The European Union approved creating the euro currency in 1992 to facilitate commercial exchanges and avoid currency conversion between member states. Over time, 19 of the European Union's members adopted the euro as their currency, with the first countries doing so in 1999 and the most recent being Estonia in 2011. While euro coins have a common design across countries, euro banknotes feature different national sides to represent each member state's history and culture.
