The God of the Living
Life is beautiful. Life is powerful. One life can touch many lives. So it can
be said of Dennis Washington. No doubt he is on our hearts and minds today as we
lift up his family in prayer to God, expressing our love for them. In both joy and
sorrow, we remember Dennis, and praise God for his beautiful life and the shining
example of Christian love that he is to us all. When loved Christians like Dennis
pass on from this world, it can be all too easy to think of them in the past tense. So
often the world speaks of departed loved ones in the past tense as well. The
Sadducees who didn’t believe in the resurrection spoke in this manner of departed
individuals. But to these doubters of eternal life, Jesus had some death-defying
words:
“But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was
spoken to you by God: ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the
God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” – Mat. 22:31-32
In Lk. 20:38, Jesus concluded this statement by saying, “for all live to Him.”
It’s natural to view those who passed away as being in the past. But this is not the
truth. God wasn’t the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. As Jesus powerfully
revealed, God IS the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – for all live to Him. To say
that Dennis was a good Christian man isn’t enough. Because the truth is so much
more: Dennis IS a good Christian man, and always will be. He continues on though
separated from us for a time. And that is all that death is – a separator. Nothing
more. As God’s Word decisively declares:
“But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal
will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, ‘Death
is swallowed up in victory.’ ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your
sting?’” – 1 Cor. 15:54–55
Death does not and cannot destroy life. Death has no such power. Death will
be forced to relinquish every life that it holds (Rev. 20:13). And though the
separation of death is painful in the present, the future is inevitable: The death of
death itself, and our reunion with our loved ones in Christ for all eternity (1 Thess.
4:16-17).
We serve a living God, who is God to the living. And we serve a living
Savior, who gives eternal life to His servants. That Jesus will swallow up death for
all time is evidenced by His own victory over death – the empty tomb bearing
witness. Jesus makes this promise: “Because I live, you will live also” (John 14:19).
His very life is our promise and guarantee of an eternal future with Him and our
loved ones.
So as we dwell on and cherish Dennis in our memories and in our hearts, let
us always think about who he is – not who he was. For he is, and always will be.
And so will we. God be praised!
