credentials, training, and experience. When offering treatment, the endoscopist uses a thin, flexible tube
known as an endoscope that has a built-in miniature ultrasound probe. The doctor will pass the endoscope
through the patient's mouth or anus to the area to be examined. The doctor then will use the ultrasound to
use sound waves to create visual images of the digestive tract.

which had been detected at a prior endoscopy or had been seen on x-ray tests, such as a computed
tornography (CT) scan. EUS produces a detailed image of the lump or lesion, which will help your doctor

5. EUS helps the doctor determine the extent of spread of certain cancers of the respiratory and
digestive systems. EUS allows the doctor to assess the depth of the cancer accurately and whether
it has spread to adjacent lymph glands or nearby vital structures, like major blood vessels. In some
cases, EUS is be used to obtain a needle biopsy of a lump or lesion to help the doctor determine the
proper treatment. For EUS of the upper gastrointestinal tract, a patient should have nothing to eat
or drink, usually for six hours before the examination. The doctor will disclose to the patient when
to start this fasting and whether it is advisable to take the regular prescription medications.
