5. Xplore, Xperience and Xcel
There are certain qualities in individuals which are inherent while others
are imbibed. These qualities are not apparent from outside. But on
examining the fathomless intellect of individuals, one can find a wealth
of wisdom, which is reflected in their actions, intellect and calibre in
their working environment. These qualities set apart the extraordinary
from the ordinary. XLRI selects such extraordinary individuals and
inculcates in them a unique set of skills, knowledge and experience.

7. Message from the
Director
XLRI is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee this year – 60 years of
relentless and committed service to the nation. We recall with
pride the finest corporate leaders we have moulded for more than
half a century. Being one of the pioneers in the field of
management education, XLRI was also the first to start the one-
year General Management Programme in the year 1997. Since
then this programme has consistently produced outstanding
professionals true to the standards of XLRI.
The students are executives who have at least five years of
experience. This backdrop together with focussed lectures in the
classroom, interaction with the faculty, sharpening of
competencies and skills – all combine to produce a world class
manager who is ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow.
The batch of 2010 is unique – in that it is a blend of young and
spirited executives who have the rich experience of industry, and
yet are eager to groom themselves further in the intellectual
realms of knowledge and learning. The concepts, theories and
practices in management, have enriched them further as they
prepare to join the corporate world. XLRI has groomed them into
managers of excellence who are bound to make a significant
contribution to the organizations that recruit them. These are
managers who will “make a difference.”
I am proud to present the batch of 2010. Give them the
opportunity they deserve. They will be assets to your organization.

8. Message from the
Chairperson
GMP
Management graduates in India lack substantial industry experience
prior to their management education, making their education highly
theoretical in nature. Criticism often encountered was that the
graduates lacked practical insights and needed experience before
they reached decision making roles in different functional domains.
In response to this challenge, we conceptualized the 'General
Management Program' which imparts theoretical knowledge and
strategic skills to practising managers with substantial experience in
their industries. This program is aimed to groom managers, to
quickly shoulder greater responsibilities, possess deeper insights and
be potential candidates for leadership positions. To augment the
process of building world class leaders, part of the course is a three
week international immersion programme; where the students visit
collaborating foreign universities (e.g. Darden School of Business,
AIM Manila etc) attend classes, execute projects for organisations in
different countries. Customized for one year full time residential
program, the pedagogy has been refined to maximize peer to peer
learning and to take students to leading edge in their areas of
interest.
I take immense pleasure to introduce to you a new breed of
managers, the GMP batch of 2009 – 2010, selected through a
stringent admission process to ensure that we train people with the
right attitude and focus on continuous self development. I welcome
you to come and interact with this highly motivated and persevering
group of individuals.

The rich and diverse experience of the students of the GMP batch makes the class discussion in general
very interesting and meaningful. Specifically in the Marketing course, I taught for the current batch of
GMP students, the live examples they provided enhanced the learning of the course. Overall I am sure
the batch would be able to integrate the concepts to their expereince and make more effective decisions
as managers.
I wish them all the best for a successful career.

GMP, XLRI's one-year programme for participants with prior work-experience, has evolved- over the
years- into a mature programme with an enviable value proposition. A rigorous academic programme,
an international immersion and high quality peer learning ensures that every GMPian develops
exceptional qualities and adds value in every kind of business scenario. The batch of 2009-10 is a special
batch: they are individuals who have chosen to take the bold step of investing time and money in
enriching their knowledge base during a period in which most others have opted to try and retain the
jobs they have. This is what gets reflected in the attitude of the 2009-10 GMP batch: a preparedness to
face the dynamic uncertainties of a changing environment; a quiet confidence; a belief in themselves.
I am sure you too will identify these traits when you meet them.
