Running head: WHY FACEBOOK MIGHT NOT BE GOOD FOR YOU 1 WHY FACEBOOK MIGHT NOT BE GOOD FOR YOU 9 Why Facebook Might Not Be Good for You: Some Dangers of Online Social Networks James Gardiner Seattle University Why Facebook Might Not Be Good for You: Some Dangers of Online Social Networks Walk into any computer lab at any college campus across the country and you’ll see dozen’s of students logged onto an online social network (OSN). In the last few years, the use of these networks has skyrocketed among Internet users, especially young adults. These new virtual communities are significantly influencing the way young people communicate and interact with one another. A report titled “E-Expectations: The Class of 2007” went so far as to label upcoming college freshmen “the Social-Networking Generation” (qtd. in Joly, 2007, para. 3). In late 2006, the Pew Internet Project, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research group that examines the social impact of the Internet, reported that 55 percent of online teens have created a personal profile on OSNs and that 48 percent of teens visit social networking Web sites daily, with 22 percent visiting several times a day (Lenhart and Madden, 2007). The two most popular OSNs are MySpace and Facebook.MySpace is a general networking site that allows anyone to join, develop a profile, and display personal information. In less than four years of existence, MySpace has exploded to become the third most visited Web site on the Internet behind only Google and Yahoo (“Top Sites,” n.d.) with more than 100 million members (Joly). Facebook is geared more toward college students (until recently it required that a person attend a university to join the network) and is the number-one site accessed by 18- 24-year-olds. According to research studies cited in the Toronto Star, 90 percent of all undergraduates log on to Facebook and 60 percent log on daily (George-Cosh, 2007). Facebook has also experienced unprecedented growth in its relatively short existence and now ranks as the seventh most visited site on the Internet (“Top Sites”) and has a member base of more than 19 million (Joly). With the use of OSNs increasing among young people, the term “Facebook trance” has emerged to describe a person who loses all track of time and stares at the screen for hours (Copeland, 2004). While “Facebook trance” might describe only an occasional and therefore harmless phenomenon, it gives rise to important questions: What are the possible negative consequences of OSNs? What should youthful users be watchful for and guard against? The purpose of this paper is to identify the possible harms of OSNs. I will suggest that overuse of OSNs can be a contributing factor to a decline in grades as well as to other problems such as a superficial view of relationships, and increase in narcissism, and possible future embarrassment. I don’t mean to deny that OSNs have positive consequences for young people. For one thing, they provide a “virtual h ...

Aqeel R Alnemer Mr. copley ENGLISH 101 Feb\22\2016 Social Media Impact to Young Generation In this decade social media use has gained high level of usage. Organizations and institutions have shifted from the formal way of communication and connected social media as way of communication because its simplicity. However, with all the applicability of social media in the current generation it has emerged as a tool to destruction for many young people. MySpace Facebook and Twitter are among many social sites that people choose to keep their communication through. Children and young people are using low language, engage in sex, immoral behaviors. Therefore, although social media has its benefits of cross border and regional connectivity of individuals, its impact on young generation morality cannot be overlooked. Social media has caused deaths and social mistrusts among many individuals and businesses. First, social media has been used in spread of movies, audios and pictures that have negative impact to the viewers and especially generation. Lack of censure of the information through the social medial channels allows for any kind of information to pass to different recipients. Young people are the majority of the modern technology participants. Such information may have unaccepted behaviors such as sexually oriented materials, hate speech especially in situation where racial profiling is common, and cyber harass due to the possibility of hiding the identity of the social media participants. Information is known for its ability to change mind set and especially for young people who have not yet developed principles and therefore the information available to such people will be the information they will use to establish their life principles. Therefore sexual, improper communication and violence will be the most common principles that young people affected by these vices will be in their future life. Therefore, the future generation will fancy such vices which have a negative impact to the society in large. For most young people differentiating fantasy from reality has been a great issue. They are exposed to violence in the media which in most cases is a fantasy instead of the reality. Therefore young people believe in the violence spread by the media and they practice such violent acts amongst themselves. They also try the sexual behaviors they witness in the media which in most cases is very risk for young generation. Abortions due to unwanted pregnancies due to uncontrolled sexual behaviors as depicted by the media are become normal with the current generation (Clark 43). Secondly, people and especially young people may not be aware of the privacy and confidentiality their personal data might be. Implication of sharing such information on social media of daring since most of social media sites do not have security policies. Therefore most young people might disclose confidential on the social sites causing distress after their identity and is .

In this thesis I address the fundamental elements of Facebook’s makeup that affect resulting social behaviors from participation with the site. In my exploration I first define the relationship between communication and social realities. It is through this relationship we begin to understand Facebook’s significance in our culture. I then consider the forms of communication media by which Facebook exists and their qualities. After briefly describing the inclination of news media interactions to embody entertainment, I argue for Facebook’s presence as a news media platform. Once establishing this I discuss inconsistencies in the site’s social qualification and legitimacy due to the localization of users’ participation within the realm of a vast network of the possibly accessible information. Facebook space is qualified; that is, it has degrees of value that differ among users. These inconsistencies are the cause of new yet subtle movements within socially acceptable behaviors. It is the trust and reliance of other users to give and gain information, inter-user dependency, which realizes and perpetuates these movements.
