What is Purpose Sunday?
Our Purpose Sunday is coming up in three weeks. What is Purpose Sunday? Our
elders have taken 2 Corinthians 9:7 and applied it to set the budget for the coming year.
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” This decision process is literally what you
purpose to give between you and God alone. This being said, the elders do not want to set
a budget based on arbitrary numbers that could lead to compulsion. It would definitely
remove the concept of giving cheerfully as well. On Purpose Sunday, we will all be given
a purpose card. On this card you will be prompted to simply write what you plan/purpose
to give in the coming year. If this changes due to job loss etc., and are not able to give as
you intended, you are not expected to keep up with your purpose. This is to simply to give
the elders an estimate for where they set the budget. The cards are later destroyed once the
budget is set.
What do you plan to purpose for the coming year for your giving? A great place to
begin the planning process is to look to scripture. The Apostle Paul told two congregations
the same advice he would give us:
“Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia,
so you also are to do. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside
and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come” (1
Corinthians 16:1–2).
Paul gives great words of encouragement concerning our overall purpose in this
life:
“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make
it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I
have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining
forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of
God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12-14).
The words of Solomon may help us as we consider our ultimate purpose:
“The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected
sayings; they are given by one Shepherd. My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of
making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The end of
the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole
duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:11-13).
As we contemplate our purpose as Christians, and what we intend to purpose, the
words of Peter can guide our thoughts and plans. You have already been chosen.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own
possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness
into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9-10).
He chose us to walk in the light, and because of this, we all find our purpose in Christ.
