“It’s time to start living
the life you imagined.”
Henry James
“All men dream, but not equally. Those who
dream by night in the dusty recesses of their
minds, wake in the day to find that it was
vanity; but the dreamers of the day are
dangerous men, for they may act on their
dreams with open eyes, to make them
possible.”
T. E. Lawrence

How many of you really love your jobs? Or do you dread Mondays? Live for weekends? If that’s you, or you are beginning to feel like this, then you are in the right place. However, if it is just that you had to get up early for the 7AM breakfast and I was the only game in town, well that’s fine too.
4 hours including cleaning, cooking, child care… Is that enough for you?
Given a work life of 40 years, you will have this many hours of life in your work life113,680 will be work, including 9 hours per day and 2 hours of commute. That’s a lot of time. Shouldn’t it be better?
That’s it… or live with what you have. But there’s a challenge – finding a new job that isn’t exactly what you already have is tough. You will be up against those who have those skills and have proof points. So let’s look at option 2.
This is the basics. You have to understand this and it isn’t the opposite of what you don’t like. This is hard work, but work we should be doing throughout our lives. At the intersection of these points will be ideas you can use to transform what you do every day.
Again, go thru everything. Can you sing? Do you draw? Just make a list and include everything. We are all good at a lot of things. We just don’t love them all.
Take time with this. Go back to your past – when you were feeling great and loved what you were doing – play, volunteer work, real jobs – what made you happy? Write down a good long list. Don’t assess any of the items for job potential – just write. Look at your current job – what do you enjoy now?
If you get stuck, remember this definition – the best of these activities occur when your mind is in flow.
Look at both lists. Mark up the things you are good at list by crossing out things you actually don’t like to do. Make a new list with items that fall into the intersection. If you love it and are good at it, keep it in. Put it aside. Give it a few days.
Now, ask yourself the question – what of these things would you like to be doing now? See if a job doesn’t start to appear from it. Often the job isn’t one that actually exists, but there may still be a strong business need for it. That means you can sell it to your company (or another if it isn’t a fit).
It isn’t impossible that some of what you do today is what you want to do tomorrow, if you could just do more of it and less of other things. It may not be a career change needed, but just a course correction.
If you have been waiting for your manager to help you out here, you will wait forever. Instead, it is on you to take action. It will take 3 steps to get there.
Title – 1-2 lines summarizing what your company needsChallenge – what is the problem for the companyOpportunity – what could happen if you could fix that challenge? Focus on the businessProposal – what should the company do differently to solve the challenge. This is not about you, but can describe what is neededValue – what will the company get if this change is implementedWhy you – now propose why you should get the job
Show your written plan to your trusted advisors – you do have them don’t you? Adapt it as they ask questions. Make sure you include objection handling in your proposal – there will be objections. Your advisors can help here. Make sure to include solid proof points – WIIFM.
Practice your deliveryThen, schedule the meeting with your manager. Do not share the doc until after. Have the discussion. Ask about next steps. There may be other people who need to hear about it.
Rejection can happen – you are probably very valuable doing what you do now. Make sure to consider/offer alternatives.
This may be your fear. But if you pitch this positively, not from a position of hating your work, you won’t fall into this hole.
As we get older (though some get this earlier) we care more about why we were put on this planet. A job you perceive as drudgery has no meaning.
Greg’s story. Getting that you need to do what you need to do.
You can improve your view of your life this way. Assess and notice – do the work and just find where your current job aligns with what you should be doing. Enjoy it. And focus on all the things that are good in each day – they are there. . But you can simply redefine your job. You don’t sell software – you are in the business of helping to solve people’s problems. You don’t stare at monitors – you ensure people have a wonderful experience with your company.
Do you think that life can be better than it is now? We all know at least one person who achieved the profession of their dreams and soars with satisfaction. That person could be you. Take that first step today.
