Netbiscuits/The Sportsman's Guide Case Study
1. CHALLENGE:
Sportsman’s Guide, a leading online retailer of outdoor, hunting and camping gear and accessories,
launched a mobile site in early 2010. Over the course of the year, the company realized the platform
m.SportsmansGuide.com was built on, did not provide the control and flexibility Sportsman’s Guide
needed to quickly and easily post product, pricing and sale updates nor was the site optimized for all
mobile and connected devices.
SOLUTION:
At this point, Sportsman’s Guide’s CIO & SVP of Operations, Dale Monson, decided the company needed
a new mobile platform and undertook a mobile platform vendor review.
For this review, Sportsman’s Guide focused on identifying a mobile platform solution that could provide
greater-in-house control and increased ability to reach more devices while seamlessly integrating with
their existing check-out and order processing systems.
At the completion of the vendor review, Sportsman’s Guide identified Netbiscuits as the mobile
platform best suited to provide Sportsman’s Guide with a solution that enabled the company to have
complete control of the design, development and distribution of the new m.SportsmansGuide.com. On
April 15th, 2011, Sportsman’s Guide signed a contract with Netbiscuits, the world’s leading platform for
developing, publishing and monetizing rich web apps across all mobile and connected devices.
Upon execution of the contract, Sportsman’s Guide immediately began a two phase project to develop
the completely new, fully functioning mCommerce enabled m.SportsmansGuide.com site using
Netbiscuits Sitebuilder. Netbiscuits' do-it-yourself Sitebuilder tool allowed Sportsman's Guide to easily
integrate their existing checkout & order processing software bringing their 3 branded sites under one
mobile roof while providing users easy access to their full product line and the sites popular video
product reviews.
RESULTS:
The redevelopment of m.SportsmansGuide.com, using the Netbiscuits platform, was completed
on June 21st, 46 business days after it began. Original estimate was 60-90 days.
To complete the development, Sportsman’s Guide only required 1 ½ full time in-house
resources and no development resources from Netbiscuits.
Phase one of the development came in 40% under budget finished 10 days ahead of schedule.
Phase two of the development came in 50% under budget.
m.sportsmansguide.com – Every product for sale at SportsmansGuide.com is now for sale on the
mobile site.
Nearly 1000 product review videos available for viewing on mobile.
Overall, mobile sales and m.sportsmansguide.com site sales have increased significantly since
integrating the Netbiscuits platform.
The Sportsman's Guide anticipates fast growth/development from all mobile channel sales in
2011.
