The Unwearied Runner
In Isaiah the fortieth chapter Isaiah speaks to the
nation of Israel about God’s infinite power and wisdom
especially in contrast to the idols worshiped by the nations
around them. In addressing Israel Isaiah twice introduces
his comments by saying, “Have you not known? Have you
not heard?” (Isa. 40:21, 28). It is after the latter of these
two verses that we read, “Even the youths shall faint
and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, 31
But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their
strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and
not faint.”There is a beautiful song (“Teach me Lord to
Wait”) that incorporates a portion of this Scripture. There
is much in this passage that we need to learn.
First of all we are taught that there is the certainty of
weariness and decay for Isaiah tells us that “even the
youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall
utterly fall.” All physical life, in the very act of living tends
to decay and death. We may not like it but it is a reality of
life. If we are blessed with a long life we all will pass
through three stages, growth, maturity and decay. These
stages pass in rapid succession. Peter declared in his first
general epistle, “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory
of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers,
And its flower falls away” (1 Pet. 1:24).
Long before the forces of decay begin to work in the
natural life, labor, sorrow and responsibility make one
weary and ready to faint. Many people become “burned
out” and leave their work and that includes several
preachers. In the Bible we read of those who were faithful
men of God who became discouraged and were ready to
quit. Elijah was one such. Elijah had put his life on the line
in challenging the prophets of Baal to determine who was
the true God, Baal or Jehovah. It was Jehovah who an-
swered the prayer of Elijah and sent doe fire to consume
his sacrifice. The people responded by falling on their
faces and crying out, “The LORD, He is God! The
LORD, He is God!” Everything seemed good until Jeze-
bel threatened to kill Elijah and caused Elijah to flee for
his life. God came to Elijah and questioned him as to what
he was doing. Elijah then answered God saying, “I have
been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the
children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn
down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the
sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my
life” (1 Kings 19:10). Elijah felt that all of his work and
been in vain, that he had made no difference and he was
ready to quit.
The same type of thing had happened to Jeremiah.
He had preached God’s word to the people to encourage
them to turn back to God but he was repaid by the people
trying to kill him, accusing him of being a traitor to his na-
tion. Again it seemed to Jeremiah as if all his labor for
God had been in vain and so he was ready to quit. In
Jeremiah 20:9 we read, “I will not make mention of
Him, Nor speak anymore in His name." But His word
was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my
bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could
not.”
