 1. Make a brief summary:
    a. How are
       earthquakes
       formed/made?
    b. What make
       volcanoes erupt?
Convection

             Objective: how
              convection activity
              relates to plate
              movements and
              volcanoes.
Convection
Vocabulary
 Viscous – (viscosity) resistance of fluids to flow.
Viscosity of fluids depends on the “thin-nes” or
  “thickness” of a fluid.
    Example:
 Water is thin – its resistance to flow is low.
 Honey is thicker – its resistance to flow is
        high.
Convection
Vocabulary
 Rheids – are solid materials, like rocks, that
  deforms by viscous flow.
    Example:
 The earth’s mantle is made up of solid
materials that are in semi-liquid form due to
extreme heat, it behaves as a rheid.
Convection
Vocabulary
 Convection - refers to the movement of
molecules within fluids (i.e. liquids, gases and
  rheids).
 It is one of the major modes of heat transfer
  and mass transfer.
Convection
              Hotter molecules rise.
              Cooler molecules go down.

              Given the above
               facts, predict what is its
effect in a pot of cold
               water on a hot plate.
              Ans:
                 Heat is evenly distributed.
                 Matter is evenly distributed
Convection
              Hotter molecules rise.
              Cooler molecules go down.

 In a pot of boiling spaghetti
               sauce are chopped Italian
               sausages.
 Predict its movement in the
                  sauce.
 Will the temperature of the
                  ingredients be the same?
 Will the sausages remain at
                  the bottom?
 Hotter
  Convection
                                          molecules
                                          rise up.
                                         Cooler
                                          molecules
                                          go down.
                                        Land heats up
                                         easily and
                                         cools down
                                         easily.

  • 2. Convection Objective: how convection activity relates to plate movements and volcanoes.
  • 3. Convection Vocabulary  Viscous – (viscosity) resistance of fluids to flow. Viscosity of fluids depends on the “thin-nes” or “thickness” of a fluid.  Example:  Water is thin – its resistance to flow is low.  Honey is thicker – its resistance to flow is high.
  • 4. Convection Vocabulary  Rheids – are solid materials, like rocks, that deforms by viscous flow.  Example:  The earth’s mantle is made up of solid materials that are in semi-liquid form due to extreme heat, it behaves as a rheid.
  • 5. Convection Vocabulary  Convection - refers to the movement of molecules within fluids (i.e. liquids, gases and rheids).  It is one of the major modes of heat transfer and mass transfer.
  • 6. Convection  Hotter molecules rise.  Cooler molecules go down.  Given the above facts, predict what is its effect in a pot of cold water on a hot plate.  Ans:  Heat is evenly distributed.  Matter is evenly distributed
  • 7. Convection  Hotter molecules rise.  Cooler molecules go down.  In a pot of boiling spaghetti sauce are chopped Italian sausages.  Predict its movement in the sauce.  Will the temperature of the ingredients be the same?  Will the sausages remain at the bottom?
  • 8.  Hotter Convection molecules rise up.  Cooler molecules go down.  Land heats up easily and cools down easily.  The sea heats  Explain the convection activity in up slowly and the picture cools down slowly.
