Just One More Thing…
There’s always one more thing. One more task. One more activity. One more
expenditure. One more reminder. One more problem. One more solution. It never seems to
end! From day to day, the cycle repeats itself. Whether it’s something exhausting or
invigorating, things continue to fill up our lives. Age makes no difference. Each stage of
life in this world has its own set of activities, tasks, and events. Like chasing a proverbial
rabbit, people can become fixated on one more thing, until there isn’t one more thing, and
our lives on earth come to an end.
People can live their whole lives in such a manner, never asking why they have
dedicated their lives to the pursuit of one more thing. Solomon spoke of man who had no
children or relatives, and yet labored constantly for riches he was not satisfied with. As
Solomon said, “…there was no end to all his labor…and he never asked, ‘And for whom
am I laboring and depriving myself of pleasure?’” (Ecc. 4:8b). He never considered why
he was endlessly devoted to the next task. What greater purpose did it have? What would it
accomplish in the end? While the things and activities of this world have their place and
purpose according to God’s design (Ecc. 3:1-8, 11; 5:18-19), if all our efforts are focused
on the next thing of this life and not committed to things that are eternal and spiritual, then
all our effort is pointless.
In Luke 9:57-62, Jesus encountered several individuals who desired to follow Him
and be part of His kingdom. For two of them however (v.59-62), the problem was that they
wanted to do one more thing first before following Jesus. These things were not
unimportant. But during Jesus’ short ministry on earth, those who wanted to follow him
had to leave everything behind immediately (Mk. 1:16-20; Lk. 5:11).
Those of us who are followers of Christ must be diligent not to wait until one more
thing is done to put Jesus first in our lives. “Soon as I get this done, I will help with this
ministry, or assist this person, or get together with my fellow Christians, or spend time
reading the Bible, etc.” There will always be one more thing while we’re here on earth.
And if we let the things and activities of this world control us – whether they are important
or not – then we will never accomplish our true purpose which is found in serving our
Lord Jesus Christ. God forbid that we ever ask ourselves in the end, “Why was I always
pursuing one more thing and missing the big picture?” As God’s Word says “you do not
know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little
while and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). Today is all we have for certain in this world.
Therefore, let us wisely serve Christ and put His Kingdom first in our lives today. If we let
one more thing get between us and putting Christ first in our lives, then Christ will always
be second, because there will always be one more thing.
For those of you who have not yet made the decision to put Christ first in your life
by putting Him on through faith and baptism (Gal. 3:26-27), there will always be one more
thing until you decide that nothing else matters. Do not wait until everything falls perfectly
into place, because that will never happen. Take hold of today, take hold of Jesus. As God
declares, “Behold, now is the acceptable time, behold, now is the day of salvation.”
