2. Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world;
however they did not act ethically. In December
2008, Wal-Mart settled 63 laws suits that spans
over several years across 42 states accuses Wal-
Mart of cheating workers on pay. The settlement
cost Wal-Mart $352 million. Based on comments
made by Wal-Mart attorneys and spokespeople, it
was clear that the company realized that they
acted unethically.
3. The managers were the one’s acting
irresponsible and unethically. Changing the time
cards, making the employees work off the clock,
is not something that should be done at all.
When the managers altered the time cards, they
were thinking about now and not the
consequences they were going to have to pay.
The managers were only thinking about the now
and maybe not what the company wanted them
to do but they did a selfish act and it hurt the
company.
4. Intellectual Property is the same as owning a car or a
house. Information obtained from the Internet is
someone's intellectual property and cannot be used
without consent. Taking someone's information or
intellectual property is just like breaking into their house
and stealing their television or any other piece of
property. It needs to be protected just like any other type
of property. There are ways that one can protect their
property such as using patents, trademarks, copyrights,
or trade secrets. Internet users must understand the
different types of property protections and what they
must do to use the property if it is at all possible.
5. Copyrights protect the works of others under the
term "authorship". Items such as works of arts,
writings, and music are the most popular
copyrighted items. Copyrights last for the life of
the author plus 50 years and are registered in the
Library of Congress. Technology has made
authorship accessible for any one; an e-book of
5000 works can be written, published, and
registered in the Library of Congress. Users
of copyrighted items must receive approval from
the author.
7. Determining the number of words or phrases taken from
a copyrighted piece of work is somewhat ambiquious,
therefore the term" fair use" cannot be easily defined. As
a result fair use is associated with infringement.
Permission to use one's work is not as simple as
acknowledging them as a source. The copyright office
cannot grant permission. Understanding fair use is
critical to protection of intellectual property. There are
certain situations that constitute fair use of copyrighted
material; according to the copyright law section 107
reasons such as teaching, comments, criticism, news
reporting, and research are authorized as fair. Four
factors are listed in the copyright law, sections 107-118
that further explains fair use.
