Back To The Future
Level 1.4: The Challenge
The Darius Davis Story
In The Beginning
I started Playing karaoke in the garage with my siblings and parents and got a
great joy and excitement from it. My oldest brother was a MC and DJ since he
was younger which enlightened my second oldest brother to start music. After I
hit the age of 9 my youngest sister and I started rapping together, not so
talented but ambitious and excited to have something we thought we were
good at but still had a long ways to go. We gave ourselves rap names and
spent more and more time making music. we wasn’t good at writing so we just
rap four lines and thought it was a hit song.
As I got older I started writing music and over the time I started gaining more
talents from practicing and me and my sister made our first song name
“clowning”. On family night we performed our new song and my family told us
to hold on to the dream because we have the potential to make it. I took those
words of advice and put even more hard work into. By the age of thirteen my
sister decided rapping wasn’t her passion no more so I was by myself for now. I
started writing more and more song and told my parents that one day I will be
rich and famous from my music and I will be one of the greatest of all time.
In the 7th grade I met up with a few kids from my neighborhood that had the
same passion for music as me so we started a group called “Soulja Click”,
named after the now deceased rapper Soulja Slim. We had six artist and we
sat down and wrote music on our free time with the mindstate of being the best.
I always was the leader I was the most organized and the most optimistic of us
all. We continued the group until we graduated middle school and went our
separate ways after attending high school. I was still hungry for the fortune and
fame from the music so I stayed focus and grounded to my dream. I met up
with one of my old group members Shawn Evans and it was just me and him
on the road to riches.
It wasn’t until later on in my 9th grade year when I first recorded in a actual
studio. I was nervous and excited at the time I took that opportunity and did
what I been working on half my life. I then joined a group called D.P.B (Dem PA
Boys). We recorded one mixtape and I was the first one out the group to record
a solo track. The solo track spread through my neighborhood and around the
city getting my name out and started building a fan base. I felt like my dreams
where coming true and a few months later our producer set us up with our first
performance at a teen back to school jam. I was scared out of my mind but I
just remembered what my family told me growing up and proceeded to perform.
After that night I knew my time was coming.
The Breaking Point
In the beginning of my 10th grade year my music producer took all of our music
from our mixtape “The Right Way” and the music I was working on for my
album and disappeared. Heartbroken and upset at that point I was ready to
give up on my music career. I took all of my music books and CDs and put
them in a shoe box and sat them in my closet and said I was done. My dad
notice after awhile I haven’t been walking around the house rapping like I used
to so he asked me what was the problem. I explained it to him and he told me
that’s part of the industry don’t let nobody steal your shine just this time be
more smart about it and work harder to show the people that try to get you
down that they do not have an impact on your life. The talk with my dad gave
me a new look at my music career.
The Birth Of Gatormade Entertainment
I started working solo at this time just to focus more on my skills and teaching
myself how to write lyrics in different genres. On November 20, 2007 I was
engaged in a phone conversation with shawn and I told him, “I won't let people
stop me from reaching my goals because I am stronger than that.” I said “I’m
tough skin like I was made by an alligator,” I thought to myself I like that. I’m
made like an alligator so I’m Gator made, and thats how I came up with the
name Gatormade Entertainment. I took that and started applying it to my music
and started designing clothes as well and I labeled it “G Made appeal.” From
that day on I knew it was the beginning of a productive and bright future. I later
on signed a few artist to my record label and started to try and take over the
music, clothing and film industry one day at a time.
After graduation I had grew my fan base from just close friends to hundreds. I
started working on my music and clothing line more since I was no longer in
school. A year after graduation i joined the U.S. Army on march 7, 2011 and
thought to myself this is an opportunity to enhance my fanbase and have the
opportunity to collaborate with others around the country. When I got to my first
duty assignment in El paso, Texas I built my own recording studio to eliminated
the middle man and having to pay somebody else to do something I can teach
myself. I met up with a few new rappers and singers from all over and as I
planned my fan base began to grow and began to take off in the direction I
have been working so hard for since I was a child. By the year 2014 I have
wrote, recorded, and produced over 160 tracks and counting.
After completing a honorable career in the military I decided to go to school and
take my career even further by getting more knowledge on how to get to my
success point. After moving to Gulfport, Mississippi I enrolled in Full Sail
University on August 4, 2014 to get the education part of music production so I
can make it in the music industry. So far I think I am successful and I have
been reaching out to classmate to collaborate for new sounds in music, film,
and graphic design. By time I graduate I look forward to having my record label
successfully grounded and well known. I don’t just look forward to writing
music, but to being able to manage my label professionally, to make a
demanding clothing line, award winning films, and help other inspired artists
who share the same goals and ambition as me to help their dreams come true
as well.
To conclude I am willing to work through all the hard times, up and down, good
and bad times to make it to the top and to live out my childhood dreams. Along
the way I will help others make their dreams reality by applying what was self
taught and use what I have and will learn in the duration of attending Full Sail
University.
