Some of you may still see her as the young girl with big mysterious eyes and long brown hair who would
go off the rails, not only in her movies but also in real life, doing unimaginable things. Being the

“I never thought I would have children, I never thought I would meet the right person and I never
thought I would be in love.” Ang says. “Having come from a broken home – you kind of accept that
certain things feel like a fairy tale, and you just don’t look for them.”
On the life-changing moment that put her on her humanitarian path
“The life-changing moment for me was the first time I went to a war zone for two weeks eleven years
ago. I spent some time in Sierra, a brutal conflict where they cut off arms of little kids. I could not for the
life of me understand how this was happening. It was like someone had smacked me in the face for all
the times I worry about my own problems. I went to Tanzania and saw the first mass refugee camp that
held 500,000 people. When I saw that sea of humanity, displaced, with the lack of human rights and not
knowing what their future is, it was so daunting that I was in complete shock and when I got to the
airport, I talked to my mother on the phone and broke down. It was then that I decided to live a better
life and never, ever forget what I had just seen.”
On how her childhood was different to the one she is creating for her children
“We weren’t as at home in the world. With my family, I am trying to raise them to have respect for all
people and to make friends around the world and feel at home around the world. It’s what is forming
them. Of course, I make sure they do their math and their science, but the world perspective is the most
important thing.”
OS: It sounded like it hardened you for a while. You said earlier that when you were young, you were
darker, more introverted, what do you think changed you as you got older?
“Um… Well, when I started to travel and got to see what other people’s struggles were – I got out of
myself. That and having children. The moment you have a child, in an instant, your life is not for you and
your life is completely, 100 percent dedicated to another human being and they will always come first. It
changes you forever. It gives you a nice purpose and focus. I’m loving and soft again because they have
brought that back in my life.
