3. INTEGREEN: Project overview
EU-Project in the Life+ Programm
Duration: 1/9/2011 – 28/2/2015
Partner:
Municipality of Bolzano (IT) (Coordinator)
TIS innovation park (IT)
AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AT)
Total Budget: 1.311.810 € (ca 46,8% LIFE+ contribution)
Objective: improvement of traffic management strategies by
combined traffic and environmental measurement with stationary
and mobile sensors.
Implementation area : Vienna (AT) and Bolzano city (IT)
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 2
4. INTEGREEN: Motivations & objectives
The starting point:
Environmental impact
produced by urban traffic
Seasonal traffic flows peaks
from ext. centroids
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 3
5. INTEGREEN: Content objectives
Technological dimension:
•«Environmental» traffic management
demonstration
•Enhanced traffic / air pollution
monitoring system
•Environmental-oriented traffic policies
testing (with impact assessment)
Social component:
•Awareness-raising about
environmentally-travelling
and driving for smart multi-
modality
EU component:
•Share INTEGREEN as a
«environmental» traffic
management best-practice
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 4
6. Technology objectives
The INTEGREEN project
From a technical point of view, the
novelty if INTEGREEN is the
combined use of fixed stations
and probe vehicles for the
detection of traffic and air
pollution levels.
Mobile air pollution
measurements system is the
most challenging part of the
project (covered by AIT).
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 5
7. Technical assessment (high-level architecture)
Traffic management center
Data sources layer: several
components gather (raw) data
from available systems
Data center layer: data-types
are stored and information
extraction processes are
executed
Front-ends layer:
data/information are released
to service providers
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 6
8. Technical assessment (high-level architecture)
Data flow
Vehicle data-source: one of
the input sources to the
supervisor center
Vehicle front-end: local
server for collection of mobile
data
Wireless Communication:
Real-time sensor-data is sent
to server at regular intervals
Mobile probes: vehicles
equipped with the
INTEGREEN-mobile system
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 7

Design with FRAME
Requirements have been mapped
into a FRAME architecture. The
outputs represent an input for the
detailed design activities covered in
the Design Action.
Specific functions in FRAME
cover Environmental and Traffic
Management Issues.
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 8
10. Technical assessment (technological level)
Block diagram of the mobile system
Embedded sensor modules:
• Monitoring of Traffic data
• Monitoring of Environmental
data
HMI: data from the management
center is processed
Telematic + Communication
Unit: Real-time transmission of
data
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 9
11. Technical assessment (design & implementation)
On-board measurement systems
On-board environmental monitoring unit
(Air-flow control, air pollution sensors: NO2,
O3; position data)
On-board traffic monitoring unit
(CAN-data; IMU-data; position data)
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 10
12. Technical assessment (technological level)
Mobile measurement results:
Test drives in Vienna and
Bolzano
Use cases:
• Measurement on urban
roads
• Measurement on
highways
• Measurement near fixed
air quality stations
Presentation of measured
data in different colors (red
is still green)
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 11
13. Social assessment (impact level)
Awareness-raising campaign & networking
Awareness-raising campaing: need to focus to very specific focus
groups that could act as natural «mulitpliers» of the concept
conveyed by INTEGREEN
High and
primary schools
Professional
drivers Tourists
Citizens’ «models»
Social activities have a fundamental importance in order to put the premises
for structural changes in the targeted scenario and to give other decision-
makers the basis to replicate the INTEGREEN approach in other similar
environments.
Objectives of this parallel activities have been specifically consolidated in the
dissemination plan defined at the project’s start.
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 12
14. Awareness-raising campaign (social level)
• Facebook and Twitter
account since
November 2012
Informative channels: Social networks
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 13
15. Awareness-raising campaign (social level)
Informative channels: flyer
About 3.000 copies already distributed!
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 14
16. Awareness-raising campaign (social level)
Informative channels: Sustainable drivers stickers
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 15
18. Network assessment
Local Networking
Key for early exploitation and multiplication of
project activities!
Stakeholders involvement
• SASA: local bus company
• Car sharing operator
• Local Agency for the Environment
• A22 highway & Environmental Engineering Faculty of the University
of Trento – joint working group on correlation between traffic and air
pollution
• Institute of Renewable Energies of EURAC – SEAP definition for
Municipality of Bolzano
• BLS and Mobility Department / Agency of the Province of Bolzano
• Two Workshops in Bolzano
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 17
19. Network assessment
EU-networking
International networking
• Technological know-how shared in LIFE+11 ENV/IT/002
CLEAN-ROADS
• Results sharing with FP7 project CARBOTRAF (with possible
best-practice exchange with the Austrian city of Graz)
• AIT in EARPA network – the most important EU automotive
association
• TIS and CBZ are going to enter the Co-Cities Forum
• Sharing activities on numerous EU portals, e.g. CIVITAS /
CIVINET, ELTIS, EPOMM and ECOWEB
Krems, 22/05/2014 International Conference for E-Democracy and Open Government 2014 18
20. Summary
