___:___-___ MISSION SUNDAY MISSIONARIES
MICHIGAN/ROMANIA – Joshua Dykes
Joshua is working with the Swartz Creek
Church of Christ in Michigan and Deerfoot
Church of Christ where he is training for his
Mission’s to Romania.
Swartz Creek church of Christ is a large
congregation (by Michigan standards) with a
membership of around 300 Christians. The
congregation currently has 3 elders - Paul
Holland, Mark Rutledge, and Todd Jones. The congregation also has 3
ministers - Paul Holland (Pulpit), Jared McLeod (Youth and College), and
Joshua (Missionary in Training and Co-College). From the late 90s to the
early 2000s, Paul Holland and his family were missionaries to Iași, Romania.
In January 2021, Joshua was offered a position at the Swartz Creek church of Christ to serve
as the Missionary in Training and Co-College Minister. In this role, He was given the broad
task of preparing for the mission field. He moved to Swartz Creek, Michigan from Trussville,
Alabama upon graduation from college, and started work at the Swartz Creek congregation in
June 2021. Since being in Michigan, Joshua has grown and learned in a variety of ways. In
preparing for the move to Romania (that will take place in Spring 2024), Joshua has had to
stretch his limitations and expand his comfort zone beyond what he thought possible.
In the Summer of 2021, Joshua took his first survey trip to Iași, Romania. During that trip, he
got to see what life was like in the Moldova region of Romania, as well as examine the state of
the Church in that city.
Joshua’s learning of the Romanian language is continually improving thanks to his teacher,
Alexandra.
In June and July 2022, Joshua was in Arad and Oradea, Romania for 30 days. Over the course
of the trip, his language continued to improve; he made new connections and friendships; he
studied the Bible with numerous Romanians and almost persuaded an individual to become
immersed in Christ.
From August through December 2022, Joshua sought to strengthen the college group at Swartz
Creek since one of his responsibilities is co-ministering the college group along with fellow
minister Jared McLeod. He studied with and baptized two individuals in the Swartz Creek
area.
Along with the local outreach, Joshua has taught Bible classes and preached numerous
sermons, in Swartz Creek and in Northern Michigan. He also did two Mission Group
presentations at Freed-Hardeman University to promote the work in Romania with the hope of
building a mission’s team.
Joshua just returned from a trip to Iasi Romania, March 22 thru April 2, 2023, where flyers
were handed out and a Seminar and Gospel meeting were held. There was several
non-Christians who attended the meeting and seminar. Their ages were 33 years old and
younger. Heather was able to go on this trip with Joshua.
