Notes From the Harp
There is No Good Without God
There is no good without God. You
cannot even spell Good without God.
Where does good come from? Good was
created in the beginning. It is mentioned
fourteen times in the first three chapters
of Genesis. In eleven of those verses,
“God” and “Good” are together.
Jesus himself reserved good for God.
“And, behold, one came and said to him (Jesus), Good Master, what good thing shall I do,
that I may have eternal life? And he said to him, “Why do you call me good? There is none
good but one, that is, God: but if you will enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matt
19:16,17).
Jesus is implying that the man has placed Him on the level of God. This may be a test to see
if the man truly meant to do so. Jesus and the Father are good.
James the Lord’s brother reserved good for God.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights
with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us
forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures” (James
1:17,18).
Here James is comparing the word of truth to the good gift of God that came down. It
was Jesus, His Son. Through Him, we are His first-fruits. We are the first-fruits, since God
created the church through His Son. If as Christians we are God’s first fruits, then we must
know that God sees us as good.
When God created His first fruit in Eden, we know His response.
“The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and
trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was
good” (Gen 1:12).
When God finally created man it is the only time He responded to this new creation
as “very good” (Gen 1:31). When God sees you and I becoming a part of His first-fruits, the
church, we can infer that it is very good in His eyes. Is the church good in your eyes? When
we strive to follow God’s instruction and obey His commands, the result is very good.
Are you a part of the good that God has provided you through His Son, through the church?
There is no good without God.
-Richard Harp

Living Up to Your Name
Names are important. They are important to us and
they are certainly important to God. Names mean
something. Just notice a few examples from the Bi-
ble. When Jacob had a dream of a ladder going up
into heaven and he saw angels ascending and de-
scending on that ladder he recognized the place
where he was as “the house of God.” Therefore, “…
he called the name of that place Beth-el. But the
name of the city was Luz at the first” (Gen.
28:19). The name Bethel means “house of God.”
Later Jacob would return to Bethel at the command
of God and there “he built there an altar, and
called the place Elbethel: because there God
appeared unto him, when he fled from the face
of his brother” (Gen. 35:7). This new name put
emphasis on the “God" of the “house of God.”
Sometimes names were given to things Sam-
uel “set up a stone between Mizpeh and Shen,
and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hith-
erto hath the LORD helped us” (I Sam. 7:12).
Sometimes God even changed the names of peo-
ple. He changed Abram’s name to Abraham and
Jacob’s name was changed by God to Israel (Gen.
17:5; Gen. 32:28).
Sometimes we talk about living up to our
name. The names of people meant something and
people named their children with the hope that they
would live up to their name. We read in the New
Testament of a man named Barabbas who was
guilty of insurrection and murder (Mk. 15:7). The
name Barabbas means “son of the father.” It has
been speculated that perhaps this mother had given
her son that name hoping that he might be the Mes-
siah, “the Son of the Father.” If so she must have
surely been disappointed that he never even came
close to living up to that name. However, there are
many in the Bible who truly lived up to their name!
In the book of Philemon we read of a man by
the name of Onesimus. Philemon was a Christian
and a fellow-laborer with Paul. He was apparently
rich for he owned slaves. Onesimus was one of
those slaves. Onesimus had run away from his
master and made his way to Rome where he was
taught by Paul and baptized into Christ. Paul then
sent Onesimus back to his master Philemon with
this letter. Now the name Philemon means
“”profitable” but obviously a slave that has run away
is not a profit for his master but a loss. So when
Paul sends him back he tells Philemon in this letter,
“I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I
have begotten in my bonds: 11 Which in time
past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable
to thee and to me” (Philemon 1:10, 11). Now that
Onesimus returns to his master, not merely as a
slave but a Christian brother he is truly profitable.
Onesimus was living up to his name.
