Fog computing is emerging as an alternative to cloud computing that brings computing closer to data sources like IoT devices. While fog computing provides benefits like lower latency and scalability compared to cloud, greening the fog to reduce its energy consumption will be more difficult than greening the cloud due to fundamental differences between fog and cloud architectures. Greening the fog is a techno-economic issue rather than just a technical one, and will require considering factors like the distributed nature of fog's energy usage and different incentives across its value chain.
