Do you sometimes think that your club is in the Stone Age, when they should really be in the Digital Age. I've started a High Performance Leadership (HPL) project to increase the digital footprint of my #Toastmaster club and thought that I'd share some of my insights with you.

You might have noticed that people tend to look for everything online now a days, which means that you want your club to be found easily in the top search engines.
I don’t know the formula used by the different search engines, but I have noticed that they’re using more and more input from Social Media sites.
If you enter someone’s name into a search engine there is a good chance that you’ll see a website along with entries for Facebook, LinkedIn, and so on.
In addition to looking for everything on their computers, more and more people are searching on their smartphones and tablets, which adds another dynamic to things.
Pictured above is the HPL Manual (Item 262 at the Toastmasters website)
It isn’t necessary to do an HPL to set up or improve your club’s Social Media presence, but doing this as an HPL could be good for you and for your club.
Is there a particular profile to your existing members? Is there a kind of profile of people that you’re trying to attract?
Where can you find people meeting this profile in the real world and online? Think about some possible membership campaigns to reach people in the real world but this is outside the scope of this presentation.
What talents to your members have? Think about what jobs they have, and what their interests are.
Your club will be different than mine but we do have some members that will never do anything online, so don’t expect this.
See how you can enlist people to help you with creating content.
What Social Media sites do people meeting your club’s profile hang out at? You’ll want to create a presence in as many of these sites as makes sense for your club.
You’ll want to come up with a high level idea of where you’d like to have profiles at and you’ll want to discuss and agree with your project team and any other
stake holders you might think you should have buy in from.
If Facebook were a country it would be the 3rd largest in the world, which is the biggerst reason why you might want to use it!
Even as early as November 1st, 2010 Facebook would have been the 3rd largest country…

Chances are that you’re probably interested in reaching a group of people that are active on Facebook, so you probably want to be here.
A normal public account has a limited number of “friends” that you can have. Many companies and celebrities have “fanpages” which doesn’t put a limit on the number of people that can follow you.
A “group” allows can have various forms of permissions for possible members. You can have a Fanpage and a Group but this also means more work in administering them. Before deciding which one(s)
you’d like, I suggest having a look around Facebook to see which would better suit your needs
Facebook is always making changes that push the boundaries on privacy, so I can understand and respect if you don‘t wish to use it.
Lots of people are fatigued with all of the status updates you get and requests for this and that.
Think about what you‘d like to post, what you post should be valuable to members and potential members and not too often.
They’re getting close to 400 ‘likes’, which is a lot more than I’ve seen for most clubs.
You can find their Facebook page at:
https://www.facebook.com/HighwayToastmasters
They’ve created a lot of cute pictures with good quotes and they tie it into an upcoming meeting.
They’re getting ‘likes’, ‘comments’, and ‘shares’, something we’d all like to see in Facebook and everywhere else that we have profiles.
While the masses may be on Facebook, a lot of the people on Facebook won’t meet the profile of potential members of your club. LinkedIn is the 2nd largest Social Network and is the largest “Professional Social Netowork”
Although there are some overlapping reasons why people use Facebook and LinkedIn, people tend to look professional networks as a way of developing their careers and more old-fashioned networking and meeting professional people.
You can set up a Company Profile (or Organization) and/or a group, again take a look around and think about the work involved in keeping both of them up.
In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland there are a lot of people using Zing, is there another “Professional” social network that you should think about being in beside LinkedIn
where your potential members might be at?
SlideShare was bought by LinkedIn, so they saw the potential of this site.
With online material you’d ideally like to have a combination of viral activity (a lot of hits and views in a short period of time) with longevity.
I once did a workshop with twenty some people and the presentation on SlideShare has been viewed by over 2000 people!
People searching for various key words can find the presentations.
Think about the impact that people in your club can make using this site.
I have created presentations related to several speeches that I’ve given and they have been viewed by several times the number of people that were present when I gave the speeches.
Now imagine if you and your club put presentations on SliceShare after speeches were given.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, maybe in today‘s world a picture is worth a million clicks!
Pinterest is an up and coming social site that is getting a lot of press. In August 2012 the site had just under 25 million unique monthly visitors, passing Tumblr for the first time (reported at http://blog.compete.com/2012/10/10/pinterest-surpasses-tumblr-in-unique-visitors/).
Within online pinboards people will “pin”, “repin” , and “comment” on infographics, pictures, videos, and you can even pin presentations from SlideShare.

This is one group pinboard that you might want to join.
This group pinboard can be found at: http://pinterest.com/darrylheron/our-toastmasters/
The idea of this board is to share material interesting to Toastmaster members. There are nearly 30 members, over 100 things have been pinned and over 1300 people are following this board.
We’ve created a Flickr group for my club and we try to take pictures at our various events. These pictures can then be embedded or linked to in all kinds of Social Media site, blogs, and websites.
Flickr also has the “social” aspect to it.
“flickr icon” from:
http://www.wmo.int/images/icons/flickr-icon.jpg
You should also consider that not everyone wants to have videos of their speeches online, so be sure to get permission before posting to YouTube.
Creating videos with good sound quality and lighting can be a lot of work and editing can be very time consuming, so this is not necessarily a homerun.
YouTube has made it very easy to embed videos, share videos, and a variety of other things that mean you can use videos and might not even really need or want your own channel.
Wikipedia refers to Twitter as “Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables users to send and read short 140-character text messages, called "tweets".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter
Within many of the Social Media sites there will be some form of like, comment, and share, they might have different names but they‘ll sever similar funtions. All of these help to get traffic to your Social Media profiles and hopefully to your website.
„Like Comment Share“ picture comes from:

People love contest and surveys (within reason of course). Your members will probably have some famous (and not so famous) speeches that they’d recommend to potential members.
Find ways to tap into their experiences and interests. Be creative.
In Germany, most Germans don’t know the term “Toastmasters”, they’re more likely to search for “Rhetoric” (actually Rhetorik in German).
There can be a lot of key words that you could use, especially when leveraging the effort of multiple clubs
