The philosopher Cheshire Calhoun (1995) suggests that integrity—defined as having and acting on relatively consistent and deep commitments—has generally been considered a solely personal virtue. The true value of integrity, she suggests, may not be just to the individual but also to the society in which that individual lives because acting with integrity is likely to yield more just and fulfilling relationships and institutions.
