Local Missions
With Mission Sunday approaching, it is essential to discuss the local efforts in this community. With
Covid-19, it has been very challenging to navigate our regular activities to reach the neighborhoods around
us, and I pray we will be able to conduct every event this year. In the meantime, we are focusing on things
we can do to reach out.
House to House Heart to Heart (H2H): If you are unfamiliar, this is a publication produced by the
Jacksonville Church of Christ for local partnering congregations. They send their magazine articles to our
neighbors, with our information, making this an outreach of the Deerfoot congregation. I spoke with one
gentleman who attended our “Pizza with Santa,” he explained that he, “reads every issue” and decided to
come. He and I have continued to study, but he is heavily involved in the church of the Highlands. I know I
would never have been in contact with him without H2H. We have produced a letter and additional Bible
study material to supplement this month’s issue. We have been provided the contact information of those
receiving the publication in our area, and we plan to call them to start the conversation. Please pray for our
efforts in this.
Be Kind Series: Our Morning Message has been a short-recorded devotional every morning from Mon-
day to Friday since March. These have meant to be fun and positive in hopes that our neighbors will be en-
couraged during these challenging times. Our prayer is that this encouragement will lead to seeking out our
recorded services on Sunday and Wednesday. Several individuals we have contacted through sharing our
morning messages have begun to watch and even share our Sunday services. These short videos are helping
people hear the Gospel in this community. We use Facebook ads to boost one of these messages a week,
and it appears as an ad in 5 different area codes within 30 minutes of our building. This has helped raise
some interest in our community. The money spent is $25 a week, and it ensures that those with Facebook
are at least seeing the message appear. It is like digital door-knocking.
Billboard: We are in the process of renting out a billboard on Chalkville Mountain Rd. We will be using
the simple, and yet powerful statement we have been sharing in this community since March: “Be Kind.”
You can help: Utilizing billboards and Facebook ads is expensive, yet both give us a local outreach. At
this time, we actually get more views from each of you sharing, commenting, and even liking the morning
messages. This leads to a global outreach! Some of the places I know of are Belize, South Africa, India,
Scotland, New Zealand, Australia, Cambodia, Italy, and France, just to name a few. Please consider sharing
these messages daily and engage with those of your friends who comment. This tells Facebook to
“organically” share the videos with more people for free! Please pray for our efforts to start conversations
about the Gospel with our neighbors. We are reaching out in 2020, and I thank you all for your efforts.
In Him,
Richard Harp

YOUR FEET CAN BE BEAUTIFUL
Has anyone ever compliment you
on your feet? Paul talked of those individuals who had
beautiful feet. He wasn’t speaking of the physical appear-
ance of those feet but of their involvement in work and
service to God. He told the Roman brethren, “For who-
ever will call upon the name of the Lord will be
saved. How then shall they call upon Him in whom
they have not believed? And how shall they believe
in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall
they hear without a preacher? And how shall they
preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written,
HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO
BRING GLAD TIDINGS OF GOOD THINGS” (Rom.
10:13-15).
The feet are said to be beautiful because of the
message they bring. Perhaps Paul mentioned the feet
because so many of those who preached at that time
traveled by foot. The Battle of Marathon was fought on
the plains of Marathon in the year 490 B.C. between the
Greeks and the Persians. If the Persians won the Greeks
would see their way of life destroyed and themselves
become slaves. The people in Athens, 25 miles away
from the battle, waited anxiously to know the outcome.
Were their warriors able to stop the Persian advance? In
the distance they saw a runner bringing news from Mara-
thon. The man’s name was Pheidippides. He had run the
22 miles without stopping to bring the good news:
“Rejoice, we conquer”. And with those words he col-
lapsed and died.
Imagine how welcome, how beautiful to the peo-
ple of Athens was the sight of that messenger who
brought the good news of victory. Paul here is quoting
from Isaiah 52:7 in regard to God’s promise that Judah
would be brought back from captivity in Babylon and re-
stored to their own land. The messenger is seen in the
distance running, an indication of the joyful message he
is bringing. Such a sight was indeed beautiful to those
Jews waiting for that very moment in time.
The last words of Jesus before leaving this world
were, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to
all creation” (Mk. 16:15). The word gospel means “good
news.” The good news is the news of being released
from the captivity to sin. The world is enslaved to sin for
to whoever we yield ourselves to obey we become the
slaves of that which we obey (Rom. 6:16). Those Chris-
tians in Rome had been slaves of sin but they had
obeyed that form of doctrine that made them free from
sin. Whenever we involve ourselves in teaching the gos-
pel to others we are bringing good news to them that
they might be free from their sin that is destroying them.
In bearing the good news to them, our feet are beautiful.
Are your feet beautiful? Have you helped teach anyone
that good news?
