Real Ale Pubs in Basford, Nottingham
The Basford area to the north of Nottingham city centre is well served by the tram system and all the
pubs listed here are in walking distance of a tram stop.
Horse & Jockey, Mill Street, Old Basford
Close to David Lane tram station, this Castle Rock pub has a traditional looking public bar complete
with darts board. A separate lounge bar doubles as a function room. As well as the Castle Rock
beers, there are always two or more guest beers. Bar snacks, sandwiches and light bites are
available as is a traditional lunch on Sundays.
Fox & Crown, 33 Church Street, Old Basford
Just round the corner from Basford tram station is the Fox & Crown, which is the brewery tap for the
Alcazar brewery. The brew house itself is adjacent to the beer yard out the back. The number of
beers produced by the brewery runs into double figures and most of them are usually available in
the horseshoe shaped bar. A pool table provides entertainment and Thai food sustenance.
Horse & Groom, 462 Radford Road, Basford
Turn left out of the Fox & Groom, left again by the church and cross the bridge over the tram line.
Navigate the busy junction by McDonald's and walk down Radford Road to the corner of North Gate
for this favourite of the local Camra (Campaign for Real Ale) members. Alternatively, take the tram
to Radford Road station and walk back. Up to nine real ales are on at any one time and they can be
enjoyed in the main bar area or the snug. A large function room is available for hire. Wednesday is
traditional pub games night and fish suppers can be ordered on the first Friday of the month. Food is
available at other times, including a traditional Sunday lunch.
Lion Inn, Moseley Street, New Basford
Not far from Shipstone Street tram station, the Lion is popular with lovers of live music, jazz being
the most common variety. A central bar in this bare brick walled pub serves ten or more real ales.
An old well in the drinking area provides a view down to the cellar. On summer days, the large beer
garden is popular. A wide range of food is available from snacks to full meals.
Frog & Onion, Noel Street
Half way between the Beaconsfield Street and Noel Street tram stops, the Frog & Onion is a large
local pub with pool table and darts board. Old wooden barrels decorate the top of the bar and the
eight real ale hand pumps look promising though rarely are more than two working.
