Football it is the most popular sport in
Greece. We have lots of different teams in
Greece like Olympiakos, Panathinaikos,
Paok, and Aek.
3. Basketball
Basketball it is the second most popular sport in Greece.
The National basketball team considered as a major force of
world basketball, winning the Eurobasket twice, (1987,2005), the
World Junior Championships in 1995 and having reached the final
four in three of the last four World Championships FIBA
(1994, 1998, 2006).
Lots of the best teams in Europe are from Greece like Olympiakos,
Panathinaikos, Paok, and Aris.
4. Volleyball
Volleyball is played between two teams of six players with a ball. It
is very popular sport in Greece. The game is played on a rectangular
field 9 X 18 m. The object of the game is to score by sending the ball
into the opposite field. By the latest rules the ball can be touched
instantly from all the athletes body .
Winner of the game is the team which earns 3 set’s first. Each set is
25 points(scores) . After every set the teams must change field.
The game can be played on the beach too, with 2 players each team.
5. Handball
Handball is played between two teams of seven players (1 goal
man and 6 in the field) with a ball. It is popular sport in Greece
too. The game is played on a rectangular field 20 X 40 m. The
object of the game is to score by sending the ball into the opposite
goal. The ball can be touched only from the athletes hands.
The game tries 60 min.(1hour) divided in two parts 30 min. each
one.
Winner of the game is the team which scores most goals. After
every half time period the teams must change field.
The game can be played on the beach too.
6. Athletics
• Athletics are very popular in Greece. Most of them, as sports, are
estimated in ancient Greece and they continue until our days exactly
as they started.
• A great number of Greek teenagers are training in athletics.

The Olympic Games is a multi-sport event held every four years.

the French Baron Pierre de Coubertin in the late 19th century.
The first recorded celebration of the Olympic Games
in antiquity was at Olympia in 776BC
The Olympics also had religious significance since in honor of the
god Jupiter, whose huge statue stood at Olympia. The race
winners were admired and be came immortal through poems and
statues. The prize for the winners was a crown of olive branches.
