become close to the characters as
we go into their home lives ect. The shot types are quite varied as this
keeps the cinematography broad and a lot more diverse, this is good as
it allows the audience to stay engaged and excited about what they are
watching.

5. MEANING
The meaning of the show really just gets down into the personal lives
of all the different kinds of people that are living in London, we go into
their homes and personal lives and really get to know them. Its an
insight into how other people work and operate. This may be different
for some people watching at home as they may be stuck in their own
little town trapped and don’t really have a true understanding of
what’s what’s really out there. As I have watched Luther I feel that I
have learnt a great deal about society and the way people think and
feel just from having watched the series.

6. GENRE
The genre of Luther is a crime/ drama, also known as a hybrid genre, as
mentioned before, we get glimpses of other genres such as romance,
thriller and action. We can class these as sub genres.

7. TARGET AUDIENCE
The age categories that would be mature enough and appreciate it
would be around 16 – 50+. The reason for having the youngest age as
16 is because of the language, violence and sexual references.

8. FREQUENCY
The show is British and filmed here in London. The episodes come out
every Wednesday at 9pm. This series is also available on Netflix and
BBC iPlayer, this is a good way to catch up on the gripping series.
