Types of Festivals
 Festivals are of 3 types .
 They are National
Festival,
 Religious Festival
 Harvest Festival.
National Festivals
 Festivals which are
celebrated by the entire
nation are called
national festival.
 They are –
 Republic Day
 Independence Day
 Gandhi Jayanti
Independence Day
 India became
independent on 15th
August, 1947 .
 So the independence
day is celebrated on 15th
August.
 The Prime Minister of our
country hoists the flag at
Red Fort in Delhi and
gives a speech.
Republic Day
 India became a
democratic republic on
26 January, 1950. we
celebrate it as Republic
Day.
 The main function is held
at Rajpath .
 A special pared is taken
out by the armed forces.
Gandhi Jayanti
 Mohandas Karamchand
Gandhi is better known
as Mahatma Gandhi.
 He is also known as the
Father Of The Nation.
 He always believed in
Ahinsa and fought
against the British
without violence.
 He said “Be the change,
you want to see in the
world”.
Religious Festivals
 India is a land of many
religions.
 So, we have many
religious festivals that are
celebrated with joy
across the country.
 Few of them are
Christmas, Diwali, Holi
Dusshera, Durga Puja,
Rakshabandhan, and
many more.
Diwali
 Diwali is known as the
festival of lights.
 It is celebrated because
on this day Lord Rama
returned home to
Ayodhya after 14 years
in exile.
 People Decorate their
homes so that God
Lakshmi come to their
house.
 People also burst
crackers because Diwali
is the festival of light.
Holi
 Holi is the festival of
colors.
 It is celebrated mostly in
North India.
 The do puja and there is
a story behind this
festival and because of
that story people still
burn Holika.
 People all over India
celebrate this festival by
playing colors, sand and
give sweets to relatives,
and many more.
Rakshabandhan
 On this day, sisters tie
rakhi(a thread) 0n their
brother s right wrist and
pray for their safety.
 This is celebrated by the
sister tying a rakhi then
the brother gives a gift
to his sister for praying for
hi safety.
Dussehra
 The festival is celebrated
as the day on which
Lord Rama killed Ravana
.
 It is also known as
Vijayadashami.
Durga Puja
 In West Bengal, Durga
Puja is celebrated with
great pomp and show.
 Goddess Dugra is
worshipped for the three
days.
Guruparabs
 The Sikhs celebrate the
birthdays of all their ten
gurus.
 The ten guru’s were-
Guru Nanak, Guru
Angad, Guru Amar Das,
Guru Ram Das, Guru
Arjan, Guru Har Gobind,
Guru Har Rai, Guru Har
Krishan, Guru Tegh
Bahadur, Guru Gobind
Singh, Guru Granth
Sahib.
 These days are known
as Guruparabs.
Buddha Purnima
 The birthday of
Buddhism, Lord
Gautama Buddha, is
celebrated as Buddha
Purnima.
 People offer special
prayers and exchange
greetings on this day.
Christmas
 Christmas is celebrated
by Christian because
Jesus Christ was born on
this day in Bethlehem.
 Christmas is celebrated
on 25th December .
 A special kind of
decorated tree, known
as Christmas Tree is put
up in homes.
Id-ul-Fitr
 Muslims celebrate Id-ul-
Fitr and Id-ul-Zuha .
 During the month of
Ramzan, Muslims fast
from sunrise to sunset.
Harvest Festival
 Harvest is an important
activity in our country.
 It is the time when a
crop is sown by the is
ready for reaping are
called Harvest Festival.
Bihu
 Bihu is the harvest
festival of Assam.
 Special Bihu dances are
performed across the
state.
Pongal
 Pongal is the harvest
festival of Tamil Nadu.
 It is a three day festival.
Onam
 Onam marks the
celebration of season in
Kerala.
 Special dishes are
prepared and served on
banana leaves.
Baisakhi
 It is celebrated on 13th
April every year.
 The festival is mainly
celebrated in North
India, particularly in
Punjab and Himachal
Pradesh.
