Take life for Granted
Have you ever thought about the fact that we are all just one decision away from
existing or not existing? I recently found that a decision was made that possibly saved
my existence.
My great-great-great-great grandfather, Menton Isaiah Harp, surrendered at the
Battle of Vicksburg to Ulysses S. Grant. Before being captured his general, John
Pemberton negotiated terms of surrender with Grant on July 3rd, 1863.
Grant initially demanded unconditional surrender (meaning all would be prison-
ers of war for the next 2 years) but changed his mind. He granted (pun intended) parole
to those who would lay down their arms and pledge allegiance to the Union.
On my grandfather’s military record, it shows that he was captured and paroled
by the Union on the same day of July 3, 1863, making him a survivor of more than 9000
of his comrades who died in that same battle. He went on to start a family - my family -
in Crossville, Alabama and lived until age 82.
If not for one decision by Ulysses S. Grant to change his mind, my ancestor
would have most likely died with so many other POW’s in that tragic war that has
marred our history and our country. I would not exist.
In scripture, we learn of countless decisions made that affect our existence. In the
beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. Adam and Eve decided to eat of the
forbidden tree, turning our knowledge of Good and Evil upside-down, including suffer-
ing and death.
Cain decided to kill Abel and man’s thoughts and intentions became so continu-
ally corrupt that God made the decision to destroy mankind. One man made the differ-
ence. Noah obeyed God and God changed His mind to allow Noah and his family to live.
But Noah had to decide to build an ark according to the parameters God commanded.
Later, Abraham decided to obey God and leave his homeland, traveling to a place God
would lead him. Because of his decision to obey God, He granted that through Abra-
ham’s line all the earth would be blessed. He would beget a son in his old age. The son of
promise was Isaac, and through him we have the Jewish nations.
Through this line we find one more choice from God. He decided to send His
only Son to this earth to live and die in our place. Through Him, all of the turmoil from
man’s decisions in history can be restored in your life.
You were decided upon long ago. “For you [God] formed my inward parts; you
knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonder-
fully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well” (Psalm 139:13-14).
God decided to have a relationship with you. Will you reciprocate and obey His word,
or will you take life for granted?

The Loyalty of Christ
The loyalty of Christ to His Father is seen in His
accomplishing the work that God gave to Him. That work
was the work of redemption. Christ gave His live as a
ransom to buy man back from his sins. In Romans 7:14
Paul tells us “For we know that the law is spiritual:
but I am carnal, sold under sin.” Under the power of
sin meant that man was under the penalty of death
(Ezekiel 18:4), and needed to be redeemed.
An example of redemption is given to us in the
Old Testament. Moses wrote that, “Now if a sojourner
or stranger close to you becomes rich, and one of
your brethren who dwells by him becomes poor, and
sells himself to the stranger or sojourner close to
you, or to a member of the stranger's family, 48.
'after he is sold he may be redeemed again. One of
his brothers may redeem him; 49. 'or his uncle or his
uncle's son may redeem him; or anyone who is near
of kin to him in his family may redeem him; or if he is
able he may redeem himself” (Lev. 25:47-49).
Christ was loyal to God in doing all that God had
entrusted to Him. He lived a perfect life that He might be
the perfect sacrifice and thus able to ransom man from
his sins. Jesus had testified of His perfection declaring,
“And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not
left Me alone, for I always do those things that please
Him” (John 8:29). Later in that same chapter Jesus
challenged anyone to deny this statement. Jesus said,
“Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the
truth, why do you not believe Me? (Jn. 8:46). None
other could have made such a challenge for it would
have been too easy to point out our sins but the silence
of Jesus’ critics is evidence that they could find no fault in
Him. The writer of Hebrews would later say of Jesus,
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sym-
pathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points
tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Heb. 4:15). Jesus
was thus qualified to offer His life in order to ransom
mankind from their sins and this He did by going to the
cross to pay that ransom. Paul testified to this fact in his
first letter to Timothy. “Who gave Himself a ransom for
all, to be testified in due time” (1 Tim. 2:6). The sacri-
fice was finished. The ransom had been paid. Sec-
ondly, Jesus was also loyal to God’s word. In the open-
ing year of His ministry, in the Sermon on the Mount, Je-
sus said, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law
or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to ful-
fill. 18 "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and
earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no
means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19
"Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these
commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called
least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does
and teaches them, he shall be called great in the
kingdom of heaven.” To destroy the law and prophets
would mean to prevent the fulfillment of its types and
prophecies. Christ came to fulfill.
