2. Background DCI’s Health for underprivileged program was established in 2008, to give health support to thousands of poor people living in the slums of Dhaka. Although Dhaka has many modern clinics, the poor cannot even access their doors. The existing health support for them is minimal. In 2010 alone, 3165 patients received treatment in our healthcare clinic. The number of patients our small clinics receive everyday is an indication of how badly needed these kinds of facilities are in the many slums of Dhaka. In response to this immense need, DCI designed its Health for Underprivileged Program to serve as a replicable model for healthcare provision in other neglected regions.

3. Inauguration of the Program Dr. Maksud Chowdhury (Pediatrician NY, Secretary BMANA & DCI Patron) and Mr. Abdul Mazid (Chairman, National Board of Revenue) officially inaugurated DCI's Health for Underprivileged Program in Dhaka on January 5, 2008.

6. We have two small clinics stationed at Dhaka. One for the Mohammadpur area slums and another one in Kallyanpur area . The population in these slums is around 20,000. The clinics are open 5 days a week. In addition to attending physician, DCI has social workers assisting the clinics, visiting the families, identifying their needs and giving them all health-related support. 7. Slums of Dhaka The slum is located next to city garbage disposal areas. People live in huts. They have bare minimum and unhygienic facilities for latrine and showers and have to use filthy water to wash their cooking utensils and clothes.

8. It is hard to believe, but in the midst of such severe poverty, children are still playing and look happy! The optimism and resiliency of children, even when faced with such dire need, is a continual source of inspiration for DCI.
